Fine by me. Obama needs to compromise on this, for political not moral reasons, and then get this kind of culture war issue off the table. Let the GOP drown itself in a rhetorical flood of hate over contraception, abortion, gay rights, etc.

Sometimes the smart thing to do is very little. Give your opponent some rope and watch them hang themselves.

I think they feel they’re riding a potent wedge issue back to political relevance and I’m not sure they’re open to backing down no matter what is offered.
