Just so. Remember that however much Republicans hate Barack Obama, David Petraeus has been very popular with all but the Paulians within the GOP. For one of the GOP to have taken him down over an affair would have gained the party nothing and possibly cost it critical enthusiasm the GOP was counting on at the polls. (We know know that enthusiasm wasn’t fully there, but that’s not what the party leadership was being told a month ago).

The Paulians? I’ll be honest here and I think Petraeus was admired from many different circles. Sure, it was primarily conservatives but there were some liberals. I admit to being somewhat in the latter croup. My view on Petraeus has changed dramatically over this.
