re: #72 HappyWarrior

I was asking the African-Americans in the community for their opinion on the matter. I understand completely about societal changes in the last 35 years. However, I did want to hear about people whose race was caricatured by the Governor and AG’s outfits. I feel you’re being far too cavalier in how you’re completely dismissing it IMO because frankly you weren’t the subject of the mockery. I think the Herring bit is a little more nuanced. More juvenile stupidity than outright racist from what I am observing but done in poor judgment which my AG admits as such.

It strikes me that there is great distance between doing the classic minstrel show blackface and darkening your face to dress up as a rapper. The first is pretty clearly racist. The second could be racist or not. As has been mentioned: Context. Nuance.

Is it wrong to put on a big blonde wig to be Dolly Parton for Halloween if you are Asian? Or a Caucasian brunette? What about cross dressing? Should Leontyne Price have sung the Madame Butterfly role?
