How about requiring the insurance companies that sell to religious institutions offer a low-cost contraceptive ‘bolt-on’ that employees can pay for out-of pocket. That means the church is no longer paying for it, which would remove the practical objection.

Fine by me. Obama needs to compromise on this, for political not moral reasons, and then get this kind of culture war issue off the table. Let the GOP drown itself in a rhetorical flood of hate over contraception, abortion, gay rights, etc.

Sometimes the smart thing to do is very little. Give your opponent some rope and watch them hang themselves.
