From what this guy wrote, he hacked into the system to demonstrate that they have very serious security flaws, which I have no doubt is correct. He says he didn’t even really need to “hack” anything, the exploit was so simple.

These organizations are often incredibly lax about security, and they’re not going to shape up until they’re forced to.

If they’re connecting their systems to the Internet without proper security, I’d rather it was somebody like this guy cracking it instead of a malicious foreign power really trying to mess things up.

Not to excuse what he did, because it’s completely illegal and should be. But that’s not going to stop it from happening, and we need to treat this as a wake-up call about securing vital infrastructure.
