Many conservatives seem to lack empathy for others who are not like them. They may profess to be religious, but in practice they only help the fellows who are part of their own social group. Everyone else is a non-entity.

The situation changes when one of these conservatives is personally affected by injustice. Often, they swing 180 degrees away from their previous apathetic attitudes and become (dare I say it) social justice warriors.

Most notable is Dick Cheney. As congresscritter for Wyoming for a long long time, he quietly voted against every piece of anti-gay legislation that was brought up. Why? His daughter Mary, who’s gay.
