The USS Bainbridge is on scene at the current pirate crisis.
This is the fifth ship in the United States Navy name for Commodore William Bainbridge.
The helm you see today on the USS Constitution was taken from the HMS Java by Bainbridge after the Java shot away the Constitution's helm.
While Commanding the USS Philadelphia against the Barbary pirates Bainbridge ran the Philadelphia aground and was captured. He was held for nearly 6 months before his release.

These can't possibly be REAL pirates. That stuff is the stuff of stories, myths. It can't happen in today's world. Captain Morgan comes in a bottle, Johnny Depp plays a pirate in the movies, it's just not real.

Yeah, pirate of lore had their own tall ships. Did they ever hold people for ransom and rely on the media for their PR? Somehow I don't even see these mutants as even being close to those pirates. Something tells me that these guys are just another case of modern day assholes.

For 15 extra credit points, discuss what the Monkees would have been like if Frank Zappa had been chosen for the band.
Quite a bit more - and less - palatable, depending on one's taste.
Question back at ya. What would Frank's music have been like, had he been chosen for the band?

Little-known bizarre Monkees trivia:
When ads appeared in the L.A. trade papers announcing that a new band was being formed, one of the people who auditioned to be one of the Monkees was...Frank Zappa!

They were tarred with that, and yes many of their songs were written by other outstanding songwriters of the era, hired by Don Kirschner...but Mike Nesmith was actually a fantastic songwriter himself, and won the right to record his own songs with the band.
(He wrote "Different Drum," later made famous by the Stone Poneys, for example. Also, many of the better but lesser-known Monkees singles.)

Those were from the Associated Press, and due to their major problems with people embedding videos from their YouTube channel without paying (which everybody else but the AP realized was the point of YouTube), they've been taking those down.
When they attempted to sue a TN radio station for doing this, the response was quick and negative. They've since backed down, and you can read about this story here.
As for April 11 in history?
1689 – William III and Mary II are crowned as joint sovereigns of Britain.
1865 – President Abraham Lincoln makes his last public speech.
1868 – The Shogunate is abolished in Japan.
1905 – Albert Einstein reveals his Theory of Relativity (special relativity).
1921 – First sports broadcast on the radio takes place.
1921 – Iowa becomes the first U.S. state to impose a cigarette tax.
1932 – Joel Grey was born.
1957 – Britain agrees to Singaporean self-rule.
1961 – The trial of Adolf Eichmann begins in Jerusalem.
1968 – President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1968, prohibiting discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of housing.
1970 – Apollo 13 is launched.
1973 – Jennifer Esposito is born.
1976 – The Apple I is created.
1979 – Ugandan dictator Idi Amin is deposed.
1981 – President Ronald Reagan returns to the White House from the hospital, 12 days after he was wounded in an assassination attempt.
2006 – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announces that Iran has successfully enriched uranium.
2007 – Two bombings in the Algerian capital of Algiers, kills 33 people and wounds a further 222 others.

Greetings, honored Zionist Honcoes and other co-conspirators! I was just reviewing all the great posts I missed while I was out working tonight. I see, for example, that we have another fine batch of hate-mail from our ever-creative detractors. This one is unpretentiously crude and vitriolic, with just the right touch of bile and inside reference, as well as an amusingly fruity tang of bad grammar. It is perhaps a little lacking in volume and shrillness, however. I give it a 7.
I was offended, however, to see one of the correspondents declare us to be an "arm of AIPAC." This is altogether demeaning, hurtful, and dismissive, since we are in fact the eyes, ears, and tentacles of AIPAC, as well as other conspirators about whom these wretched troofers know nothing. Mere arms are for hugging, which is he last thing in the world we want to do to our enemies.

To be a little clearer here, a sinkhole opened up just a 3 minute drive from my house!
To make it worse, the valve controlling the pipes broke off, so the only way to stop the water flow was to shut off water service to almost 2,000 homes!
Last I checked, they were still pumping water out of the hole before they can even get down and begin fixing it, so those without water may be without it through much of tomorrow at the very least.

1994 Corrina Corrina A housekeeper (whoopsi Goldberg) charms a widower( Ray Liotta) and his daughter ( Tina Majorino) (Comedy)
First off Tina as an 6yr old in this movie is the same girl that was on HBO Big Love as an 18 year..She is cute as a button and a great acter..
Back to the review..
This movie .and i've been meaning to see this..Really took on many racial issues in society when perhaps it wasn't such a white hot topic...The writers took on sterotypes head on and looking back sort of Naive...
Basically it is a sweet story..and entertaining.
You could not make this movie in 2009.. The Sterotypes are now against the law...
Jeez I knew Whoopi was pretty much a wacked out lefty..But my lawd..She is a very very good actress..
Ray plays the perfect part..He is a genius in what ever he does..Ray never mails it in.

Some YouTube aren't allowed to be embedded on outside sites. This could be the preference of the person who posted the video, or it could be YouTube itself imposing a copyright issue (instead of outright removal, they've just begun limiting embedding ability).

Somalis in Minnesota react to barrage of bad news
Sometimes Dahir Mohamed, who works behind the counter at a music shop at a Minneapolis Somali mall, winces when he turns on the news.
First he was hearing about the alleged suicide bomber from Minneapolis. Then it was this week's raids of three money-wiring services. And now, nonstop coverage of Somali pirates holding an American hostage.
U of M student Ruqia Mohamed"We wished it was someone else, like another community besides the Somalians. We don't want to be in the front of the news for negative things," said Mohamed. "If it was for the first Somali-American who won the Olympics, yeah, I could be proud of it. But not for somebody who is creating violence for others and making a mess."

Let's just split up the stimulus funds and deposit them in the personal bank accounts of the leaders of the Democratic Party. Do it on a sliding scale to cover everyone from The Big Zero to the precinct captain level.
If we must have political corruption let us have efficient political corruption.

Pirates on German ship fail to find U.S. standoff
Pirates on a German ship with 24 foreign hostages said on Saturday they had returned to the Somali coast after failing to locate the scene of a standoff involving an American captive on a drifting lifeboat.
Pirates had hoped to use the hijacked 20,000-tonne container vessel, Hansa Stavanger, as a "shield" to reach fellow pirates holding American ship captain Richard Phillips far out in the Indian Ocean. U.S. naval ships are close to the lifeboat.
"We have come back to Haradheere coast. We could not locate the lifeboat," one pirate on the German ship, who identified himself as Suleiman, told Reuters. "We almost got lost because we could not find the bearing of the lifeboat."
They'll regroup and try again.

I'm just up cuz I was having some annoyance about finding out where the elder warrior won was stationed. Ur district of Sadr City. Just one of those annoying confluences. I got his letter and Michael Totten posted his article Totten. It seems to take me a couple of weeks before I get, hmmm, comfortable, maybe accepting is a better word of where he is.
No biggie. He's trained, he's good. I'm the one with the problem.
At least it isn't plumbing! I HATE plumbing. I'm an engineer and suffer from the 'how hard can it be' syndrome. Gets me into soooo much trouble. Between that and having done a couple of years in construction... let's just say that when my wiser half said "the kitchen is OK but does the ceiling have to be so low?" led to a much higher ceiling (and a great deal of - concern - on her part).
I hate plumbing because even when you think you're done, you can turn on the water and find out that not only are you NOT done, you're worse off than you were.

They really wouldn't like it if I was Imperator.
Unfortunately, now they are going to have to deal with the crews of the other ships (human shields) and getting our US Captain out of this alive.
Why would they hate it if I was Imperator? I'd pay the fuckers whatever they wanted and then I would ensure that they NEVER had a chance to spend it and their children and grandchildren (if any) would have nightmares about what happened to the miserable bastards.

The Japanese are in the reigon as well. They sent two destroyers to go after the pirates in the Indian Ocean.....even though their Navy is supposed to utilized in defending the Japanese home islands, once could make the case that repeated attacks on Japanese shipping presents a risk to the security and economy of Japan and they're within their rights to deploy off the Horn of Africa.
The Russians are doing it, the French are doing it, the Indians are doing it, we're doing it.....and I'd be a little surprised if the Iranians weren't doing it (pirates seized an Iranian-flagged freighter carrying grain late last year....this is in addition to the Iranian 'mystery vessel' where the pirates became seriously ill after taking over the ship).

With this reminder I can deflect some conversations and warp things back to meaning from dogma.

Actually, neither was I. But there is.
When members of the Neturei Karta went to the Teheran Holocaust conference, at least one of them got the boot for it.
I didn't realize that Jews did the shunning thing. I've known members of not Catholic Christian sects that were subject to this that found it to be absolutely devastating.
I was going to go off on an historical rant, but it's too late, and I'm too fuzz-brained to make a go of it.

re: #322 Fenway_Nation
We used to rule the seas. We have created this problem by walking off the field. Our ludicrous new directives to cooperate with everybody and lead in nothing are yielding predictable results. In The USN, we might as well call it "talk with a pirate" day.
We are setting ourselves up to lose the next cold war by legitimizing the Chinese blue-water expansion. Next thing you know, we'll be training them in how to sink aircraft carriers.

The bridge owns this one. CIC should have a camera trained on that thing close-up 24/7, and the bridge should have a set of big-eyes or two that way as well.

One Hostage Dies as French Navy Frees Sailboat From Pirates
PARIS — France's navy stormed a French sailboat held by pirates off the Somali coast Friday in an assault triggered by threats the passengers would be executed, but one hostage was killed in the operation, French Defense Minister Herve Morin said.
My condolences to the family of the slain man, but at least the French are sending a message to these ass hats. Don't fuck with our ships.

Lack of orders would be my first guess. Not enough time for the fucking damned-to-hell lawyers to have come up with the appropriate ROE as desired by the completely useless ratfuck Department of State.
Unfortunately this isn't a Tom Clancy novel. No one is going to toss their careers to do the right thing.

[Link: www.hurryupharry.org...]
Indonesia’s Islamic parties lose half their support
"The big losers seem to be the Islamic parties. In 2004, they got almost 40 percent of the votes, but this year their support is only half of that figure. A question of loss of confidence, says [Radio Netherlands' correspondent] Michel Maas: “Many people voted for these Islamic parties because they were supposed to be ‘clean’, rather than corrupt. But in recent years we have seen many corruption scandals in which members of these Islamic parties were involved. The voters simply don’t trust them anymore.”

I'm sure they will. I am just unhappy that the moment was lost. The examination that I referred to was not of the inquiry type, but of the discussion type. Too little has been talked about in the way of possible, rational resolutions to the situation. Without communication between the hostage and the crew, there was very little time to react, and his action was totally unexpected. It's just a shame that if he was expecting action, it didin't happen.

Generally the people on the scene don't get to make up the responses when they involve deadly force particularly with collateral damage possibilities.
A decent C-in-C would give them authorization to use lethal response as they (those on the scene) deemed appropriate.
We don't have a decent C-in-C. We have the Obama administration and I guarantee you that he will NEVER, EVER, make a decision that he alone will have to defend.

Truth. But that fucking rocket got launched and landed somewhere because the Apaches were not given a blanket ROE that allowed them to fire on their own authority.
As I've stated before when my kid first got to Iraq they were not allowed to shoot someone on the road, in the dark, with a shovel, digging a hole, and dropping something in the hole unless they could guarantee positive ID of an explosive. Fucking Nuts. that got changed to basically if there is someone on the road in the 'bad hours' doing soemthing suspiscious, kill 'em. IED deaths went way down for some reason. Pirates Issue New Threat Over US Hostage

I agree with you 100%. They watched them unload the damn thing and set it up. They should have been able to attack from the time they first spotted them, therefore preventing the launch. Unfortunately, the ROE prevented that and those same ROE can be traced directly back to some bureaucrat who was afraid that his/her ass would be burned if something went wrong with the op.
The same thing is occurring with this pirate situation. Someone in D.C. is afraid to give the green light for a rescue attempt, because if the Capt. gets killed, "they" will look bad and will not be promoted.

We should be jamming all of their comms. We don't care what they have to say until they hand a weapon to the Captain and throw the rest overboard.

I was going to say something snarky like DINGDINGDING we have a winner,
but I won't.
There was an awful lot of political shit (my PC filters are off at this point) that went into target choices in the Vietnam war and I thought we had learned our lessons.
We haven't. We paint big signs that say we won't fucking flatten your pedophile prophet's monument even if you are shooting at us from there. We'll wait and and phone it in and get a culturally appropriate response team to evaluate the threat - aww, fuck it. You get the picture. I get the picture. Anyone with an IQ above room temperature that actually cared about their country gets the fucking picture.
What we lack now, and have lacked even in the Bush administration is people that cared more about their country than their own power or the power of their party.
Not making me happy.
And just to remind people, Robin Hood did NOT steal from the rich, he took back from the Crown and the servant's of the crown the TAXES that were taken from the people. The people that actually contributed to society.
Just sayin'

Why does it surprise you that we sit on our thumbs? What have we done to indicate that we'll do anything that matters?
Really, when was the last time we made an unmistakable statement that said "Fuck with the USA at your own peril"? When? Even Reagan did nothing after the Marines were murdered in Beirut in 1983.
We should have mad monuments of rubble that stated very clearly that we are not going to negotiate, or make nice, or sing fucking kum-bai-yah with ANYONE that hurts us or ours in any way shape or form.

U.S. military already prepared with battle plans for Somalia pirates, say intelligence sources
The Navy sent a warship to intercept Somali pirates Wednesday who hijacked a U.S.-flagged freighter, as commanders weighed military options for nailing the brigands' bases.
Retired U.S. Ambassador Robert Oakley, who was special envoy to Somalia in the 1990s, said U.S. special operations forces have drawn up detailed plans to attack piracy groups where they live on land, but are awaiting orders from the Obama national security team.
"Our special operations people have been itching to clean them up. So far, no one has let them," Oakley told the Daily News.

Good morning all.
Soon you will be able to cash in on "Global Warming"
Report: Climate Provision Would Allow Global Warming 'Victims' to Sue
An under-the-radar provision in a House climate bill would give plaintiffs who claim to be victims of global warming a way to sue the federal government or businesses, according to a report Friday in The Washington Times.
The Times reported that Democratic Reps. Henry Waxman of California and Edward Markey of Massachusetts added it into a bill they authored.
The provision, which was just released, reportedly would set grounds for plaintiffs who has "suffered" or expect to suffer "harm" attributable at least in part to government inaction. The provision defines "harm" as "any effect of air pollution (including climate change)," according to the Times. Plaintiffs could seek up to $75,000 in damages a year from the government, with $1.5 million being the maximum total payout.
The Times reported that Waxman is trying to accelerate passage for the bill through his committee, as the Senate begins drafting its own version.

What they don't understand or generally get schooled on is that those plans exit in a vacuum until the C-in-C says 'go'. Often, that is all it takes. Give the word, Mr President, we'll make it happen. the plans are there, trust me on that. Someone, hmm, who could it be.... think, think, think, .... The next Obama speech:
"For too long, America has been too dismissive of the proud culture and invaluable contributions of the Pirate Community. Whether it is their pioneering work with prosthetics, husbandry of tropical birds or fanciful fashion sense, America owes a deep debt to Pirates."
"The past eight years have shown a failure to appreciate the historic role of these noble seafarers. Instead of celebrating their entreprenuerial spirit and seeking to partner with them to meet common challenges, there have been times where America has shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive."
"Some of us wonder if our current Overseas Contingency Operation would even be needed had the last administration not been so quick to label Pirates as "thieves," "terrorists" and worse. Such swashbucklaphobia can lead to tragic results, as we have seen this week."
The entire story is hilarious:

They are ruthless thugs, but they have seldom been challenged. They take a ship, the insurance company writes a check and off they go. Unlike the terrorists, they are in no hurry to die, and there is no upside for them to confront the Navy.
As to the POTUS's silence on the pirates, I agree with him. Any comments by the President just increases the potential value of the captain, and could complicate the negotiations. The time for tough talk and action is after the brave captain is safe IMHO.

Political conservatism appeals to some who also espouse an anti-science agenda. I for one am not going to stop striving towards policies that I believe are better for my country just because some others I strongly disagree with share that goal.

That's not conservatism, those are fringe kooks trying to hijack conservatism. The focus on them is to make sure they don't gain too much influence, but you have to remember that most conservatives have priorities like family, friends, their business, their work, their community. They aren't really demonstrative. Don't let the kooks fool you, they are just loud and gaudy. The mainstream of conservatism is out there, and it generally wants to go unnoticed and be left alone.

Ron Howard Yearns for Less Powerful America Not 'Driven by Militarism'
Summary: Ron Howard recently spent lots of time in Europe filming Angels & Demons and the DaVinci Code. He was impressed by their peaceful and non-striving way of life.
“at a certain point I don't think we'll be so consumed with being the pre-eminent super-power and, you know, driven by sort of militarism and this need to export, you know, democracy.”
What Ron Howard doesn't seem to care to know is that the Euros are how they are because the U.S. military already exported democracy to them and has maintained it there for two generations, allowing the Euros to spend all their $$ (or Euros!) on their peace, love, dove lifestyle with no responsibility for their own defense (which is expensive). Ron (I love some of his movies) sounds ever so ignorant and provincial.
Also, anybody who wants to get out from under tyrants or machete wielding neighbors better take care of it themselves, because Ron and the rest of the people the U.S. voted in WILL NOT HELP YOU. They might even run interference for the machete people (I'm wondering about Obama's buddy in Africa who didn't like the results of an election and brought out the machete people - will Obama help this guy? Is that what this "weakening" of America is about? Is that why the pirates are holding off the U.S. Navy?).

Ignorance is a lack of information, not a genetic defect or a “cultural style;” and irrationality should be fought at every step. Irrationality powered the toxic tribal blob that swelled over Hitler’s Germany and swallowed up its citizenry as well as their murdered victims. The exact same thing can be said about Bosnia and Rwanda. Tribalism. It is what it is and does what it does and can be recognized if we are not decoyed by color.

Pirates have been searching the waters off Africa's coast to try to find the lifeboat, a U.S. military official with knowledge of the situation said Friday. They are using hijacked vessels and skiffs launched from larger ships, the official said.
Proof that we're dealing with morons. One problem in dealing with these thugs is their use of small, unassuming ships. With our presence in the area comes state-of-the-art surveillance technology; you can bet we're tracking each and every one of these ships to see where they are coming from, aiding in identifying the larger ships that are also involved.
Well worth the wait, if it pins down the location of a large number of those involved in piracy.

Oh, I understand that. In fact, I do agree with you that it is best that the President does not jump in at this point.
However, my point is that the POTUS has given plenty of indication that he is at best, a pushover. IMO, this can only mean that we can expect other groups to try and push as far and as hard as they can.

Good Rainy Saturday Morning.
Oh look! More good news...
PAC money flowing to Mass. delegation
Donations on rise since '08 political power shift
The Massachusetts delegation in the US House of Representatives is reaping the financial rewards of Democrats' return to power, attracting increasing amounts of campaign cash from Washington's influential business and labor union lobbies.
Since their party regained House control in 2006, the state's 10-member, all-Democrat delegation has secured the chairmanships of one major House committee, one select committee, and five subcommittees. And with those powerful posts comes more fund-raising leverage.
Donations from special-interest political action committees, or PACs, comprised 45 percent of the delegation's campaign collections during the 2008 election, jumping from 33 percent of the total in 2004, the last time Republicans won a majority in the House.
In raw dollars, the increase in PAC money flowing to the delegation also was striking, rising to $4.6 million, from $3.2 million in 2004, a 44 percent increase.

Because we're gathering information on exactly which ships and facilities those are.
If you've watched the military prepare for operations at all over the last several years, you'll know that they are nothing if not patient and meticulous. They're not going to do anything until they have as much information as they can possibly squeeze out of the situation, and their decision on what action to take will be based on the sum of that information - not on an overabundance of testosterone or too many viewings of Tom Clancy movies.

If U.S. Special Ops has a plan to wipe out the pirate bases, but the White House won't approve it, then responsibility for continuing pirate depredations on U.S. shipping lies with the White House.
Strategically speaking Obama clearly has decided to abandon the U.S. "Athenian" military strategy, which was to become a military superpower, and then use our superior military power to protect our allies. In exchange, we received favorable trading arrangements, and could forestall military buildups by allies and potential rivals by promising military protection.
By abandoning that strategy, Obama is ensuring military buildups by our allies and others, making the world a more dangerous place.

BI Targets Scammers Posing as Minors to Target Would-Be Pedophiles

Sexual predators who victimize children on the Internet are now becoming targets of a different kind of online predator – and law enforcement officials are hunting them all down.
[Link: www.foxnews.com...]
The FBI is currently investigating a man and woman in Miamisburg, Ohio, who allegedly engaged seven men, including a middle school teacher in New York, in sexually explicit conversations on the Internet and then "tricked" them into divulging personal information and financial records, according to court documents obtained by Fox News.
The man and woman also allegedly tried to extort money from some of the men by threatening to reveal the men's sexually explicit conversations online, according to the court documents.

If we went in, and killed say 30% of the pirates, they'd just recruit more in a few weeks, there is no real infrastructural to rebuild. It's like bombing the poor neighborhoods to reduce car jacking.
I'd prefer a "no ransom" policy. It would risk some innocent life in the first few rescues, but once they learned they'd get no money and die, it would stop.

Rick Moran is feeling the heat....
IF YOU CAN’T BEAT ‘EM, JOIN ‘EM
I will let you in on a little secret; if I knew in advance that a post of mine was going to get the kind of attention that was given my recent rant against Glenn Beck, I would not write it. Unless you are brain dead or a disciple of the Marquis de Sade, exposing oneself to the kind of personal attacks on my character, my heritage, my intelligence, and alas, even the quality of my writing is hard on the ego not to mention an emotional downer. Anyone who says it wouldn’t bother them is either lying or has never had it happen to them.
.....
I see the error of my ways. And this goes for anything I say about the GOP too. No more dire pronouncements of electoral disaster. From here on out, it’s tea parties and triumph at the polls for me. I promise to ignore polls that don’t have Republicans sweeping to victory in 2010. And I will enthusiastically cover the tea parties that are going to change America.I love this Glad Game. I’m warming to it already. It’s so much more fun when you simply follow the herd. And if it leads over a cliff, so what? Since we’re playing the Glad Game I would simply say I’ve never jumped out of an airplane without a parachute before so going over a cliff will be an exciting, new experience for me. And who knows? Maybe when we hit the ground, it will be made up of chocolate ice cream and marshmallows so we can come in for a soft landing and eat a lot of good sweet stuff at the same time!
It sure will feel good to be popular again.

You making the argument from 1787 about appeasing the pirates. Thomas Jefferson rejected that policy. "Millions for defense, but not one cent for tribute." Works for me.
We don't need to get bogged down in these locales. Periodic military sweeps wiping out pirate bases and encampments are enough, combined with a lucrative bounty program. Make it profitable for bounty-hunters to kill pirates.

That is Obama's decission. He has to weight the lives of the now 60 some hostages, the millions in ships and cargo, the number of innocent women, children and non pirates killed, how effective the attack will be on spread coastal villages and more.
So killing Nazis was a real bad idea?

Well said.
I have less and less respect for celebrities. What about of spoiled whiny assed brats. They live in a fantasy world.
It may be a fantasy world, but he speaks "the truth" for our current administration. We better not dismiss it thinking that reasonable people will keep helping stop genocide when we can or will even assert protection or rescue for American citizens. By not immediately trouncing the pirates, the administration has clarified that the pirates' well-being is valued more than the lives and freedom of movement of Americans, even if they are on aid missions. Remember that the captain jumped into the water and our U.S. Navy, which was on scene, did not have snipers take out the pirates. They allowed the captain to be re-captured (and what are they doing to him now?).

Hey FrogMarch! Great link - but you know, I'm more than willing to help President Obama out here. No, really.
It's simple Mr. President. We are now in the arena of foreign affairs. You - whether you are aware of it or not, your VP "Plugs" Biden is - YOU are being tested by America's enemies. Here is an EXCELLENT opportunity with minimum risk to stand up and leave any doubts about your capabilites in a foreign cirisis in the dust:
a) send one or two Navy Aircraft Carrier Battle groups to where those pirates are huddled in their lifeboat WAITING FOR REINFORCEMENTS NO LESS;,
b) have the aircraft (and maybe a few Tomahawks) destroy ALL the Pirate towns (I mean really, who the hell is gonna bitch atcha for whacking Somalia anyway?)
c) send some SEALS in under cover of darkness in our own little rigid small boats and take over that Lifeboat.
d) when the Pirate Reinforcements get there, let them look at ALL THE SMOKE on the horizon where their bases USED TO BE and what Motherships stayed in port USED TO BE and then politely ask them to turn over all the hostages on the "Reinforcement" foreign Ships, return the foreign ships to their rightful owners (our Navy can take over control until the Norweigans and others show up to claim their ships) and
e) go on TV, tell everyone how much it pained you to take such drastic action in which, MAYBE some "innocent" civilians were killed but after all, you'd act the same way when any American's abroad were endangered and want the World to know that; and finally
f) send DVD's (in the proper format, of course) to Putin, Ahmadinnerjacket and Lil Kim of the death and destruction we wrought on those Pirate sanctuaries.
Then get the hell off TV!

Good morning. The Somali Pirates are apparently now looking for a way out, that will not involve jail time according to a Somali Maritime expert.
If they give up Captain Phillips do we keep a bargain not to arrest them?
Remember, the pirates reneged on a deal to exchange Phillips for a hostage pirate when they got their guy back.
Get Phillips back. Then leave. They're hundreds of miles offshore with no gas and few supplies.
There's no point in honoring any agreement with thugs. There's no Somali government that would be offended, and the idea that we would be currying favor with the rest of the pirates is ludicrous. They operate independently, so dealings with the next bunch will be entirely different. We're dealing with an anarchy here; there's no rule of law to respect, and no expectation of present deeds figuring in future dealings.
If this report is true, it's a hopeful sign that the pirates are actually negotiating. I much prefer talking them down and getting the captain back unharmed to an ill-advised assault.

When Somali pirates hijacked the U.S.-flagged Maersk Alabama this week and took 20 Americans hostage, President Barack Obama refused to comment. It seems that our new president is desperate to do everything he can to distance himself from his predecessor, which is why his team has launched a campaign to rebrand the War on Terror. The results are mystifying. "Overseas contingency operations" is the new name for the war, while "man-caused disasters" is a euphemism for terrorist attacks.
Excellent read if you so desire.

A letter to the Editor in the Chicago Tribune pointed out that the Parade is canceled because of public urination, disorderly conduct, & drunkedness.

Conservative bloggers go to war
Other than that, Donald Douglas and others should stop going after Johnson (and people like Rick Moran who seems to agree more than disagree with Johnson these days). He is one of the leading conservative members of the blogosphere. He’s anti-Islamic extremism, anti-terrorism, pro-tolerance, anti-hate, anti-racism, anti-xenophobia, pro-conservative values, economic and social freedom. He belongs in the conservative movement, and he was right to warn the so-called “anti-Jihad” and the “conservative” blogospheres against the dangers of racist movements, both in the U.S. and Europe.
Stop waging war on the man, and embrace him for what he is: a great conservative blogger, who understands that the war on extremism isn’t a war on all those who belong to a certain religion (in this case Islam), who believes extremism and intolerance of all kinds have to be opposed, and who’s able to defend Western values and conservative principles in a rational, tolerant and calm demeanor. We need more, not less of those.

Once we get the Captain back , the captors need to be dealt with to send a message to the other thugs & they need to be hammered in their land bases.
One poster opined that, that would just help them recruit.
That's nonsense, these guys are not fighting for a religious or political cause. THey don't want to die.

Hobson's choice Iran or Iraq. We had more justification to go in Iraq. And don't disagree with you, but don't think Iraq was a complete mistake.
Iran has a better chance of regime change from within, the young Persian population is chaffing under the Islamic harness. But that has to be played right and I don't see any signs of anyone in DC who has a clue.

For a whole host of reasons, we do not want to "invade" Iran. HOWEVER, we should have and still may have to take out their nuclear sites. The longer we or any other interested party wait, the harder it will be. The choices between atrociously bad and really bad is narrowing.

UK police release 1 man arrested in terror raids in northern England
Greater Manchester police say today they have released one of 12 people arrested on suspicion of planning a major terror plot.
A police spokeswoman says the 18-year-old has been handed over to the U.K. border agency for questioning about his immigration status.
She says the other 11 suspects arrested in a series of raids in northern England three days ago are still in custody and being questioned.
Most of them are Pakistani nationals who were in Britain on student visas.
British officials have not released details about the reported terror plot, which Prime Minister Gordon Brown described as "very big."
Brown has spoken with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari by telephone about the plot, but no details of the discussions have been released. The British media has suggested the plot might have been set to begin as early as this holiday weekend.

Capt. Phillips gave the Navy the perfect chance to blow a hole in the pirates' little life boat and they didn't do it. re: #803 Killgore Trout
What Mr. van der Galien overlooks is that on the "right" (or a more generalized "conservative" segment) in American politics there has been a constant struggle over the years to excise two different (but sometimes overlapping) groups: the Birchers (and their associates), and the KKK (and their associates.) The latter became more of a problem after the conservative Democrats jumped shipped in the '60's, while the former haver been the primary challenge.
Ron Paul is a Bircher. While not formally a member, he was a keynote speaker at last year's 50th anniversary of the JBS, at which speech he acknowledged the importance of the JBS all through his political career and how much he believed in them. This is the "conspiracy" wing of conservatism, as well as the atavistic contingent who want to reject the idea that we are in the 21st century.
Glenn Beck, post Mormon conversion, is a devotee of Skousen, someone who rigorously defended the JBS and who outdid them in reinterpreting history through Mormon theology. Glenn Beck actively tries to propagate Skousen's beliefs.
It was important that Buckley denounced the JBS in the early 1960's and thus created a rationality-based conservatism movement that could contrast itself to the conspiracy-based (and xenophobic) right-wing that tried to establish itself in the 1950's.
It was the more rational Buckley-type conservatism that would later make people like Reagan acceptable to the American electorate.
Charles seems to understand the importance of this more than many of his blogging peers.

That's why I said what I did in my #764. There is no Somali government to deal with; ALL the Pirates that I've read about call two or three "Cities" all, strangely enough, located IN Somalia, Home Ports. So Independent operators or not, we take away those home ports, where are the Pirates to operate from - someplace that maybe DOES have a government or maybe they'll (the pirates) have to learn new job skills.
I admit that some very bad people will lose their lives; and some hostages too, but they will in the future; the Maritime Insurance agencies are ONLY PAYING TO GET THE SHIPS BACK, not to protect the hostages, that's not an insurance company's job; let's do it all NOW and stop this crapping on the US and other nations (though I care not what the other nations do).

Yep, exactly what we're proposing (I'd bet money on it) right now - still pay the ransom - if it's Americans - or maybe if it's any nation - from taxpayer's dollars.
I really don't understand what Obama's problem is with this - he gets to show military muscle against guys who really can't fight back effectively, in a POPULAR cause and gets the monkey of being afraid to do anything militarily overseas off his back.

I found this very intersting in yesterday's WSJ - Holbrooke of South Asia
His face tense and unsmiling, a young man from a village in Pakistan's western tribal areas tells his story, mixing English, Pashto and Urdu. He is the only male in his clan to get an education, but can't find a job, and blames a corrupt national government. Americans are bombing his neighbors, he says, tempting him to join the Islamist militants in his area. Across the room, another Pakistani turns toward his hosts at the U.S. Embassy and says, "You are hated."....
...After the meeting, Mr. Holbrooke looks shaken, out of character for a diplomatic operator who picked up the nickname "bulldozer" a decade ago in the Balkans. As he knows, these men who spoke so directly to him are the "friendly" types from the tribal areas -- literate, ambitious and willing to risk the ire of the Taliban fighters to meet him and Adm. Mullen at the embassy.
Their home regions of North and South Waziristan and the Khyber agency are familiar place names in this long war: as the world's sanctuary to al Qaeda's leadership, as the launching pad for attacks on Western forces across the border in Afghanistan, and as the source of the Islamist challenge to the civilian government atop this rickety nuclear-armed state.
The Obama administration recently unveiled a new strategy to enlarge America's military footprint in Afghanistan and press Pakistan to act against Taliban safe havens. Mr. Holbrooke and Admiral Mullen took the policy on a regional road show this week, and at every stop got a sobering earful. While Afghanistan's troubles are monumental, the nightmare scenarios start and end with Pakistan.

Hahaha // & Happy birthday to both of us...
