i had my 16” Meade refractor in the yard and was looking at a receding venus and got my eye fried by an incoming jet into PITT. low angle stuff happens.

I’ve never seen anything like that. I did see something once which I called St. Elmo’s Fire. It was during an electrical storm and it looked like a plasma discharge in the sky. It looked like a ball of flame and was actually rather awesome to see.
