There was a ban on shorting financial stocks in the fall, IIRC. The average financial lost over 30% during that time. The free market always wins out.I think shorting (so long as it’s not naked) serves a useful purpose. One of the reasons why we’re in this mess is because of speculation on the upside.
That “ban” was unworkable cause they left a wide hole in the options market. You could do all the short selling you wanted if you just did it using options. It was a joke, done by other people who did not understand how the markets work. And the naked short selling ban has not been enforced either. It’s wide open now.
