It took me some time to explain to my grandmother and mom that South America is a very diverse region. They weren’t being bigoted. They were just unaware of how many different groups have called South America home over the centuries.

Speaking as a social scientist…South America as shows how arbitrary race constructs are.

Lots of folks there see themselves as “white” and look down on people who are more brown/black, but would be counted non-white in European or American racist schemes.

Same thing in East Africa and the Middle East. Northern Sudanese think of themselves as non-black, and Southern Sudanese as inferior “blacks.” Arab view themselves as white, and racism against non-whites definitely happens in the ME.

The shit doesn’t make sense on any analytical level, which is where the bad faith comes in.
