As far as I can tell, it’s all about the swing states of OH, PA, and FL. All three have a sizable portion of their electorate who are very religious (to hyper religious). Democrats have faired well in those states, but that is largely due to FDR and the long term effects of unions being strongly Democratic Party biased. Since that segment of the Democratic machine has weakened, Democrats have been walking carefully in those key states, not wanting to write off the religious Democrats (of which Catholics would be a non-trivial share.)
