Biden warns Israel off any attack on Iran

Reporting from Washington — Vice President Joe Biden issued a high-level admonishment to Israel’s new government Tuesday that it would be “ill advised” to launch a military strike against Iran.

Biden said in a CNN interview that he does not believe newly installed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would take such a step. Even so, his comment underscored a gap between the conservative new Israeli government and the Obama White House on a series of questions, including the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and Iran.

So now the U.S. government is publicly running interference on behalf of protecting Iran?

Maybe yes, maybe no but it does seem to be a continuing policy. I did a little search and found this:

Don’t bomb Iran, Bush warns Israel

BY RICHARD SISK
DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU

Wednesday, July 2nd 2008, 9:47 PM

WASHINGTON - President Bush and the top U.S. military commander warned Israel Wednesday against bombing Iran, suggesting the U.S. doesn’t want to get involved in a third war.

“This is a very unstable part of the world and I don’t need it to be more unstable,” Adm. Mike Mullen, the Joint Chiefs chairman, said at a briefing.
Bush said, “I have made it clear to all parties [including Israel] that the first option is diplomacy,” in getting Iran to stop enriching uranium that could be used for a nuclear weapon.

The warnings came after the disclosure that Israel had conducted air operations over the Mediterranean that could simulate a strike on Iran.

This was well known in the latter part of last year. You can find other articles in this search.

Obama team readying for confrontation with Netanyahu

In an unprecedented move, the Obama administration is readying for a possible confrontation with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by briefing Democratic congressmen on the peace process and the positions of the new government in Israel regarding a two-state solution.

The Obama administration is expecting a clash with Netanyahu over his refusal to support the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel.

In recent weeks, American officials have briefed senior Democratic congressmen and prepared the ground for the possibility of disagreements with Israel over the peace process, according to information recently received. The administration’s efforts are focused on President Barack Obama’s Democratic Party, which now holds a majority in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

The preemptive briefing is meant to foil the possibility that Netanyahu may try to bypass the administration by rallying support in Congress.

While watching the news about the Somalia piracy I was wondering when we were going to hear from our Commander in Chief. As the afternoon wears on all we got was a indecisive quip about the White House “monitoring the situation”. Well the pirates must be plenty scared by that. The only thing being monitored by Pennsylvania is the grit and guts of the ships crew. While Obama lounges around doing nothing the crew is undoubtedly trying to devise a way to free their Captain and save their ship. If Obama had any experience or if he was a decisive President he would have at least put out a press release like this:

“Upon learning of the treacherous attack on a peaceful American cargo ship, engaged in lawful passage in international waters, President Obama has ordered a naval task force with 1500 marines and a contingent of U.S. Navy Seals with all of their equipment into the area.
His (anemic) Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has also issued a statement on behalf of the administration demanding the immediate and unconditional release of the crew and the vessel. The US Navy has assured the President that the Pirates will find no safe port and will use all means at their disposal to protect American lives and property anywhere in the world.”

158 J.D.  Wed, Apr 8, 2009 12:22:16pm
…The leaders of Europe came naked to the Nato meeting last weekend, shorn of the cover provided by Bush-hatred. As the American commentator Robert Kagan puts it: “George W Bush did the Europeans a great favour by giving them the best excuse for inaction in transatlantic history.” Europe’s leaders have always claimed they would co-operate with America in all things, were it not for that toxic Texan with his unilateralist belief in spreading democracy and free markets.

At the Nato meetings, “weak-kneed” took on an added meaning – no significant permanent deployment of fighting troops to aid the Americans. Obama was prepared for the turn-down, although he did harbour the illusion that in the end Gordon Brown would come up with more than a few poll-watchers. After all, the President had gone out of his way to sprinkle some of his stardust on the embattled Prime Minister. Unfortunately, Obama had not been briefed by Tony Blair on Brown’s capacity for gratitude.

Turkey was a somewhat better stopover for the travelling President, who had no specific requests that could be turned down. The persistently fawning New York Times reported that the President was “showing more self-confidence each day on his maiden overseas trip as President”, although how Obama could show more self-confidence than he already has is difficult to imagine: this is a man confident in self to a point that is slightly unnerving.

Obama had won favour with European audiences by proclaiming that America has shown inadequate respect for Europe’s accomplishments. So he carried his I-am-not-George-Bush campaign to Ankara by implying that the US bears responsibility for “the difficulties of these last few years” between Muslim countries and America. No need to mention the World Trade Centre, Khobar Towers, the USS Cole or his support in the Senate for labelling as “genocide” the killing of Armenian Christians by Ottoman Turks. More politic to support Turkey’s application for membership in the EU, despite a mind-your-own-business warning from President Sarkozy, who earlier agreed to accept one – yes, one – of the 245 Guantánamo detainees because that is “what being allies is about”.

After having spent an entire presidential campaign playing down his full name and early years, the President had himself introduced to the Turkish parliament as Barack Hussein Obama, and pointed out that “Many other Americans have Muslims in their family, or have lived in a Muslim-majority country. I know, because I am one of them.” This, on the heels of his deep bow to Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah (the Queen of England merited what can at best be described as a deferential nod). There is more to come: the President will soon travel to an as yet unnamed Muslim country to deliver a major speech laying out his views on Islam.

The question for Obama is what he does about coming home with nothing tangible to show for his trip. He has made the war in Afghanistan his very own, deploying the forces that he claims were diverted from the real fight against terrorism by the war in Iraq. He has set forth a reasonable strategy and been careful not to ask his Nato allies to join America in attacking terrorist bases inside Pakistan. Still, a Bushless America, with a coherent strategy, making a measured request for help, could not win over European leaders who have learned to free-ride on America. After all, the Europeans have their welfare states to fund, and Britain is so broke that ministers are leaking stories about the non-humiliating virtues of an IMF bail-out.

The usually soft-spoken Charles Krauthammer…
President Barack Obama is going home with non, nein and no ringing in his ears

No, not really. So why does the US State Department think it has the right to tell Israel how to handle terrorism directed at Israelis?

AFAIK, it is a violation of international law to carry weapons aboard a civilian ship such as this one. Which never stops the pirates for some reason.

I was wondering about that. Well, might be time to change that law.

I think there’s a big difference in having a ship that can declare itself completely “un-armed”, for both smuggling and traditional maritime/naval purposes, and one that has even the smallest amount of weaponry on board. It may be an archaic ideal, but I remember learning about the distinction in some class or another.
Still, it’s stupid not to at least allow personal arms in a friggin’ “pirate zone”. I assume whatever rules there are get bent regularly.

If there was a sub with Seals on board, they could board the ship in the dark and take it over. The SDV (Swimmer Delivery Vehicle) is a small electric sub carried by the larger subs, and wouldn’t make the noise of a surface boat. For that matter, it would just have to stay submerged and release the Seals.

Not quick enough. We should have VERY rapid response capacity in these waters. Are you listening, Secretary Gates?

If they’re in a lifeboat… hopefully that means the boat has limited or no propulsion, so they aren’t going anywhere. Perhaps after nightfall, get Seal snipers in place with thermal scopes, take out the pirates simultaneously?

* * * * *

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the only time the last democrat administration “rescued” anyone by force, it was on Easter Sunday 2000, from American citizens by forceful home invasion, and as a present to Fidel Castro.

I wish I had the time stamp on this conversation

“Colin Wright, who identified himself as a third mate aboard the ship, said, “Somalian pirates have one of our crew members in our lifeboat and we are trying to recover that crew member.”

Asked whether that crew member was the ship’s captain, Collin told the AP he couldn’t say anything else. Earlier, a person aboard the ship told the AP by phone that it was the captain who was being held by the pirates.

At one point, the pirates had held the boat and the entire crew of Americans. Wright said: “We’re really busy right now, but you can call back in an hour or two.”

Yeah, the SDV’s are very cool. But, if the sub can close enough to launch an SDV, they may not even need that. SEALs could lock out and make the swim. Just less to mess with.

SEAL have very inflatables with electric motors IIRC. At night they could launch from a darked out ship, or drop from a C-130 or CH-46 far enough away not to be heard. They could also HALO / HAHO in close to the ship.

Lots of ways to get a SEAL team on target.

Obama looks at climate engineering

The president’s new science adviser said Wednesday that global warming is so dire, the Obama administration is discussing radical technologies to cool Earth’s air.

John Holdren told The Associated Press in his first interview since being confirmed last month that the idea of geoengineering the climate is being discussed. One such extreme option includes shooting pollution particles into the upper atmosphere to reflect the sun’s rays. Holdren said such an experimental measure would only be used as a last resort.

“It’s got to be looked at,” he said. “We don’t have the luxury of taking any approach off the table.”

Bainbridge? Very appropriate name!

In 1800, Bainbridge was sent to carry the tribute which the United States still paid to the dey of Algiers to secure exemption from capture for its merchant ships in the Mediterranean. Upon arrival in the 24-gun USS George Washington, he made the tactical mistake of anchoring in the harbor of Algiers—directly under the guns of the fort. The dey demanded that he ferry the Algierian ambassador and retinue to Constantinople or be blown to bits on the spot. With great disgust, Bainbridge raised the Algerian flag on his masthead and submitted to the embarrassment of serving as the dey’s messenger service. [1]

It may be a step we have to take if man is going to exist into the distant future. Of course people waiting around for the rapture might find the idea of creating a sun to be sacrilegious but if we succeed in doing it then they can take comfort in the knowledge that it must be God’s will.

There is another pirate incident to put to rest, and get one right, with no friendly casualties.

SS Mayagüez

Casualties during the operation were 14 Marines killed or missing (ten in the helicopter crash and four at the west beach), two Navy corpsmen killed, and two Air Force crewmen killed. Thirty-five Marines and 6 airmen were wounded. Estimates of Khmer Rouge casualties were 60 killed out of a land and sea force of about 300.

re: #233 Kosh’s Shadow

If there was a sub with Seals on board, they could board the ship in the dark and take it over. The SDV (Swimmer Delivery Vehicle) is a small electric sub carried by the larger subs, and wouldn’t make the noise of a surface boat. For that matter, it would just have to stay submerged and release the Seals.

Technically the name was changed to SEAL Delivery Vehicle (SDV) a long time ago. I work at the Navy base in Panama City where they are built and where they used to be refurbished. Now, most refurb is done by Tiger teams at deployed locations. Several problems with using them in this scenario. First, there aren’t that many of them, so the chances of one being in the region are slim. Second, they aren’t that fast. A fast sailboat could outrun one, not to mention a motorboat. Wouldn’t these pirates be using the typical go-fast type craft that the cokers run from Mexico, the Bahamas, etc.? If so, they can do 60 knots or more. Navy MK5 Special Operations Craft would work nicely, but I don’t know how many of those exist either. BlackHawk with sniper on board, take out the engine and you have plenty of time to reach them later.

Report: Spies hacked into U.S. electricity grid

Spies from other countries have hacked into the United States’ electricity grid, leaving traces of their activity and raising concerns over the security of the U.S. energy infrastructure to cyberattacks.

The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday published a report saying that spies sought ways to navigate and control the power grid as well as the water and sewage infrastructure. It’s part of a rising number of intrusions, the article said, quoting former and current national security officials.

One vowed to write a letter to first lady Michelle Obama, pleading to her sensibilities as a mother, wife and lawyer. Another called on compassion. This is the time, the members of the Congressional Black Caucus proclaimed.

re: #425 jcm

…Unfortunately, the cyber threat to “the grid” is only one means of eviscerating the soft underbelly of American society. Another which has been getting increasing attention could be delivered via the kind of nuclear-armed ballistic missile that Iran and North Korea have been developing: a strategic electro-magnetic pulse (EMP) attack. As Newt Gingrich and others — including a blue-ribbon commission that reported to Congress last year — have been pointing out for some time, by detonating a nuclear weapon in space high over the United States, an intense burst of electrical energy would be unleashed.

The effect of that EMP wave on unprotected electronic devices and the grid that powers them would be at least as severe as whatever the cyber-spies have cooked up: severe damage, if not the irreparable destruction, to transformers and other critical nodes without which our 21st-century society simply cannot function. In fact, according to Dr. William Graham, President Reagan’s science adviser and the chairman of the congressional Commission on the EMP Threat, within a year of the loss of much, if not all, of our electrical and related infrastructures, nine out of ten Americans would be dead due to such afflictions as starvation, disease, exposure, civil unrest, and lawlessness.

Pakistan rejects U.S. plan

U.S. envoys met with Pakistani leaders on Tuesday to ensure that the $7.5 billion that President Obama plans to send their way over the next five years will be used to achieve common goals in the fight against extremism.

But according to a Pakistani newspaper, regional envoy Richard Holbrooke and Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen came up empty-handed and received a “rude shock” when a proposal for joint operations against al Qaeda and Taliban forces in the volatile tribal regions was rejected.

Dawn newspaper reported that Pakistan also asked the U.S. to turn over the unmanned drone missions over the territory to them, saying that the drone strikes were fueling extremism.

And The Independent published an interview with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday in which he said Pakistan would go after high-value targets on their own if the U.S. would hand over its drone technology and intelligence.

News Release
Statement Of Paul Helmke,

President Of The Brady Campaign,
On The Pittsburgh Police Officer Murders
For Immediate Release:
04-04-2009

“In Pittsburgh on Saturday, three police officers were murdered, reportedly by an assault-weapon wielding man shooting ‘hundreds of shots’ who apparently believed the gun lobby propaganda that an ‘Obama gun ban’ would lead to his ‘rights being infringed upon.’

“This was just a day after 13 were gunned down in Binghamton, New York by a murderer who reportedly ‘hated America and talked about assassinating the President’ while his former co-workers felt that someday he might ‘come in mad one day and shoot people.’ These shootings were preceded by a month of shootings including eight shot dead in a North Carolina nursing home, five in a Santa Clara, California shooting, four police officers in Oakland and ten in Alabama.

“After each horrific shooting, some leaders in Washington have said the solution is to do nothing, simply continue to enforce the existing laws, just as we have been doing. The gun lobby, meanwhile, calls for weakening our already paltry laws to get more guns to more people in more places. It is time for the gun lobby to stop stoking fear among gun owners with false claims about the government. It is time for the gun industry to stop capitalizing on those ginned-up fears to spread weapons of war among the public.

“The gun lobby’s rhetoric has consequences. Today, we have seen how profound those consequences can be.

Mr. Helmke,

These men violated all kinds of laws committing their heinous acts. By what syllogism do you arrive at the conclusion that one more set of laws would have caused these individuals to suddenly say to themselves, “Uh-oh! That’s a GUN CRIME, I better not do that or I’d be in real trouble?”

Using you methodology of placing blame would not Liberals be just as guilty in “ginning” up the fears? “US Senator, If I could have banned them all - ‘Mr. and Mrs. America turn in your guns’ - I would have!” Diane Feinstein 60 Minutes, Feb 5 1995

So the Congressional Black Caucus had a field trip to Cuba to schmooze with the despot.

It does raise some questions and highlights some facets of this body.

1. Why the living hell do we have a Congressional Black Caucus? Do black Americans have different interests than non-black Americans? Where does the Congressional Jewish Caucus stand? How about the Congressional White Caucus?

2. Just what does Cuba have to do with the “special” interests of the CBC, assuming one can dream up some justification for the existence of the CBC?
