Most of those terrible crimes were a distant memory by the time we arrived. And even then, they were isolated incidents, not total civil war. South Africa still has its problems, but I was deeply impressed by the determination of nearly everyone to make the new government and social order work. I credit Mandela with inspiring his nation to be optimistic and compassionate.

I had a great time living there. Not sure if it’s the ideal place to retire, though.

Were you here the other night when someone posted a twitter thing of some alt-right dickbag trying to tell a white South African that they lived in a white genocide hell hole. They weren’t having any of that. I’d love to visit SA too. Only thing that may worry me though is the waters are said to be quite shark infested but I’d love to add the Indian ocean to the list of oceans I’ve swam in and it’d be the last because no way are you going to find me in the Arctic or Southern Oceans.
