I teach high school, so my students often don’t have quite as motivation when I want to talk about the agrarian/urban divide in the late 19th century or some such.

Last winter quarter, my students were engaged with the Parkland shotting and most of my class participation in the walk out that was planned on campus during one of my classes. They wanted me to go with them, but I told them I only would if everyone walked out. A few students stayed to work on the assignment I gave them so student’s wouldn’t miss anything if they walked out of class. So, I didn’t walk out with them. I should have, but I am concerned about my postition of “authority” (such as it is) over them and appearances of fairness, even if many of our elected officials could give two shits.
