re: #162 Cognito

Just pure speculation on my part. But I believe that “factual illiteracy” (good phrase) will ultimately be defeated, or beaten down, by the internet. With so many alternate viewpoints available on any one topic, most people will ultimately come to realize they have no-one to rely on but themselves, to determine right and wrong on a topic, as best they can. How else can they come to terms with terabytes of contradictory interpretations?

People now have this incredible resource that enables them to get more sides to a story than they ever imagined existed. It will encourage critical thinking.

I know I will read a great debate on LGF. (esp that legalizing pot thread a few days ago). Lots of good comments. many great comments. Made me think. Point is, LGF will stand the test of time. (Why else do so many come here to attack it?). Can’t say the same for Pamela’s blog (Ayn Rand is rolling in her grave at the name), which I used to read regularly up till approx 2 years ago. It was obviously becoming sensationalist, and I prefer a good debate on LGF. (And I remember the days when she used to comment here)

And I question whether factual illiteracy is on the rise. Could it possibly be on the decline?
