Lawhawk has addressed your point correctly in #413. For President Obama to discredit himself with this grandiose posturing on the international stage hurts the entire country.

I don’t know. I think Obama’s target audience (besides US voters obviously) was the average muslim on the street, the idea being NOT that he would be able to change a terrorist’s or future terrorist’s views, but instead that he could help foster an atmosphere where there is less aid and comfort for same. A “hearts and minds” type argument. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t exactly have high hopes that this will work, I wouldn’t bet you my life savings on this working, but I’m guessing that is his rational. Lawhawk’s statement aside, I personally think Obama’s speech is a wash. Won’t effect anything either way and will soon be forgotten by all.
