re: #767 Shiplord Kirel

There is an odd dichotomy in that. The religious right endorsed Bush early in the 2000 primaries and gave him a powerful boost toward the nomination. At the same time, the crazy-cons have always been a little skeptical of him, from his history of alcohol and drug abuse to his Ivy League education they never really saw him as one of their own. He was, rather, someone they saw as favoring their agenda for partisan reasons and powerful enough to implement it.

Mainstream conservatives are going to have to find a way to reconcile their social problems, but I doubt they ever will. I’ve found that the types who can’t stand/resent the Palin/Bachmann anti-intellect constituency are usually the Bushistas who look down on that, anyway.

A section of that crowd, like Breitbart/Hot Air/Malkin/Tammy Bruce etc supports the tea party but is sick of social/cultural conservative harping on the same old bugbears like abortion and lgbt.

Then there’s the issue of what arguments the the moneybags like AFP/Dick Armey/Freedom Works/Citizens United, etc are going to exploit them — economic/class-climber anxiety, or social anxiety. Lol what a mess.
