See…if we had just remained a bunch of devout Catholics under the control of Rome, God would have protected Europe forever against invasion as a white Catholic Christian paradise on Earth. And from this shining bastion of piety men in sandals would have gone forth to convert the heathen. We didn’t need no steenking science!

I certainly do not want to paint with an over-large brush here. Most Catholics believe nothing of the sort. I have encountered some like Santorum who are inimical to modernity and enlightenment philosophy, however, and they are (very) dangerous if allowed near the controls and levers of power.
