I actually knew, years ago, a woman whose abusive husband had shot their dog (German shepherd) first, then later tried to kill their son by shaking him.

He used to call her from prison to tell her she was a bad Christian and had broken her vows by divorcing him. Listening to her tell him off was quite satisfying, if only because it was all she could do.

That didn’t come out right. I meant that she might have been helpless against the consequences of the damage that he had inflicted, but at least she wasn’t allowing any more damage emotionally.
