I didn’t understand the nature of your question the first time, sorry.

I do believe that it would be hard or impossible for an avowed atheist to be elected to office, either as a Republican or Democrat. Though, IMO, more so for a Republican currently. I believe that Rep. Stark only came out because his solidified position meant it wouldn’t hurt him too much. But in the past there were plenty of examples of politicians losing support because they are atheists or suspected atheists. Howard Dean lost some support when he didn’t express a religious belief correctly and people suspected him of atheism - and that was just the suspicion, despite his objections.
