I’m sure you are very familiar with the term “going through the motions.”

American’s are real good for that kind of thing. Go through the motions with everyone else and you are good to go as you fit in.

I recall a comment on this site about how people who really do not understand what concepts like patriotism, Christianity or manhood truly mean simply cling to arbitrary symbols like flag lapel pins, crosses or large-magazine weapons, and are very upset when the latter are not treated with “due respect”.
