Little Green Panda Watch

A big LGF thank you goes to Timothy Sandefur at Panda’s Thumb, for his nice recommendation a little while back: LGF on Creationism - The Panda’s Thumb.

It’s great when conservatives and others who tend to support the Republican party are willing to take a stand against the creationist elements on the right. Charles Johnson may not be, strictly speaking, a conservative, but his blog Little Green Footballs is widely read by conservatives, and he’s been doing a great job defending evolution against the religious right. Regardless of your views of his politics, he deserves applause for speaking up on behalf of real science in the face of an often hostile crowd. To see what I mean, just click over and scroll down.

And check out Timothy’s blog: Freespace.

re: #3 Charles

Timothy Sandefur is a Senior Staff Attorney at the Pacific Legal Foundation. As the lead attorney in the Economic Liberty Project, he works to protect businesses against abusive government regulation. He also works to prevent the abuse of eminent domain, having litigated important eminent domain cases in California, Missouri, and elsewhere, and having filed briefs in many significant eminent domain cases, including Kelo v. New London. A prolific writer, his book Cornerstone of Liberty: Property Rights in 21st Century America was published by the Cato Institute in 2006, and he has published many scholarly articles on subjects ranging from eminent domain and economic liberty to copyright, evolution and creationism, and the legal issues of slavery and the Civil War.

One of the good guys.

I have to admit I had actually liked the words "Intelligent Design" because they seemed to describe what I believe in--that the creation of the world was accomplished by God guiding natural forces over a period of time.

I credit LGF for exposing, to me, that ID is actually young-Earth creationism.

8 LionofDixon  Sat, Mar 7, 2009 1:55:30pm

Some of us on the "religious right" happen to believe that evolution is God's procedure for creationism. That is to say, creationism and evolution can co-exist.....

That was the purpose of the phrase- to play to people's religious sympathies, as well as our sense of fairness. It's more than a pseudo-scientific, YEC agenda- it's emotional and spiritual manipulation.

55 researchok  Sat, Mar 7, 2009 2:14:46pm

Kudos are well deserved.

As has been often noted here and elsewhere, belief in God does not negate acceptance of evolution.

In some ways, the biggest offense of all is the hijacking of faith by those who insist that belief in God is conditional on their interpretation, as if they and they alone speak for God- an idea that resembles Islamist thinking as opposed to our own Judeo-Christian beliefs that allows for free will.

How about we let God deal with those who believe in creationism and just teach science, as imperfect and ever changing as it is, in schools today? Science allows for change as our understanding and knowledge increases. That is very different than Creationism.

I submit that if my greatest sin were acceptance of evolution, I'm in pretty good shape.

I said "conservative", not "Republican". I'd agree with you that the Republican Party "brain trust" is creationist-ridden to the point of being toxic to half the population. But I don't take stuff like that personally. I can always flounce out of an organisation and join a new one. Or fire the idiots.

Lumpen conservatives also have a problem with creationism, but it's different in scope and scale. I do take insults to that personally. I can't flounce out of a philosophical principle. Those are too deeply held for flouncing. "Bad Astronomy" recently lied that among Bush's Sins Against Science was his refusal to fund stem cell research. In fact he'd refused to fund EMBRYONIC stem cell research. And that was for philosophical reasons to do with ethics, not out of a desire to return us to the glory days of Galen's four-humour theory of disease.

In an interview with the newspaper published on its website, Obama said that some of the US success in Iraq involved reaching out to Islamic fundamentalists who had been alienated by the tactics of al Qaeda in Iraq. (Reuters)

Oklahoma legislator proposes resolution to condemn Richard Dawkins

[Link: richarddawkins.net...]

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 1ST SESSION OF THE 52ND OKLAHOMA LEGISLATURE:

THAT the Oklahoma House of Representative strongly opposes the invitation to speak on the campus of the University of Oklahoma to Richard Dawkins of Oxford University, whose published statements on the theory of evolution and opinion about those who do not believe in the theory are contrary and offensive to the views and opinions of most citizens of Oklahoma.

THAT the Oklahoma House of Representatives encourages the University of Oklahoma to engage in an open, dignified, and fair discussion of the Darwinian theory of evolution and all other scientific theories which is the approach that a public institution should be engaged in and which represents the desire and interest of the citizens of Oklahoma.

As PZ Myers puts it on pharyngula:

When we closed on our home, we insisted on paying our own taxes and insurance rather than having it withheld in escrow. They balked. We held our ground, and told them it was a deal-breaker for us. After some 'it can't be done' and hand-wringing, we got our way. That was 23 years ago. Needless to say, we've never so much as been late with a payment.

In the past month, since Barack Obama was sworn in as U.S. president, Israel has received four official complaints from members of the new administration regarding various issues linked to West Bank settlements.

Here's a common theme to the Obamites and ID'rs, and it's a generational thing, a sign of our times - they don't really care if they are right.

Some years ago now I read a characterization of the modern workforce, I think it was more for Gen-X'rs (post-boomers) than for later comers, that they believed in "roles not goals". They see any task as something they *do*, without much concern with the end-results (this being in contrast to the greatest generation, that did things, and the boomer generation that believe in MBO - management by objectives). Of course, so many kids were taught in school, and so they believe as adults. So, an ID'r can advocate some silly anti-scientific position, because it feels good. They cannot see that it matters what is objectively correct. They don't grok objectively. But I rant this way more along the lines of Obama's continuing skein of pathologically stupid actions. He wants to reach out to X, Y, and Z. Why, because it will work, or because he wants to be a reacher? The later, I am afraid. He simply has no concept of results. What do y'all think of that?

Barack Obama 'too tired' to give proper welcome to Gordon Brown

Mr Brown handed over carefully selected gifts, including a pen holder made from the wood of a warship that helped stamp out the slave trade - a sister ship of the vessel from which timbers were taken to build Mr Obama's Oval Office desk. Mr Obama's gift in return, a collection of Hollywood film DVDs that could have been bought from any high street store, looked like the kind of thing the White House might hand out to the visiting head of a minor African state.

Mr Obama rang Mr Brown as he flew home, in what many suspected was an attempt to make amends.

The real views of many in Obama administration were laid bare by a State Department official involved in planning the Brown visit, who reacted with fury when questioned by The Sunday Telegraph about why the event was so low-key.

You could've stopped two words earlier, and still be right.

So are we supposed to be concerned that our President is "unable to focus" on foreign affairs. This is serious, no?

Should we give him 300 more foreign affairs advisors? He has 3 people running around acting as Secretary of State, do we need more?

Does this also mean we can rescind his foreign affairs decisions of the past few weeks since he was not properly focused? Could we say that by making unfocused decisions he is not carrying out his charge to protect the United States?

/Sarcasm, but it illustrates that this bonehead needs to choose his words a lot more carefully. Who knows, more Nirth-type wailing could come of saying something as stupid as this -and we don't need that.

Po' po' wittle bawack:

Barack Obama's offhand approach to Gordon Brown's Washington visit last week came about because the president was facing exhaustion over America's economic crisis and is unable to focus on foreign affairs, the Sunday Telegraph has been told.

Too tired?

Sources close to the White House say Mr Obama and his staff have been "overwhelmed" by the economic meltdown and have voiced concerns that the new president is not getting enough rest.

British officials, meanwhile, admit that the White House and US State Department staff were utterly bemused by complaints that the Prime Minister should have been granted full-blown press conference and a formal dinner, as has been customary. They concede that Obama aides seemed unfamiliar with the expectations that surround a major visit by a British prime minister.

But Washington figures with access to Mr Obama's inner circle explained the slight by saying that those high up in the administration have had little time to deal with international matters, let alone the diplomatic niceties of the special relationship.

Sarah Brown’s very British fashion gift for Michelle Obama

As if slumber parties in the White House and secret visits from the Jonas Brothers weren't enough to bring little Malia and Sasha Obama kudos (forget their parents for a second), now Sarah Brown's given them the ultimate Briish fashion gift – Topshop clothes! The Prime Minister's wife arrived for her First Ladies' summit with Michelle Obama yesterday bearing a dress and necklace from Topshop, which has yet to launch in the US.

How thoughtful of Mrs. Brown. And how did Michelle reciprocate? She sent an aide to the White House gift shop with $30. How cool is that?

First Lady Michelle Obama shows even she has a gift for the gaffe

In return Mrs Obama gave the Brown children, Fraser and John, two toy models of Marine One, the Presidential helicopter. Fair enough on the helicopter part, always a popular choice with small boys; but Marine One? It’s not as though anyone needs reminding that Barack Obama is President or that he has his own helicopter. Short of giving the boys Action Man models of her own husband smiting the evil forces of neoconservatism, Mrs Obama’s gesture could not have been more solipsistic or more inherently dismissive of Mrs Brown.

Not only did she demonstrate that she spent approximately three seconds contemplating the needs of the Brown boys (having an aide pop to the White House gift shop for a piece of merchandising does not imply a great deal of thought), she appeared to show a most uncharacteristic lapse of judgment.

/Classy

There is a "protocol office" I believe. My feeling is that Obama either ignored it or didn't consult with them, or perhaps, as you said, there is a serious organizational problem there.

Today, I saw this story:Great news: Obama fumbled Brown visit because he’s in over his head

Exactly. The guy didn't even have time to organize his Senate Office (or his committee) before he abandoned it to run for President. He's never managed anyone or anything. This is that Executive experience that was so unimportant during the campaign.

It insults me to hear anyone associated with the President to say he is "surprised" at the volume of work. He knew how much work it was. He is just too "Dr. Philled" to admit to himself that he is just not talented enough to do it.

An intentional insult would at least mean that Obama and his team know what they are doing. If it's a mistake then they have no control over their action much less the unintended consequences.

I agree --> An intentional insult would at least mean that Obama and his team know what they are doing.

But ...this is not a debutante ball situation. I think of ALL of the players on board here -- starting with Hillary herself -- and including all of the former Clinton players he has surrounded himself with ....they all knew what a snub this would be and did it anyway. If your point were valid, we would have seen the same type of thing coming from the Clinton admin, but we did not.

I refuse to sit by and give these idiots who are supposed to be at the helm of this ship a pass for "mistakes" and their unintended consequences.

One more thing ....do you also believe the returning of the Churchill bust was a "mistake", or do you consider that to be an intentional snub?

In return Mrs Obama gave the Brown children, Fraser and John, two toy models of Marine One, the Presidential helicopter. Fair enough on the helicopter part, always a popular choice with small boys; but Marine One? It’s not as though anyone needs reminding that Barack Obama is President or that he has his own helicopter. Short of giving the boys Action Man models of her own husband smiting the evil forces of neoconservatism, Mrs Obama’s gesture could not have been more solipsistic or more inherently dismissive of Mrs Brown.

Good evening.

I think this next week will likely bring the "capitulation" panic selling in the market that the technicians have been looking for.
Stocks face uphill battle as budget, retail sales loom

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stock investors have little to look forward to in the week ahead, when Washington budget maneuverings and the unfolding saga of some of America's largest companies are likely to vie with retail-sales data and a handful of corporate earnings.
"The markets will largely move around interpretations of things that moved us before: the impression of things coming out of Washington and the budget debate," said Art Hogan, chief market economist at Jefferies & Co.
Lawmakers are working on a spending bill for the government's operations for the next six months. Investors will be looking for clues of how the budget will affect various industries, like health care, Hogan said.

I figure we will lose another 15% or so off the market. That will put the market down about 35% since Obama was sworn in.

Rumors are starting to move that Obama is thinking about getting rid of Geithner, cause the incompetance it's getting embarassing.

Obama Ponders Outreach to Elements of the Taliban

WASHINGTON — President Obama declared in an interview that the United States was not winning the war in Afghanistan and opened the door to a reconciliation process in which the American military would reach out to moderate elements of the Taliban, much as it did with Sunni militias in Iraq.

The theme song could be "Getting to know you, getting to know all about you."

Buried in the same article from the NY Slimes is this golden nugget:

In a 35-minute conversation with The New York Times aboard Air Force One on Friday, Mr. Obama reviewed the challenges to his young administration. The president said he could not assure Americans the economy would begin growing again this year. But he pledged that he would “get all the pillars in place for recovery this year” and urged Americans not to “stuff money in their mattresses.”

I don’t think that people should be fearful about our future,” he said. “I don’t think that people should suddenly mistrust all of our financial institutions.”

This from the same guy who has been hollering "catastrophe" since he got in office.

And they wonder why the market has no confidence in this administration.

Of course Reich is projecting. Of course when he delivers a litany of imagined right-wing boogy-boos, it's because he's already made a litany of his own (militia, gun nuts, KKK, rich people, Jesus lovers, etc etc) that he keeps more private.

Time To Fire Tim Geithner

Before taking office at the end of January, Tim Geithner had many months to develop a solid plan for what to do. He had the opportunity to see what was working and what wasn't and to consult with dozens of experts, many of whom had no stake in the matter (unlike the Wall Street kingpins who seem to have shaped Geithner's inaccurate view of the situation). He had the opportunity to see and understand that what America needs most right now is clarity and decisiveness.

Then he took office. In the five weeks since, Tim Geithner has:

(see link)

With a few years of seasoning in a normal environment, Tim Geithner might turn out to be a fine Treasury Secretary. But this isn't a normal environment, and we don't have a few years.

The engines of the US economy just quit. We're losing altitude rapidly. And the co-pilot flying the plane clearly doesn't know what to do.

So it's time for the captain to take over again, before Geithner takes him and the rest of us down with him.

Yes, she caused a massive bank panic for no good reason. Another reason why the market dropped last week, you have twits in charge of these things now. This is quickly becoming the gang that can't shoot straight.

By the way., if you'v enot read my suggestions for fixing this mess, here they are:

1. Drop mark to market and go back to discounted cash flows, which is what we really used for about 80 years before mark to market. That will cut the capital loss to banks in half and will give them a market to price these assets with.

2. Drop the capital gains tax to zero for at least the next 5 years. Capital will flood back into the market and the banks.

3. Install the uptick rule and make it 4 tenths that prices have to go up before you can get out of a shor tsale. That will stop this pounding of stocks.

4. Enforce the naked short selling laws.

5. Buy up the remaining bad mortgages to unwind the remaining toxic assets and work them out in a Resolution Trust 2 scenario,.

6. Stop spending money like drunken sailors on shore leave.

This would cost a fraction of what they are spending now, and it would work, too.

5. Buy up the remaining bad loans to unwind

Then: Patton speaking to American soldiers, "our job is to make the other bastard die for his country," or some other excerpt.

Of course Reich is projecting. Of course when he delivers a litany of imagined right-wing boogy-boos, it's because he's already made a litany of his own (militia, gun nuts, KKK, rich people, Jesus lovers, etc etc) that he keeps more private.

But he's still right.

All Reich has to do to find right-wing populism is to visit some of the sites blacklisted here. Do you imagine that as more conservatives find themselves out of luck that they're not going to focus their ire at Jews - er, "Soros", the MSM, blacks, liberal yuppies and the rest of Reich's projected menagerie?

No, I do not think that is happening or is going to happen. There has always been a far-right fringe of anti-Semites and people who think the Council on Foreign Relations and the Bilderbergers are behind everything. They are neither numerous nor influential. The idea that middle-class Americans are suddenly going to start acting like gangbangers is just ludicrous.

A similar theory has bruited about last year. It was predicted then that O would be a Clintonian moderate in his first term. But when he was in his second, he'd be a lame duck, and THEN would hire the radicals.

That theory (before the budget showed us what O was) was more plausible than yours. I don't think O'd get away with it. Joe Sixpack doesn't know from economics but viscerally feels that when things change that quickly, the reason is the man and not the system. Also, the press won't have any credibility then either.

There was a ban on shorting financial stocks in the fall, IIRC. The average financial lost over 30% during that time. The free market always wins out.

I think shorting (so long as it's not naked) serves a useful purpose. One of the reasons why we're in this mess is because of speculation on the upside.

Thank you for the kind words and you are not a dolt. I tend to use jargon when I'm blogging quickly, my apology for that.

First you have to understand short selling. Short selling is when you think the market price will go down, you borrow some shares from your broker, sell them at the current price, wait for the price to go down, and then buy back the shares at a lower price to close the trade and pocket the difference. Well,in that situation there is an overwhelming urge to make up bad news and spread bad rumors trying to talk down the price of certain stocks.

The "uptick" rule was in place for about 60 years to stop that. It required price to actually go up 1/10th before you could buy back the stock and close the deal out. This kept people from doing this destructive rumor mongering hammering prices down. The uptick rule was allowed to expire a few years ago and has not been renewed. Every since then, the volatility in the market has skrocketed.

I would reinstall the uptick rule right away, only I would make the uptick amount 4/10th's which would just about eliminate short selling, which I see as destructive.

Hanlon's Razor:

It is important however, to keep a real close watch on it...

Hmm, Googling to wikipedia turns up this too:

I hope you are right. That gives us the hope that if Obama hires the right support staff, we can get through the next four years and still have a recognizable nation.

This situation is fixable. That is what frustrates me so. Lot's of folks know what to do, it's just that the people in the power to make decisions are not among them.

It's like I'm watching a bad car accident happen in front of me and there's nothing I can do to stop it but post stuff here and hope someone in a policy making position reads it and gets a clue.

Dear Leader may not be able to put all of Cloward-Piven into action if he wants a Dem Congress past 2010 and another term in 2012, but it seems like he certainly is doing some of it, either through incompetence or malice. What says you, KT?

Here's a theory! Obama is a wingnut plant who is deliberately tanking the economy so that the military can take over and install Bush as President For Life.

... Seriously, there's just no upside to tanking the Dow this bad this early. Unless the government is full of imbeciles. Which, watching this administration, fits the facts best, I think.

Obama is fumbling not intentionally trying to destroy the economy. If he does fail on the economy bad enough he'll end up with a Republican congress in two years and won't be able to create a socialist paradise. The Cloward-Piven conspiracy theory is just plain stupid.

Oh Killgore... so little imagination.

There was a ban on shorting financial stocks in the fall, IIRC. The average financial lost over 30% during that time. The free market always wins out.

I think shorting (so long as it's not naked) serves a useful purpose. One of the reasons why we're in this mess is because of speculation on the upside.

That "ban" was unworkable cause they left a wide hole in the options market. You could do all the short selling you wanted if you just did it using options. It was a joke, done by other people who did not understand how the markets work. And the naked short selling ban has not been enforced either. It's wide open now.

Interesting analysis, and right about goals vs. process; however, the Obamaites and Obama himself, as well as those pushing ID are baby boomers, not GenXers. It's the late boomers (post 1955) who seem to be into this more than either early boomers or Xers.

Are you referring to the exception for auto exercised options? If so, to include it in the ban would be totally unfair.

And I'm not sure how big of a role it played in the free fall. An option, unlike a short position in stock, expires. If the security doesn't move the right way fast enough, the option expires worthless. And there was plenty of volatility premium built in to the price of those options that making money buying puts was hardly a sure thing.

Personally, I am a little tired of this "Religious Right" smear. Many of the Christians I know and love are Democrats who voted for Obama. Out here in California the anti-gay marriage initiative was defeated by the high pro-Obama voter turnout. Blacks tipped the scales but the left attacked the "religious right", in many cases the attacks were physical. The left is forcing us into groups and voting blocks so they can control us better.
