In the Windsor case that they agreed to hear a woman who went to Canada to marry her long time partner later inherited her estate. Because of DOMA the woman had to pay $400,000 in estate taxes that she would not have had to pay if the Feds recognized her marriage.

Interesting about Canada. I’ve gone through the whole inheriting process this year. It didn’t to seem to matter in a will what relationships of the parties involved married or not. You all pay the same tax rate..( I think )
It’s mostly lawyers doing all the work. For me everything under 100,000 was tax free. And then it goes up 1% progressively from there. so you could end up paying big cash after 100k. I guess that all changes 1-1-13.
