As recession deepens, more Americans go fishing

"I'm seeing a lot more fishermen down here," said John Miller, owner of Bob's Sport & Tackle in Katonah, New York. "With the economy the way it is, people are getting laid off from work and don't want to sit at home and do nothing.

"The cheaper alternative," he said, "is to go fishing."

16 lawhawk  Thu, Mar 19, 2009 11:55:57am

I just bet hackers are licking their chops over the ability to infiltrate and infect countless hapless computers because IE continues to follow a troubling trend of providing an insecure browsing environment.

I wont take bets on when MSFT will issue their first major security patch to fix major holes. That's a sucker's bet.

17 FurryOldGuyJeans  Thu, Mar 19, 2009 11:56:08am

I use IE6 as my alternate secondary browser simply because I continue using 98SE, and I am constantly subjected to unwanted and unwarranted demands I upgrade to IE7 at random times I start up IE6. How long before I get lectured I MUST upgrade to IE8, which I can't run.

29 oh_dude  Thu, Mar 19, 2009 11:59:08am

I've tried to defend Microsoft before, but yeah IE7 is a piece of junk. The problem is however that using a browser for personal use is a no brainer, but what about in business?

We deploy MS Sharepoint services and only IE works with it. Sure you can use Firefox or Safari, but they don't support all of the functionality.

Does Apple or Mozilla offer a collaborative and content management server system? Nope.

IE will never go away. Sorry.

The House website shows
the following actions taken:

H.R. 1216:
to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 1100 Town and Country Commons in Chesterfield, Missouri, as the "Lance Corporal Matthew P. Pathenos Post Office Building"

2:55 P.M. -
Motion to reconsider laid on the table Agreed to without objection.

On motion to suspend the rules and pass the bill Agreed to by voice vote.

Considered as unfinished business.

H. Con. Res. 76:
expressing the sense of the Congress regarding executive and employee bonuses paid by AIG and other companies assisted with taxpayer funds provided under the Troubled Assets Relief Program of the Secretary of the Treasury

2:54 P.M. -
On motion to suspend the rules and agree to the resolution Failed by the Yeas and Nays (2/3 required): (Roll No. 144).

Motion to reconsider laid on the table Agreed to without objection.

2:45 P.M. -
Considered as unfinished business.

H.R. 1586:
to impose an additional tax on bonuses received from certain TARP recipients

The House Democrats were hoping to suspend the usual rules on amendments and such on H1586 to speed its passage. That motion failed. The bill still lives.

Bonobos are thought of as possibly the only animals who resolve their conflicts not through violence, but through sex. In fact, they are also believed to be among the only animals, other than humans, who have sex for fun, as opposed to just for breeding.

Ummm, did you bother to look at the page you suggested? I didn't say IE7 tried to download, which this MS craplet tries to disable; besides the fool thing is for Server 2003 and XP only. I run 98SE.

All that happens is at random times during IE6 browser startup do I get hijacked to an MS page telling me I should download IE7. My home page I set to a blank page, and I dislike the fact that MS periodically hijacks the browswer.

Mac security researcher wins Pwn2Own contest with Safari hack

By Prince McLean

Published: 01:55 AM EST

In a repeat performance of last year, security researcher Charlie Miller arrived at the CanSecWest conference this week with a prepared exploit to use in cracking Safari running on Mac OS X.

Unsurprisingly, Miller was able to use his exploit to immediately win the event's "Pwn2Own" contest, generating headlines that suggested that Macs are inherently less secure, despite the fact that every browser involved in the contest failed on the first day.

The biggest security feature of the Mac is that there are too few of them to warrant a lot of work by hackers.
You want credit card numbers? They're on servers by Microsoft, Sun, IBM.
Want a botnet? You'll get a much larger one attacking Windows.
If you have specific Mac users to target, though, it would be worth the effort.

I'm reading the House floor schedule, and it shows the vote, but the title under consideration is a motion to suspend the rules and pass the bill. That is the confusing part - I thought that was just the motion to suspend the rules and move on to a separate vote to pass the bill, but everyone is apparently treating it like that is the vote to pass the bill.

Either way, this bill was going to pass the House, Senate and be on Obama's desk before long because the GOP doesn't have the votes to stop it and the con-law expert Obama is going to sign it regardless of the fuzzy constitutionality of the confiscatory tax provisions.

I think Americans should be ABSOLUTELY revolted and get active on this. If your government can pass an instant law taxing income that is legally yours in this kind of manner, it can happen to anyone in any industry. I haven’t installed it yet, so it may not be entirely fair, but based on past experience developing web software for Internet Explorer I admit to feeling a sense of dread.

Why is it that when Microsoft releases new software (IE 8), everyone gets a sick feeling in the pit of their stomachs -- but when Apple releases new software (3.0 for iPhone) everyone is giddy with excitement?

I propose, seeing that we've baild out GM that factory workers there who have in their contracts PAID VACATIONS give back the monies of 90% of them. So if you have say 5 weeks of PAID VACATION accumulated, you can only take 3 days paid.

Bonuses are part of total compensation per contract,. So is paid vacation, so whats the difference?

It has probably been discussed , but did everybody hear the Coach K of Duke blasted Obama? Barry picked Louiisville during his inane brackets spectacle.
Coach K said & I am paraphrasing, I respect the job that he is doing( now invoke the but rule, "Forget what I just said, this is what I mean") but he should be spending his time on the economy , not playing with brackets.
I immediately changed my brackets & now have Duke defeating Louisville for the title.

Most of these bonuses were retention bonuses paid to employees who agreed to stay in what they knew were dead end jobs to wind down and close out parts of AIG. It was to the benefit of AIG (and the taxpayers) to keep those people who knew what was going on. Without the bonus money most of these people would have walked and went looking for new jobs sooner which would have been to their advantage.

They agreed to do a job for a offered amount of money. That is called a contract. The fact that these people (who were not responsible for the AIG meltdown) are now going to be punished by the government for political purposes runs counter to every concept of fairness and decency.

I was so annoyed with IE7 and not terribly impressed with FF (which seems to makes me a minority here) that I downloaded IE8 beta several months ago. There were some teething problems at first but after the first patch it has been rock solid stable. I love the new features and even compatibility view no longer bothers me. If a site doesn't look right with text and tables out of place, a simple click puts everything in the right place in a split second. The one thing that bothers me is that I'm not able to change IE8 to full screen on more than one monitor at a time.

IE8 is supposed be compliant to WW3C standards and MS even issued developers warning on breaking changes in order to give us a chance to fix issues when pages are rendered with IE8 that worked on IE7. It is a step in the right direction and may actually be worthy of a trial period and the browser does have some nice features but I still like Firefox better....

I worked at a local school in the computer lab, and they had Macs crashing left and right, so much so I had to unplug the computers to get them revived. Not sure macs are immune to any common problems.

Also, I've been beta testing Windows 7 64bit, and it rocks. Latest builds have it outperforming both Vista and XP on performance tests. The beta is amazingly stable and I've had zero problems. RC1 is rumored to be out in May with RTm in August, with a possible launch in November.

Windows 7 is what Vista wanted to be but was too much of a pig...

Me? I use both Mac and Windows, and find problems with them BOTH. (Horrors!)

Wow...a lot of knee-jerk reactions and lack of critical thinking going on around here. I used to think that these traits were largely reserved for leftists but apparently not.

Of course Firefox is better than IE in some respects, and is faster in Javascript (especially in 3.5 which is due soon).

But IE8 is not bad at all. It is more secure, more user-friendly and at least twice as fast than IE7 was in most tests.

I always thought that most of the mindless drones who criticise things before taking the time to understand them were on the left. Let's not be like them.

IE8 is probably the best browser Microsoft has made since IE5 and is feels about as fast as Firefox 3.1 on my Vista-64 box.

I use both IE and Firefox, but if it makes you feel morally superior or more enlightened to spout ignorance and negativity at one or the other, then I hope you're proud of yourself.

BTW, Windows 7 build 7057 (pre RC1) is even faster and looking very nice.

I've read that latest builds of Windows 7 out perform XP and Vista on perf tests so I am stoked about it. I will install-migrate to it on every PC in my family (5 machines) plus I will move to it at work. I'm ready to dump Vista for Win 7!

Why is it that Macs are always the first get get hacked in white hat contests? Sure few worms due to market share (obscurity?) but very easy to hack.

I use IE6 as my alternate secondary browser simply because I continue using 98SE, and I am constantly subjected to unwanted and unwarranted demands I upgrade to IE7 at random times I start up IE6. How long before I get lectured I MUST upgrade to IE8, which I can't run.

IE6 is awfully outdated at this point. Personally, I'd advise you to go ahead and update to IE7, patch it up, and use it only for sites that won't render properly in other browsers...then install another browser such as Firefox, Safari, or Chrome for primary use.

Me, I use Firefox 3 with the IE Tab extension (among others) that allows me to switch between Firefox's and IE7's renderers on-the-fly from within Firefox...plus there are so many extensions for Firefox that let you add all sorts of functionality.

I've puttered around with Chrome some (it's cool, but not enough to switch ti it as my primary browser) and I've not tried Safari for Windows, but I absolutely love Firefox.

I just found out that the specific combination of 98SE and XP Pro is compatible; I updated (DON'T get the OEM version) and almost everything still works! (I do have some problems with 4DOS v7.00)
The install even patched the registry from 98 to XP. Netscape V4.7 still works.
IE7 works (not compatible with 98SE).
Anyway, although the install locked up 4 times, I kept at it and it all just works now. It's even faster than before.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why the )(&*(&^ doesn't Msoft pay attention to standards? A few years ago, I noticed that some sites would not display properly in Mozilla. I looked at the HTML code, and IE6 was re-writing the rules for RGB colors. Mozilla was rendering them properly, which resulted in dark blue on black text, which is really hard to read. IE has it's own color table and works with such atrocities. All those pages that used some excreble Msoft page building software were automatically building non-IE incompatibilities.
Not very nice. A few months later the problems went away and I forgot about it.
