Suppose you have 10 innocent people divided into 2 groups, 6 persons and 4 persons. Suppose you know that both groups could die but you could save one by killing the other. The “cold hard logic” would indicate that by killing the 4 people and thus saving the 6 you have prevented a “greater evil”. Would that now mean you should go scot-free and face no charges whatsoever?

Ridiculous, but so is the “ticking bomb”.

Take two boats, one full of the worst scum imaginable, the other full of innocent people. Pack each with explosives and give a detonator to those explosives to the opposite boat. Tell them that if one doesn’t blow up the other before a certain time, you’ll set them both off. Which boat should be sacrificed so that the other survives?
