(CNN) -- The Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday approved the nomination of federal Judge Sonia Sotomayor to become the nation's first Hispanic Supreme Court justice, setting up a final confirmation vote by the Senate.
advertisementThe committee's 13-6 vote was mostly on partisan lines, with one Republican joining the panel's Democrats in sending the nomination to the full Senate.
At least five Republican senators have announced their intention to support Sotomayor, making confirmation by the Democratic-controlled Senate a virtual certainty

Hamas Airs Shalit Propaganda Cartoon
(IsraelNN.com) Hamas launched a propaganda cartoon of Gilad Shalit on Monday, playing it repeatedly on its Al Aksa television station, as well as on internet forums. In the film an unshaven Shalit is calling for his mother when visited in his cell by a Gaza boy who tells him that Israel does not care about him.
During the three-minute film, additional Hamas messages include how it would be betrayal by the boy to free Shalit, especially with many of the boy's relatives in Israeli jails. Israel is portrayed as being only a collection of people from Western countries, and Shalit's only hope is for Hamas to kidnap another soldier to make Israel agree to Hamas's terms and discourage Israelis from joining the army.

re: #10 wrenchwench
Which, depending on how you want to read the decision by the committee - was bipartisan support. After all, if a GOPer voted with the Democrats, that necessarily means it was bipartisan. However, the media wants to highlight that the GOPers on the panel generally disapproved.
As it is, the whole confirmation process is screwed up - and has been for years now.
And the President also gets to avoid the confirmation process altogether by establishing czars and advisers in roles that are already covered by the Secretaries of the various Departments - ex: Aldolfo Carrion is a housing czar, even though there's a Secretary for Housing and Urban Development. Both do the same thing (or should be doing the same work), but Carrion didn't need Senate confirmation, which means far less scrutiny on his shady dealings. Had Carrion gone through the process, he likely wouldn't have been confirmed.

Do you have any idea what these czars make? How does Obama's payroll compare to GWB's?
Here's the Bush payroll from 2006.
Here's some early indication that Obama's spending more on staff than Bush did in his final year.
To that end, the fact that the White House itself disclosed the information this year is notable. Typically, the figures are only made public after the required report to Congress each administration must make each year is leaked to the media. Instead, this year it was posted the White House blog Wednesday by Macon Phillips, director of New Media, "consistent with President Obama's commitment to transparency." Incidentally, Phillips is among the 123 staffers making six figures, at a salary $115,000.In tough economic times, the information is likely to face additional scrutiny, particularly since the overall White House payroll would increase from 2008 if all staffers accrue their annual wage. All told, 455 White House employees earn on average $77,320, up four percent from 2008. The median salary is $62,000, which means that as many employees earn more than that as earn less; last year the figure was $55,400. Unlike past years, however, the top salary has remained the same, a result of a freeze Obama ordered immediately upon taking office.
The 22 most senior officials who earn that top wage also includes staff secretary Elizabeth Brown, press secretary Robert Gibbs and chief speechwriter John Favreau. Meanwhile, 51 junior staffers earn the minimum salary of $36,000, including West Wing receptionist Darienne Page, press assistant Kevin Lewis and assistant speechwriter Kyle O'Connor.
But for the sizable number of employees who transitioned from the campaign to the White House, even those at the lowest levels are enjoying a stimulus plan of sorts - higher pay in addition to a much more prestigious address.

So when do the "Hamas in violation of Geneva conventions" protests start?
Didn't you know? The Geneva Convention is dead. The fact we took terrorists as prisoners instead of executing them as unlawful combatants kind of shows how much attention is paid to the GC nowadays.

I'm fairly certain the ACLU will be all over this drug testing of welfare recipients right quick should it be imposed.
OT - When someone gets a timeout to reflect upon their indiscretions here at LGF they receive a message at log-in to try back later. But, what do we see when we click on their avatar? The usual?
Back on topic: wouldn't it make more sense to require welfare recipients to show evidence that they have applied for jobs? Have cut back on their spending? Have taken up part-time jobs to get by? I would rather they show proof of initiative.

I'm going to withhold my judgement on her until she actually is sitting on the SCOTUS and renders an opinion.
To be perfectly honest, Sotomayor is a moderate/centrist. It's entirely possible that she'll turn out to be as big a surprise to Obama as Souter was to GHWB.
She's also the best appointment people on the right could hope for at present.

The additional tax revenue from people who normally would not pay taxes is enough to pay for the extra Czars.

"They" being the congressmen? Perhaps.
I actually don't like that poll, but I can't explain why, precisely. I don't like the idea that only the poor should be tested for drug use.
Yes, I was referring to Congress. They do spend like drunken sailors.
I can see your point about testing only the poor. For one thing, it might discourage people from getting the assistance they need for their children. It also seems like an invasion of privacy based on class. OTOH, I don't like the thought of people who get food stamps using the cash they would otherwise spend on groceries to buy crack. It's a hard question.

"Czar" as used by the media means only "person in charge of stuff". It doesn't automatically mean the person is a special advisor and/or wasn't subject to Senate confirmation. The first 'czar' was in the Nixon administration, and Bush had a ton of 'czars', ranging from a 'regulatory czar' to a 'cybersecurity czar' to an "AIDS czar" to a "birdflu czar"
Here's an old article about the Bush admin and czars:

Yes, now her confirmation goes to the full Senate.
re: #10 wrenchwench
Using so many "Czars" is a new wrinkle, but the POTUS has a long tradition of consulting "unofficial" advisers, so as to avoid the confirmation process. The term Kitchen Cabinet was first coined during Andrew Jackson's administration, and has been with us ever since, to refer to key presidential advisers who often (but not always) operate under the radar. What Obama has done is give them official titles and put them on the payroll, a uniquely Chicago twist on an old theme.

Exactly. The media bestows the term 'czar' because it's shorter and snappier and sexier than saying "Administrator of X, Y, and Z, blah blah blah" or whatever the legal title is.
The only people who are 'czars', in the sense of bypassing Senate confirmation.not subject to subpeona, are the Special Envoy/Advisors. Last I checked Obama only had a few of those (as in, 3 or 4).
