Dodd Altered Stimulus Bill to Allow AIG Bonuses

Politics • Views: 2,241

In case you haven’t already seen this news: Chris Dodd AIG admission: Senator says he helped adjust bill to allow bonuses.

HARTFORD, Conn. — Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.) suffered a political blow Wednesday with the admission that he had been involved in key legislative changes that helped pave the way for AIG to pay controversial bonuses.

In a retreat from earlier statements, Dodd said Treasury Department officials had come to him last month urging him to modify an amendment to the stimulus bill that capped bonuses for firms receiving aid.

On Tuesday, Dodd had said he was not a member of the conference committee that crafted the compromise bill and said the exception had not been in the bill as he drafted it.

But late Wednesday, Dodd admitted he had been involved in the change.

DODD is a Traitor to his country. This stimulus bill is a fraud.

What do the elite do in a country about to go bankrupt? They raid the treasury. This is what is happening right now to us. The country deserves to go broke. Maybe this is a good thing.

The "Bonuses" were negotiated part of the employee contracts. Such as, "At the end of four years, if you don't leave the company, we'll give you $XXXX" This is quite common in the banking/financial industry. I have a friend that was an analyst at PNC Bank that had such a deal (for a whopping 3000 bucks.) This is just income.

That said, Dodd is still a lying sack of feces.

It baffles the mind.

Obama dropping vets insurance proposal

The Obama administration is floating these stupid ideas out there to see who will bite. US medical treatment is based on 4 systems: Medicare, medicaid, private insurers and the uninsured (which will now allegedly be covered by the govt). Veteran care falls under a CMS covered, but distinct VA system. Thus the govt. only has private insurers to wrest into the governmental fold in order to fully nationalize healthcare. Once the uninsured population begins receiving benefits, xpect new "taxes" on private insurance to cover that - which will also drive people into a similar govt. sponsored benefits plan. Voila! Universal health care from the state has been achieved.

Rep. John Lewis: Two companies owe over $100 million apiece

WASHINGTON - At least 13 firms receiving billions of dollars in bailout money owe a total of more than $220 million in unpaid federal taxes, a key lawmaker said Thursday.

Rep. John Lewis, chairman of a House subcommittee overseeing the federal bailout, said two firms owe more than $100 million apiece.

"This is shameful. It is a disgrace," said Lewis, a Georgia Democrat. "We are going to get to the bottom of what is going on here."

It comes from the false sense of superiority and ideal that they (the left) are somehow better, more compassionate and correct than the right. Too bad they are wrong, as they usually are when it comes to just about everything. You can hear the smugness oozing forth from someone on the left.

I think I was not as concise in explaining my meaning as I should have been. I am saying the smugness you see coming from Obama is in reality really coming from his teleprompter; the man is an empty vessel waiting to be filled with words, emotions, and experiences from his electronic master the teleprompter.

While I applaud that decision - tow points:

*) for future reference: any group that shows spine and stand up to PB0 and his minons and does not back down - will get a result.

*) this is a well-known ploy, used by LLL governments: throw a horrible proposal into the public, generate a big outcry, back down to show that you 'listen', and then, through the back door, indroduce the legislation you actually did want to introduce - with no outcry.
So watch out - this is not over!

And here is a truly sickening quote from your special friend, Nancy P (from that link):
"President Obama has listened to the concerns expressed by veterans' leaders and veterans' service organizations," Pelosi said. "We will leave no veteran behind."

Gah!

Not if they're brainwashed little children. FOX news in the last half hour had two children read their letters to President Obama, and what they wanted most was "Stop Global Warming," "Save Polar Bears" and "Stop Enforcing Immigration Laws".

Awwww! Their proud teacher of cursive handwriting may have "helped" them with their letters, don't you think?

Have you watched Saturday morning TV lately. Lots of public service announcements on how you can keep the country 'green' by turning out the lights and recycling and talking to your parents about the environment. It's deplorable.

re: #199 doppelganglander

Excellent. I've been wondering why he's been relatively quiet when people need to hear his ideas on the economy. I hope he gets into specifics.

Me too. He wrote this yesterday:

The President is missing the long-term effects of his policies

President Barack Obama’s actions on the economy have had the opposite effect than what was intended. His address to Congress was meant to restore confidence; instead, consumers retreated and investors sold.

His Treasury Secretary’s bank plan was meant to settle uncertainty; instead it added to it. Every speech, every interview, and every initiative has caused investors in America to recoil.

With consumer confidence plummeting to its lowest level in history and the stock market falling 20% since his taking office, it’s clear that something is wrong.

I believe it is that so far, Barack Obama has focused on the short term, on what I refer to as the first order effects of his policies. That initially plays well with some in the media and with the public at large. But investors are looking to see what the impact will be down the road. They don’t like what they see. President Obama’s economic policies fail to take into account second and third order effects.

It's good. I recommend a full read....

OT, but an interesting note. My boss just sent me some articles to read, mostly on things that wouldn't interest you, but there is one that is very interesting. There is (and has been) a lot of pressure to go to Electronic Medical Records (EMR). There has been ever since Hillary rammed her Socialized Medicine into the ground, but things are heating up on that front with a new round of Socialized Medicine coming soon to an operating room near you :-)

There is a lot of resistance to the idea in the medical field. The articale on the subject that my boss sent says that many (doesn't give a figure, just "many") doctors are saying that they'd rather retire than adopt EMRs, and one of the main reasons for this is fear of government interference. Fat lot of good your socialized medicine will be if there are no doctors around to actually do the work.

I somehow doubt that this thought has ever entered into Obama's pretty little head. Or whatever it is that he has that substitutes for a brain. I'm begining to think he is stupider than Al Gore, and that is plenty of stupid.

A top-ranked Iranian defector told the United States that Iran was financing North Korean moves to make Syria into a nuclear weapons power, leading to an Israeli air strike that destroyed a secret reactor, a report said Thursday.

The article in the daily Neue Zuercher Zeitung goes into detail about an Iranian connection and fills in gaps about Israel's reported September 6 2007 raid that knocked out Syria's nearly completed Al Kabir reactor in the country's eastern desert.

Ali Reza Asghari, a retired general in Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards and a former deputy defense minister, "changed sides" in February 2007 and provided considerable information to the West on Iran's own nuclear program, ...

"The biggest surprise, however, was his assertion that Iran was financing a secret nuclear project of Syria and North Korea," he said. "No one in the American intelligence scene had heard anything of it. And the Israelis who were immediately informed also were completely unaware."

No signs of unclenching yet.

I disagree.... mocking him is a great way to reduce his credibility. The left loves to mock the right, but goes bat-shit-crazy when it is mocked .... and is highly subject to ridicule in that it hates to be thought of as ludicrous.

Mocking is fine. I want better mocking. More effective mocking.

re: #264 eschew_obfuscation

Heh... the only reason it works is because Cuban doctors will do anything to get out of Cuba. The families of many are kept in Cuba so the doctors don't defect to host countries.

Most of the dictatorial, war torn countries in central Africa have been doing that for at least 20 years. Send someone to the US for a variety of college degrees (petroleum engineering is a big one) but keep the wife and kids in Africa so that dad goes home after degree program is complete. China does the same thing with its students. Of course, it doesnt work on singles.

Exactly, cover for The Obama, who most certainly knew about the bonus nonsense. In fact I strongly sense this was all planned in order to divert, stir up the populace, and channel attention away from the WH.Dodd makes a great patsy with his existing ethical problems.

and he feels the sting of the friend, now enemy, as fate has seen fit to reveal, what man is so unwilling to see;

those that climb to the top by any means necessary will tread on those who got them there. . .and the stinging feeling in the back will be the sword of collateral damage-

Feel its wrath, Dodd. . .

I liked this paragraph:

Israel estimates that Iran had paid North Korea between $1 billion and $2 billion for the project, Ruehle said.

Did Assad still get his bonus after the Israelis wiped out that much of the Iranian investment?
Also, what did Kim Jong Il spend all that on? Certainly not food for his people.

As someone in the chain of care delivery, I can say EMR is here. Yes, many of the older physicians hate the idea, the younger ones are already use to it.

My position has always been, let the free market decide. One aspect of the advancement in care which is huge, has been PACS. The whole digital radiology thing is on fire right now.

But we all know, the culling of data has been going on heavily of rat least a decade now. The very fact every claim is submitted with ICD9's, CPT's, or HCPCS is validation of that. The fun is just beginning, because the sabers are rattling about the launch of the ICD10 in the near future.

You are correct though. The government wants uniformity as it relates to EMR, and this goes all the way back through HIPAA, and the ANSI format. There is no doubt, this is in an effort to consolidate the bureaucratic stranglehold upon another sector of industry.

Strange enough we are talking about this now. I have spent the last 3 hours on the phone trying to get a firm answer from this government dept, who says you need to call this government dept, etc.

It is shaping up to be a nightmare if, and when it does come to fruition.

Canadian Government cuts off Arab federation funding

OTTAWA -- The federal government has partially carried put a threat by Immigration Minister Jason Kenney to halt funding to the Canadian Arab Federation on grounds of "objectionable statements" made by its president and other officials.

The government will not renew a two-year, $2.1-million contract, which expires at the end of this month, for immigrant language instruction provided by the federation. A $473,873 contract for immigrant job search assistance may not be renewed when it expires March 31, 2010.

The reason Sen. Dodd has changed his story is he has no clue what went into the bill in the first place. Second, as anyone who has ever dealt with, even tangently, Sen. Dodd's staff knows it is a joke. Worst among the entire Conn. Congressional Delegation. (Rosa DeLaura and John Larson maybe clueless but both have crackerjack staff's) No one in the Nutmeg State goes to Dodd for constituency services if they want something done. It is doubtful the staff has a clue what the hell went on with the bill or what they were actually doing when briefed by Treasury on the anything related to the Porkulous Bill. The fact that he is the Chair of the Senate Banking Committee means there is not any effective oversight from his office. The guy is a joke. Unfortunately the GOP in CT is pathetic.

I agree with ya on the second part. Unfortunately, on an earlier thread redc1c4 posted a cite of US v Carlton:

re: #308 redc1c4

I haven't looked up this cite, but it may not be: (note: It isn’t ex post facto, see United States v. Carlton 1994) from patterico's "the jury talks back"

I took a look, and he may be right. Here's just two snippets from Blackmun's opinion in Carlton:

This Court repeatedly has upheld retroactive tax legislation against a due process challenge. See, e. g., United States v. Hemme, 476 U.S. 558 (1986); United States v. Darusmont, 449 U.S. 292 (1981); Welch v. Henry, 305 U.S. 134 (1938); United States v. Hudson, 299 U.S. 498 (1937); Milliken v. United States, 283 U.S. 15 (1931); Cooper v. United States, 280 U.S. 409 (1930).

And:

The due process standard to be applied to tax statutes with retroactive effect, therefore, is the same as that generally applicable to retroactive economic legislation:

"Provided that the retroactive application of a statute is supported by a legitimate legislative purpose furthered by rational means, judgments about the wisdom of such legislation remain within the exclusive province of the legislative and executive branches . . . .

It does look like - at least at this juncture - there is precedent for upholding retroactive legislation regarding the tax statutes.

Bill of Attainder

Definition: A legislative act that singles out an individual or group for punishment without a trial.

The Constitution of the United States, Article I, Section 9, paragraph 3 provides that: "No Bill of Attainder or ex post facto Law will be passed."

"The Bill of Attainder Clause was intended not as a narrow, technical (and therefore soon to be outmoded) prohibition, but rather as an implementation of the separation of powers, a general safeguard against legislative exercise of the judicial function or more simply - trial by legislature." U.S. v. Brown, 381 U.S. 437, 440 (1965).

"These clauses of the Constitution are not of the broad, general nature of the Due Process Clause, but refer to rather precise legal terms which had a meaning under English law at the time the Constitution was adopted. A bill of attainder was a legislative act that singled out one or more persons and imposed punishment on them, without benefit of trial. Such actions were regarded as odious by the framers of the Constitution because it was the traditional role of a court, judging an individual case, to impose punishment." William H. Rehnquist, The Supreme Court, page 166.

"Bills of attainder, ex post facto laws, and laws impairing the obligations of contracts, are contrary to the first principles of the social compact, and to every principle of sound legislation. ... The sober people of America are weary of the fluctuating policy which has directed the public councils. They have seen with regret and indignation that sudden changes and legislative interferences, in cases affecting personal rights, become jobs in the hands of enterprising and influential speculators, and snares to the more-industrious and less-informed part of the community." James Madison, Federalist Number 44, 1788.

Attainder is soooo medieval.

I think the plan is to hamstring the country into subservience. Socialism is just another tool. Soros, et al, wanted a USA that was a cog in the "world community". (an oxymoron) He is seeing to it that our options for being "exceptional" are whittled away.

indeed. Add to that the a huge dose of revenge politics. The left will destroy America because it will soothe their anger over Bush V. Gore 2000.

How in hell is the bill of attainder just passed by the House any different from what Mugabe did (and is doing) to white farmers in Zimbabwe?

Why in god's name would anyone who is qualified and competent enough to help clean up the messes in these big corporations even consider exposing themselves to this kind of abuse?

Sen. Dodd should change his surname to Dodge.
You know the meaning of it.

re: #207 yma o hyd

Gah!

If CT reelects this dope the country is screwed. Wonder who the unnamed Whitehouse staffers are? Better keep those eyes in the back of your head open Chris, I see a bus in your future.

I live in CT. Many people are outraged about this, but sadly he seems to be the Kerry of CT. Worthless POS.

re: #100 JohnnyReb

Dodd is pretty much done here in CT and most people I speak to about it are happy, even the LLL ones. It seems you can be corrupt or a cheat in CT but once you start telling lies you are done. Must be the Yankee spirit here I guess.

What about that fact that the tax is targeted at a specific group. Even if it can get around ex post facto, (which it shouldn't) isn't that a Bill of Attainder.

Such actions were regarded as odious by the framers of the Constitution because it was the traditional role of a court, judging an individual case, to impose punishment." William H. Rehnquist

Good question. I don't know the answer, but I'm with ya that it sure seems that you could make that point - based on the specificity of the folks targeted.

It's okay that they got their "bonuses", because the congress just voted that they will all be taxed and the bonus will we gone.

House Approves Taxing AIG Bonus Bonanza.

Lawmakers are preparing to slap heavy taxes on employee bonuses at insurance giant AIG and at other companies that have received large bailout packages from the government.

Where do you think that money will go? I don't really trust anyone back in DC so I just have the feeling that this money will simply disappear.

If I were going to have the govt take away my 6 mil bonus, I would be getting a lawyer right away.

Besides, isn't the O's whole idea about stimulating the economy? These people would have spent some of this money.

So, someone correct me if I'm missing something;
What they did, was take taxpayer money, gave it to a bank, then levied a 90% tax on the bonuses the bank admins received.

Is this not how drug dealers launder money?

This is one of two things; a back-door, ad-hoc tax on Americans,
or money-laundering.
Someone please tell me how I'm wrong. (Cause I'm really freaking out about this)

Ok Everyone -

Sen. Thomas "Waitress Sandwich" Dodd is a lowlife "p.o.s." I am truly sorry that Sen. Lieberman couldn't say this today on the morning IMUS Radio Show, as he is under double secret probation for endorsing Sen. McCain for President.
JOE - I just said it for you and truly believe Hadassah, your wife agrees. That is all.
