CBS: Palin Emails Show Infighting With Staff

Politics • Views: 3,771

CBS has obtained internal McCain-Palin campaign emails that show a lot of infighting between Sarah Palin and campaign staffers.

Internal campaign e-mails exchanged three weeks before Election Day offer a rare look at just how frustrated then Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin had become with the manner in which top McCain campaign aides were handling her candidacy. The e-mails, obtained exclusively, also highlight the power struggle and thinly veiled acrimony that pervaded the relationship between Palin and the campaign’s chief strategist, Steve Schmidt.

The episode in question began when an investigative report published on the left-leaning Web site Salon.com raised questions about Palin’s relationship with members of the Alaska Independence Party (AIP) when she was mayor of Wasilla. The AIP’s platform calls for a vote giving Alaskans the option to secede from the United States. It had already been widely known that Todd Palin was a registered member of the AIP from 1995 to 2002 and that Governor Palin had taped a recorded greeting at the party’s 2008 convention.

On the morning of Oct. 15, Palin was aboard her campaign jet and en route to New Hampshire when she happened to catch a disparaging CNN segment that touted the Salon.com story, complete with a provocative graphic at the bottom of the screen reading, “THE PALINS AND THE FRINGE.”

While shaking hands after a rally later that afternoon, someone on the rope line shouted a remark at Palin about the AIP.

The comment set her off. She worried that the campaign was not sufficiently mitigating the issue of her alleged connection to the party, which despite a platform that harkens more to the Civil War than the 21st century, continued to play a serious role in Alaska politics.

Palin blasted out an e-mail with the subject line “Todd” to Schmidt, campaign manager Rick Davis and senior advisor Nicolle Wallace, copying her husband on the message (all of the e-mails are reprinted below as written).

“Pls get in front of that ridiculous issue that’s cropped up all day today - two reporters, a protestor’s sign, and many shout-outs all claiming Todd’s involvement in an anti-American political party,” Palin wrote. “It’s bull, and I don’t want to have to keep reacting to it … Pls have statement given on this so it’s put to bed.”

Her reference to a single protestor’s sign and “many shout-outs” was indicative of Palin’s occasional tendency to take anecdotal evidence of a minor problem and extrapolate it into something far more menacing. The final of the three presidential debates was just hours away, which would mark the unveiling of the soon-to-be canonized Joe The Plumber.

UPDATE at 7/3/09 12:20:26 pm:

Meanwhile, Palin appears to be positioning for a run at the presidency: Palin won’t run for re-election in Alaska, source says.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is expected to announce Friday that she will not seek a second term, a Republican source close to Palin tells CNN. …

As the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee, Palin is considered one of the front-runners for the GOP nomination in 2012. Her decision not to seek another term as governor is sure to stoke speculation that Palin is seriously eyeing a run for the White House.

UPDATE at 7/3/09 12:23:24 pm:

Todd Purdum has a lengthy (and not very complimentary) piece on Sarah Palin in Vanity Fair: It Came from Wasilla.

CBS? Another 'throbbing' memo?

3 lawhawk  Fri, Jul 3, 2009 12:20:31pm

Who has an axe to grind and why is this coming out now? We know that McCain ran an awful campaign and his best move was to select Palin as his running mate. It was the biggest (and only) real boost to his campaign the entire time he ran.

This reads like someone is settling scores - the DC way.

Oh, hell this is no surprise. That 'leak' about the campaign buying clothes was widely atttributed to Nicole Wallace.

McCain's staff seems to want to throw all the blame on Palin rather than admit they had a mediocre candidate and ran a crappy campaign.

As they sometimes say, you know you're over target when you start taking flak. She's popular with the base, particularly those disaffected with the way McCain ran his campaign. It will be interesting to see what she does in the time after she leaves the Governor's house in AK.

15 jdog29  Fri, Jul 3, 2009 12:25:07pm

She was the most down to earth candidate. She is a tremendous speaker. Of McCain, Obama, Biden and Palin, she had/has the most executive experience.

The Gov't is scared to death she may run and win in 2012 and will spare no expense to destroy her.

Palin was attempting to bend the facts ever so slightly to fit neatly into her version of events. In truth, the box that Alaskans have the option of checking when registering to vote states the full name of the party, "Alaskan Independence Party," not "Alaska Independent," which would make an error by uncommitted voters more plausible.

Clearly irritated by what he saw as Palin's attempt to mislead her own campaign

What bull. Misremembering "independence" as 'independent' is not bending facts or attempting to mislead.

Utter. Crap.

In Big Shocker, Palin Resigns As Governor
By Eric Kleefeld - July 3, 2009, 3:22PM
Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK), the unsuccessful 2008 nominee of the Republican Party for Vice President, has resigned her office, effective at the end of the month.

Initial reports had been that she simply wasn't going to run for a second term in 2010, seemingly setting up a 2012 campaign for the White House. But this sure is something...

I have to disagree with you-- not about what you're saying about DU or Kos, because that's right-- but on the general meme that "libs are afraid of Palin". That isn't so.

Here is Jonah Goldberg at the NRO-- hardly a lib-- on Palin today:

[Link: article.nationalreview.com...]

you’re still taking flak, but not because you strike fear in the hearts of Democrats. You’re taking flak because you’re striking fear in the hearts of Republicans. For Democrats, fairly or not, you’ve become a laughingstock. And for some of McCain’s campaign managers, you’ve become a convenient excuse for their failures.

But while McCain’s strategists do not cover themselves in glory for scapegoating you, you are not without blame either. You do seem to think the best advice is for you to stay just the way you are. Leaders listen to the advice they don’t necessarily want to hear.

I'd urge people who like Palin to read JG's post; you'd find a lot to agree with in it.

(Alaska is the only state to have a negative income tax. - what a concept!)

Palin is a corrution buster so of course, they have to blow this way out of proportion.

Imagine what they would do if she had a spiritual advisor that was visiting foreign sponsors of terror?

Imagine if she came from the most corrupt city in America and was a main player in the corruption.

Imagine if she had worked cheek in jowl with an abortion clinic bomber.

And honestly, as as point of derangement, does anyone think that if Palin refused to produce her birth certificate, adamantly refused, the wackos wouldn't go after her with a vengeance?

It's easier said than done, but unfortunately, in order to re-enter the American mainstream, the Republican Party will have to come to terms with the fact that Palin was a very bad choice for the Vice Presidential nominee in 2008. Let's face it, her mental problems are all-too-real and all-too-obvious, and she's not going to become sane before November 2012.
I say this as someone who is still a registered Republican, and I will always be proud of my votes for Ronald Reagan in 1980 and 1984.
But the Republicans made a big mistake in 2008 with Sarah Palin, and this simply must be acknowledged, if we want to move on.

I've never been a big Sarah Palin fan.... however... would the world be different today if this sort of diligence in digging into the history of a politician and the personal associations, possible mental state, etc. been applied to our current president?

I mean, seriously, here's a woman who is governor of our most remote state (or second-most remote if you hate Hawaii), ran for vice-president and lost, and is now being examined in minute detail because she might run for president in 3 years? Seriously? Does this guy draw double paychecks from Vanity Fair AND the White House?

I mean, come on, if this sort of scrutiny had been applied to our sitting President from ANY major media outlet.... bah... I'd better shut up before the "volunteers" show up at my door.

Better watch out; you're trampling on sacred ground. Dear Leader Palin is the Barack Obama of the right. Criticize her at your peril.

All she had to say was a line out of Lincoln: The union must be preserved. That would have put it to rest.

Screw Vanity Fair, the favored magazine of Hollyweird leftards. The article is a rehash of the same BS from last year. They're afraid of her. If they weren't, they'd have stopped writing about her already.
