re: #510 FrogMarch

I’m not sure you can make the leap to say that it’s actually increased sales. It may simply be replacing some number of existing sales that would have occurred without the rebates.

After all, every year nearly 20 million cars are sold annually. 200,000 cars sold in this program would be 1% of sales (if I did my math right). We’d have to see whether the program actually resulted in increased production. I’m not sure it did, but it might have reduced lot inventories.

Also, Chrysler has been offering up a matching program to entice people to come in and buy Chrysler products. That has to eat at their bottom line.

Then, there’s the car dealers who will be awaiting the reimbursement from the feds.

Right now, my biggest problem is that no one seems to know just how much money is left in the program and how many people have taken advantage of the program. You’d think that would be easy enough to do - and yet you can’t get a straight answer from anyone. The accounting is a mess, and it’s not going to get any better.
