My take is that he, and a number of other conservatives abandoned the Republican Party when it became both a personality cult and an authoritarian party. What caught my eye was his tweet back in 2017 that a large group of his colleagues, if given a choice between abandoning their values positions of political power or rejecting democracy, would reject democracy.
