They have been idealized a bit, but despite certain issues with women, gays and minorities, they also stand for a time when the nation as a whole understood a lot more about solidarity and promoting the common good and not just about the politics of favoring the elites.

It is my Greatest Generation grandparents (and my Silent Generation parents) that inculcated liberal values in my family.
