This sort of shit is Trumpworld: these feudal societies out of view of the major cities, where generations of princelings run the industries, police, and local governments by right of divine rule, and will fight to the death (at least other people’s deaths) to retain it. The face of Trumpworld is the asshole who raped his way through high school and inherited the local Ford dealership from his daddy. They’ve always been there, but now we’re seeing more of what they do.

This is why the far right is so vehement about the county sheriff being the highest law enforcement they think has any authority; they’re quite convinced that State or Federal agents are just “outside agitators” with no right to interfere in the local doings.

You left out the Ahmed Aubery case; they only got caught because one of their friends put the whole thing on his iPhone, apparently not realizing anybody might object in any way once they saw it. (also, you’re downplaying the Murdaughs if you think they’re movie-of-the-week material — it would take a whole season of American Crime Story to adequately cover the 5 bodies so far and $10M missing in two separate embezzlement schemes.)
