I don’t think GWB was pretending honestly. Don’t get me wrong. I think he was a bad president who deserves his scorn there but I don’t doubt for a second that he was appaled by racial bigotry.

W Bush was a normal republican, appalled by racism when it gets to Nazi or Archie Bunker levels, but otherwise willing to let racism benefit the Republican party.

That fact pattern does not suggest great sincerity for the being appalled part.

Plus you can’t really claim to be civilized when you normalize torture.
