It’s worth noting that Lee and Jackson made a very bad choice in the cause they served, but they did do their best to wage a ‘clean’ war, and in the East such efforts were generally successful.

In the West of course, things were different, especially when it came to the Confederate cavalry under the capable but horrific Nathan Bedford Forrest, quite likely the most brutal general America has produced.

I would actually disagree with you there. I don’t put Lee and Jackson in the same place I do Forrest but it is true that captured African-American soldiers were sent into slavery by the Confederates. I understand what you’re saying. I don’t think Stonewall or Lee would have condemned executing innocent women either but I think their reputations are romanticized a bit.
