This thread is a microcosm of the reason why this country is in such a mess.

Way too many people treat politics like sports. We have to root for our team and scream insults at the other side, no matter what the facts say..

Charles, as I am unable to give you a hundred updings for that comment, could you please go ahead and adjust your karma upward by a hundred on my behalf?

Back when I used to hang out at digg.com (yes, it was a traumatic experience that left me rather scarred for life), every time the Saudis would execute a rape victim for adultery or some other horrible thing, the story would shoot to the top of the front page. And everyone’s comments would be about how this just goes show how evil that bastard Bush is, because the Saudis are Bush’s best friends. As though every other president of both parties hasn’t been equally subservient to the Saudis.

Most Americans don’t care what’s right or wrong any more — they pick a side, and then they process every event that happens in the world by trying to figure out how to spin it so that it helps their side. When I was growing up in the 70’s and 80’s, it wasn’t like this.
