The Catholic bishops seem to have pre-rejected the most obvious compromise:

I think they feel they’re riding a potent wedge issue back to political relevance and I’m not sure they’re open to backing down no matter what is offered.

Which puts Obama in a terrible bind, probably something the Bishops are quite pleased to see.
