re: #390 Belafon

Change is slow, except for the collapse of the Whigs and the realignment after the Civil Rights act, where political change was pretty quick.

Our system is designed to make change slow. Staggered elections and diffuse powers not only among the three federal branches but between the federal and state governments, should temper passions and compel consensus building. At least that was the idea, especially when you had the state legislatures between voters and the selection of Senators and electors between voters and the presidential election.

Of course, we’ve also seen over the last four years how much our institutions rely on honest and decent people being generally honorable in order to function properly.
