re: #435 Talking Point Detective

In Korea, there was a scandal a while back when it was exposed that schools were essentially accepting bribes to admit students of “legacy” families whose qualifications were low.

My argument is the legacy programs shouldn’t be a consideration when discussing AA. I think they’re 2 separate issues.

Isn’t what you’re talking about the same thing? How do you see addressing a lack of class mobility when you have mechanisms that assure inequity in access to higher education?

I suggested tying acceptance rates to zip codes. I think that’s more fair. As a matter-of-fact, I could argue the legacy issue has more to do with “class mobility” (OWS!) than race. I don’t think it’s appropriate for the feds to tell universities they cannot take legacy into account but it would be appropriate for them to force them to enroll a certain percentage of the “poor”.
