One cannot be deeply responsive to the world without being saddened very often.
I have a hard enough time being responsive to my email everyday... much less to the world.

I've always confused Erich Fromm with Ethan Frome, and I have forgotten who either are.

Erich is the guy who said:
There can be no real freedom without the freedom to fail.
He also said:
Why should society feel responsible only for the education of children, and not for the education of all adults of every age?
Ethan Frome... sorry, don't know him.

The reason for that is every state has a confusing web of insurance regulations and buying across state lines screws that all up. So it's either stick with what we have, or tell the states to drop insurance regulation and surrender that authority to the feds and have the feds create another screwed up bureaucracy to be a national regulatory body.
Turd Sandwich vs Giant douche again. Both options suck.

Been twice. Both times we flew into Miami, spent some time in South Beach, rented a convertible for the drive to Key West. That awesome drive over the causeway, what is it, 80 miles over ocean? brought loads of CD's.

Yikes!
Got the newsletter from one of my favorite model kit emporia today, Great Models Webstore (same one where I got that fantastic IDF B-17 model) and the header had this to say:
9-11 Sale ApologyEvent: On Friday night, just minutes before we left the office, I told our graphic designer to make a quick banner for the deep sale we intended to pursue for next week. I told him "9-11" and "Crushing Prices". Obviously, the rest is history when the banner showed a VERY POOR TASTE banner with the Twin Towers in the background, "Crashing Price" words in front of it.. and worst of all, seemingly "Arabic Characters"...
Apology: First and foremost, I, Loic Anthian, Owner/Manager of GreatModels, want to take responsibility for this error in judgment. It is MY company, and it is MY responsibility. I would like to apologize to all our customers and friends, and even to those that do not shop at GMW. I do care about the events of 9-11, and I do find the ad tasteless as well.
One item that seems relevant is that the "Arabic Characters" were just accidental. The fonts are "Carolingian" which is a style of font used in Europe, although adapted to PC fonts. It was never intended to be offensive.
Appreciation: We first would like to extend our heartfelt apology to anyone who had family in the Twin Towers, or relatives hurt in the current war against terror. Our appreciation is going to our Arm Forces fighting terror around the world (including the 3,500 French troops in Afghanistan!). Thank you to modelers who realized that this issue was not "deceptive or Malicious", but more "poor judgment". Lastly, we appreciate the Al Basra Group and other supporters of GMW who fought hard on the Newsgroups this past week-end to defend GMW.
I was doing something else last weekend and missed all this. Poor Loic! He's a great guy and runs what is supposed to be a fun and educational business and here he is victimized by a complete moron on the payroll, forced to apologize to the whole world for a grossly offensive item that appeared on his website. Note that he didn't say anything about the current employment status of the aforementioned numbskull but it's not hard to guess.

One cannot be deeply responsive to the world without being saddened very often.
Matthew Arnold, Dover Beach
The sea is calm tonight.
The tide is full, the moon lies fair
Upon the straits - on the French coast the light
Gleams and is gone; the cliffs of England stand,
Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay.
Come to the window, sweet is the night air!
Only, from the long line of spray
Where the sea meets the moon-blanched land,
Listen! you hear the grating roar
Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling,
At their return, up the high strand,
Begin, and cease, and then again begin,
With tremulous cadence slow, and bring
The eternal note of sadness in.
Sophocles long ago
Heard it on the Aegean, and it brought
Into his mind the turbid ebb and flow
Of human misery; we
Find also in the sound a thought,
Hearing it by this distant northern sea.
The Sea of Faith
Was once, too, at the full, and round earth's shore
Lay like the folds of a bright girdle furled.
But now I only hear
Its melancholy, long, withdrawing roar,
Retreating, to the breath
Of the night-wind, down the vast edges drear
And naked shingles of the world.
Ah, love, let us be true
To one another! for the world, which seems
To lie before us like a land of dreams,
So various, so beautiful, so new,
Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light,
Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain;
And we here as on a darkling plain
Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,
Where ignorant armies clash by night.

I'm loathe to give a hat tip to CNN most of the time, but they actually seem to be kind of sort of paying attention to the erosion of Freedom of the Press in Latin America.
Like what happened in Argentina yesterday. The article does provide some context, but even then, Cristina Fernandez De Kirchner doesn't look good.
Also, the current regime's axe to grind against Grupo Clarin doesn't seem to stop at politics or op-ed pieces. They also pressured the Argentine Futbol Association to rescind it's contract with a TV network owned by Grupo Clarin.

From the article:
The reform would also redistribute broadcast frequencies into thirds: one-third for private media, one-third for the government and one-third for nongovernmental organizations and other civil groups.
And how much you wanna bet that one third allotted to NGOs and other civil groups will go to ones supportive of the De Kirchner regime? The government is in charge of alotting who gets whatever frequencies. So in effect, they're nationalizing 66% of broadcast frequencies.
Simply put, the DeKirchners and their Judicialist party had their asses handed to them during the last elections and last I heard, their approval rating is in the 20% range. They blame Grupo Clarin and this is their form of payback (altho' they've been working on this legislation long before the elections).

Continuing the ocean theme...
Carol Ann Duffy, Prayer
Some days, although we cannot pray, a prayer
utters itself. So, a woman will lift
her head from the sieve of her hands and stare
at the minims sung by a tree, a sudden gift.
Some nights, although we are faithless, the truth
enters our hearts, that small familiar pain;
then a man will stand stock-still, hearing his youth
in the distant Latin chanting of a train.
Pray for us now. Grade 1 piano scales
console the lodger looking out across
a Midlands town. Then dusk, and someone calls
a child's name as though they named their loss.
Darkness outside. Inside, the radio's prayer -
Rockall. Malin. Dogger. Finisterre.

here's an awesome parody:
Stephen Fry, in his 1988 radio programme Saturday Night Fry, issued the following "Shipping Forecast" in the first episode of the programme:
"And now, before the news and weather, here is the Shipping Forecast issued by the Meteorological Office at 1400 hours Greenwich Mean Time.
Finisterre, Dogger, Rockall, Bailey: no.
Wednesday, variable, imminent, super.
South Utsire, North Utsire, Sheer Ness, Foulness, Elliot Ness:
If you will, often, eminent, 447, 22 yards, touchdown, stupidly.
Malin, Hebrides, Shetland, Jersey, Fair Isle, Turtle-Neck, Tank Top, Courtelle:
Blowy, quite misty, sea sickness. Not many fish around, come home, veering suggestively.
That was the Shipping Forecast for 1700 hours, Wednesday 18 August."

Well, that one has certainly lasted longer than the old Tay Bridge did. Which brings us back to the poetry, although I use the term loosely, because we are now in MacGonagle territory:
[Link: www.mcgonagall-online.org.uk...]
The Tay Bridge Disaster
Beautiful Railway Bridge of the Silv'ry Tay!
Alas! I am very sorry to say
That ninety lives have been taken away
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.
'Twas about seven o'clock at night,
And the wind it blew with all its might,
And the rain came pouring down,
And the dark clouds seem'd to frown,
And the Demon of the air seem'd to say-
"I'll blow down the Bridge of Tay."
When the train left Edinburgh
The passengers' hearts were light and felt no sorrow,
But Boreas blew a terrific gale,
Which made their hearts for to quail,
And many of the passengers with fear did say-
"I hope God will send us safe across the Bridge of Tay."
But when the train came near to Wormit Bay,
Boreas he did loud and angry bray,
And shook the central girders of the Bridge of Tay
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.
So the train sped on with all its might,
And Bonnie Dundee soon hove in sight,
And the passengers' hearts felt light,
Thinking they would enjoy themselves on the New Year,
With their friends at home they lov'd most dear,
And wish them all a happy New Year.
So the train mov'd slowly along the Bridge of Tay,
Until it was about midway,
Then the central girders with a crash gave way,
And down went the train and passengers into the Tay!
The Storm Fiend did loudly bray,
Because ninety lives had been taken away,
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.
As soon as the catastrophe came to be known
The alarm from mouth to mouth was blown,
And the cry rang out all o'er the town,
Good Heavens! the Tay Bridge is blown down,
And a passenger train from Edinburgh,
Which fill'd all the peoples hearts with sorrow,
And made them for to turn pale,
Because none of the passengers were sav'd to tell the tale
How the disaster happen'd on the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.
It must have been an awful sight,
To witness in the dusky moonlight,
While the Storm Fiend did laugh, and angry did bray,
Along the Railway Bridge of the Silv'ry Tay,
Oh! ill-fated Bridge of the Silv'ry Tay,
I must now conclude my lay
By telling the world fearlessly without the least dismay,
That your central girders would not have given way,
At least many sensible men do say,
Had they been supported on each side with buttresses,
At least many sensible men confesses,
For the stronger we our houses do build,
The less chance we have of being killed

behold, more mcgonagal
Beautiful city of Glasgow, with your streets so neat and clean,
Your stately mansions, and beautiful Green!
Likewise your beautiful bridges across the river Clyde,
And on your bonnie banks I would like to reside.
Chorus
Then away to the West -- to the beautiful West!
To the fair city of Glasgow that I like the best,
Where the river Clyde rolls on to the sea,
And the lark and the blackbird whistle with glee.
'Tis beautiful to see ships passing to and fro,
Laden with goods for the high and the low,
So let the beautiful city of Glasgow flourish,
And may the inhabitants always find food their bodies to nourish.
Chorus
The statue of the prince of Orange is very grand,
Looking terror to the foe, with a truncheon in his hand,
And well mounted on a noble steed, which stands in Trongate,
And holding up its foreleg, I'm sure it looks first-rate.
Chorus
Then there's the Duke of Wellington's statue in Royal Exchange Square ---
It is a beautiful statue I without fear declare,
Besides inspiring and most magnificent to view,
Because he made the French fly at the battle of Waterloo.
Chorus
And as for the statue of Sir Walter Scott that stands in George Square,
It is a handsome statue --- few can with it compare,
And most elegant to be seen,
And close beside it stands the statue of Her Majesty the Queen.
Chorus
Then there's the statue of Robert Burns in George Square,
And the treatment he received when living was very unfair;
Now when he's dead, Scotland's sons for him do mourn,
But, alas! unto them he can never return.
Chorus
Then as for Kelvin Grove, it is most lovely to be seen,
With its beautiful flowers and trees so green,
And a magnificent water-fountain spouting up very high,
Where the people can quench their thirst when they feel dry.
Chorus
Beautiful city of Glasgow, I now conclude my muse,
And to write in praise of thee my pen does not refuse;
And, without fear of contradiction, I will venture to say
You are the second grandest city in Scotland at the present day!

oh since we did Dover Beach by matthew arnold...we of course must do Dover Bitch, the 20th century revision by Anthony Hecht:
So there stood Matthew Arnold and this girl
With the cliffs of England crumbling away behind them,
And he said to her, 'Try to be true to me,
And I'll do the same for you, for things are bad
All over, etc., etc.'
Well now, I knew this girl. It's true she had read
Sophocles in a fairly good translation
And caught that bitter allusion to the sea,
But all the time he was talking she had in mind
The notion of what his whiskers would feel like
On the back of her neck. She told me later on
That after a while she got to looking out
At the lights across the channel, and really felt sad,
Thinking of all the wine and enormous beds
And blandishments in French and the perfumes.
And then she got really angry. To have been brought
All the way down from London, and then be addressed
As a sort of mournful cosmic last resort
Is really tough on a girl, and she was pretty.
Anyway, she watched him pace the room
And finger his watch-chain and seem to sweat a bit,
And then she said one or two unprintable things.
But you mustn't judge her by that. What I mean to say is,
She's really all right. I still see her once in a while
And she always treats me right. We have a drink
And I give her a good time, and perhaps it's a year
Before I see her again, but there she is,
Running to fat, but dependable as they come.
And sometimes I bring her a bottle of Nuit d' Amour.

that could be the funniest thing I've ever read. Only just recovered.
Often with MacGonagle's poems you think you are getting used to how bad it is, only to be shocked by a line that so transcendentally appalling it catapults you into a new dimension of banality. example:
The statue of the prince of Orange is very grand,
Looking terror to the foe, with a truncheon in his hand,
And well mounted on a noble steed, which stands in Trongate
And holding up its foreleg, I'm sure it looks first-rate.
And of course the staggeringly funny last line, which renders the whole thing useless even as the tourist pitch that it seems to be intended as:
You are the second grandest city in Scotland at the present day!
PS - Picture of the statue of Wellington at Royal Exchange Square, which remains to this day(along with all the other things mentioned):

By a bipartisan vote of 345 - 75 the House has voted to yank ACORN's federal funding.
Now the ACORN filth are scurrying around like rats caught in a spotlight.
I just saw ACORN CEO Bertha Lewis on CNN whining and begging for 3 months to clean house. It seems to me that the first step in the housecleaning should be for this incompetent executive to resign, clean out her desk, and haul her sorry ass out of the building.
And President Obama's deafening silence on ACORN, enabled and facilitated by his dogged supporters, continues...

But it's not her fault. This problem is caused by a few underlings down at the bottom and should not reflect on the organization as a whole.
Not like the whacko's carrying Hitler/Obama signs at the Tea Party rallies. Now there is a problem. As soon as the conservatives realize that their whole party has become infected with right-wingers, the faster we can get rid of the Republican Party and replace it with some folk who will get along with the progressives.

Attempts like this to swarm television call-in shows have been commonplace for literally decades. It's why shows use operators to screen the calls and filter out the nuts before they hit the airwaves, and it's also why they use that multi-second delay before actual broadcast, to catch those who slip through the first layer of screening.
That the show in question allowed this to happen is not a sign of professionalism.

Too much of a coward to do this while Charles is awake I see. You carved the dirty word into the desk and now you want to show all of your little immature friends over at the stalker site what you've done. You'll be a hero.
Unfortunately the majority of us over here are not so attention-starved that we need to do what you've done. We also know that the little support group for kids who have been told to get out of the sandbox that you're joining is a dull, dreary place where the self pitying moans of the aggrieved are constant. In other words, they got nothin' when not whining about this place.
But as you are so in need of attention (a nobody here = a somebody over there as long as you say nasty things about this place) you can just fuck off.

I'd rather get an account of what happened from someone I trust or care for, no offense.
Kilgore went over to HA early yesterday morning and made several posts with the N-word in them, to - as he put it - "push the envelope" in a thread filled with references to Michelle Obama as a "wookie" and to call them on their overt racism. In the end, Ed Morrissey issued a warning to the denizens over there that racist comments or those consisting of personal insults would not be tolerated and those making them would have their accounts blocked.
It isn't clear whether Kilgore's stunt precipitated this, but it's probable. Other possible triggers: a flurry of email to HA deploring the upsurge in vicious comments over there, along with the lack of moderation; one of the principles finally taking notice, after months of increasingly vile postings; or simply the confluence of all of these reasons, and perhaps others.
In any case, the denizens at HA are pissed - at Charles. Thinking doesn't seem to be one of their strong points. So sending the kiddies over like this is their form of payback. They've also announced that they will be doing what KT did in return, proving that...they hate his actions and utterly deplore them, but are happy to use them themselves.
More details on some of the threads downstairs. The way I put it was the KT walked past a cage of shit-flinging monkeys, banging on the bars with a steel cup.
There's also a fair amount of disdain for Kilgore over his actions which you'll also find. Personally, I think it was a pointless, futile exercise designed to be inflammatory rather than helpful, but those are the facts of what happened.

I'll do better than that..My Buddy Paulie makes the meanest homemade Dill sauce known to mankind..You can't eat fish without it..We are doing a huge Monday night Football BBQ party.. I am so stealing it and sending it to Reine for the next cookbook...Plus people don't realize to can BBQ fish on foil then wrap it up with cheese and bake it...
You make a sauce from heavy cream and white wine...
remove the fish from the oven and pour the sauce over the fish and add a little Dill sauce on the side..
It is heaven on earth

Heathen!! Heavy sauces on fish should be a crime!!!LOL.
I put fresh dill into the melting butter, simmer it for a minute on the lowest possible setting, then squeeze fresh lemon juice into the dill butter. Pour a little on the fish, crumble ritz crackers, and pour the rest of the dill butter over the crackers...bake.
The BBq fish sounds interesting, may give that a shot.
Thanks for the dill sauce, I can use it on several things..

In honor of the Idiot Flouncer this morning
A childish adventure in stupidity
Flouncetown...
Apologies to Downtown and Petula Clark
When you're alone and life is making you lonely
You can always go – to flouncetown
When you've got worries, all the noise and the hurry
Seems to help, I know - flouncetown
Just listen to the music of the traffic in the city
Linger on the sidewalk where the neon signs are pretty
How can you lose?
The blogs are much brighter there
You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares
So go flouncetown - no finer place, for sure
Flouncetown - everything's waiting for you
Don't hang around here and let your problems surround you
There are Beck TV shows - flouncetown
Maybe you know some little places to go to
Where they never close - flouncetown
Just listen to the rhythm of a gentle bossa nova
You'll be banned from here too before the night is over
Happy again
The blogs are much brighter there
You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares
So go flouncetown, where all the lights are bright
Flouncetown - waiting for you tonight
Flouncetown - you're gonna be all right now

"It's not hot laptop computers on men's laps, a polluted environment, gynecological infections or a junk-food diet: The main reason for the rise in human infertility is an evolutionary battle between the sexes, according to a biologist at Tel Aviv University. One in 10 couples are unable to conceive, and many external factors have been blamed. But evolutionary biologist Dr. Oren Hasson of TAU's zoology department suggests in the latest issue of the journal Biological Reviews that male and female reproductive organs are 'currently involved in an evolutionary arms race, and the fight isn't over yet'…Over thousands of years of evolution, women's bodies have forced sperm to become more competitive, rewarding the strongest, fastest swimmers with penetration of the ovum. In response, men are overproducing these aggressive sperm, producing many dozens of millions of them to increase their chances for successful fertilization."

The whole point of this exercise seems to have been next week's meetings at the UN over such issues. I suspect we'll see yet another lesson in on-the-job training taking place, as our new envoy and the Administration learn what it's really like dealing with the UN. Anyway, it's hoped that these concessions will make negotiations with Russia on Iran sanctions easier.

Jennifer Granholm retains our place, leading the nation in...well, something, anyway.
One of the best-known auto industry executives in the world has fallen on hard times.
Jim Press, who briefly ran Toyota Motor Corp.'s U.S. operations and spent 37 years with the Japanese automaker before joining Chrysler as one of its three top executives in 2007, is facing claims of more than $1.35 million for unpaid federal taxes and a personal loan.
The 62-year-old auto executive, who told the New York Times last year he wore a single string on one wrist as a reminder that material wealth is not the most important thing, may be one of the highest profile victims of Detroit's collapse.
Press blamed the elimination of bonuses at Chrysler for his failure to pay back the personal loan.
Chrysler went into a U.S. government-financed bankruptcy earlier this year in a deal that gave management control to Italy's Fiat SpA.
The distressed state of the Detroit area housing market, which has been hit hard by the U.S. housing bust and the auto industry's troubles, may be adding to his problems.
Press, known to be an avid swimmer, and his wife, Suwichada Busamrong Press, purchased a multimillion-dollar, 6,900-square-foot luxury home in the Detroit suburb of Birmingham in June 2008, taking out a $2.2 million mortgage with ING Bank, records show.

Hmmm, if you really notice, some of us don't. We have our own opinions, make them known and some of us rarely agree with points that Charles makes.
And then those same people do find insight in what goes on here. It's sort of like life, real life, reality, you know, what you seem so incapable of understanding (or caring about).
If you want to go through life "lockstep" with people who agree with you, and you agree with them, then that is your choice.
Most Lizards here like to think for themselves, and we make it known to each other, on a daily basis.
If you see me as a "Charles conformist" then you are either lying to yourself or blind.

But the audacious attack by two U.N.-marked cars on the heart of the peacekeeping mission raises serious questions about the credibility of the deeply divided government, which controls little more than a few districts of the capital.

I sort of agree, but blaming your inability to pay on not getting your bonus is, in my opinion, lame in the extreme. Bonuses should never be counted upon as income; that's why they're called "bonuses" in the first place. I strongly suspect that one of the reasons Chrysler finds itself in the dumpster right now is because so many of it's executives have this distorted view of personal finance, and it slops over onto the company they're supposed to be running.
I should also point out that I am no fan of Chrysler, period, since Nardelli took over. He's another prime example of executives who line their own pockets while bankrupting the company they're supposed to be in charge of, and whose time horizon is measured in months rather than decades and encompasses no one other than themselves.

And yet here they are, driving up the blog's hit counts, number of eyeballs, number of posts - in short, boosting every measurable statistic of blog success, and along with it the advertising rates the blog can charge. So, you agree with this... ?
"Robert, can you answer one simple question for me. This would help a lot in deciding what is really going on here. Which European political parties do you UNCONDITIONALLY condemn because of their proven ties to racist nationalism?" (Walter L. Newton email to Robert Spencer sent on Friday, November 07, 2008 1:16 PM)
And his answer...
"Actually, I am fighting jihad, and have no interest in or intention to investigate these groups. Insofar as they are fighting jihad, I applaud them. Insofar as they are doing anything else, my endorsement is not implied." (Robert Spencer email answer to Walter L. Newton sent on Sat 11/8/2008 10:39 AM)
Oops. Wrong answer, huh Robert.

Are you able to debate an issue, or just make wise-assed comments. I posted above an email exchange between Robert Spencer and myself, which explains his attitude about white nationalist groups and I was wondering if you agree with him.
Do you think you have a few minutes to compose an answer. It would help in discovering just what you feel about racism, bigotry and stuff like that.

Ok, we might have another one here...
roy blunt monkey joke
US Congressman Roty Blunt (R-MO) suggests tells extremely off-color "monkey" joke with eliminationalist undertones, at Family Research Council Action's 2009 Values Voter Summit.
Ok, the joke is kind of questionable. Bordeline. The Koskids are repotring he made some closing remarks about racism...
Here's the quote of Roy concluding his remarks at the Value Voters Summit, where he tells the crowd not to be intimidated by accusations of racism, and then refers back to his monkey joke:
""Don't be intimidated out of this fight. President Carter said if you disagree with this president, it's somehow fundamentally racist in nature... That's not what this is about. And we can't be intimidated into believing that that's what this is about... You do have to play the ball where it's thrown in this case."
That's a little embarrassing.

I'll see your Eric Fromm and raise you a Charles Mackay quote:
He who walks through a great city to find subjects for weeping, may, God knows, find plenty at every corner to wring his heart; but let such a man walk on his course, and enjoy his grief alone -- we are not of those who would accompany him. The miseries of us poor earthdwellers gain no alleviation from the sympathy of those who merely hunt them out to be pathetic over them. The weeping philosopher too often impairs his eyesight by his woe, and becomes unable from his tears to see the remedies for the evils which he deplores. Thus it will often be found that the man of no tears is the truest philanthropist, as he is the best physician who wears a cheerful face, even in the worst of cases.

That's why I've refused morphine after surgeries. I'd rather be in pain than have that terrified feeling. I just tell them that I'm allergic to the stuff, which is what I thought after the first time I got it. I assumed it simply couldn't be normal to have that kind of reaction.
Hopefully I'll never find out if there's a pain level that wipes out the weird mental effects of morphine.

Obama's first dance at the U.N.
“Every president worries about Castro giving them a bear hug or Yassir Arafat giving them a bear hug—and every president and his staff take steps to avoid it,” said Nancy Soderberg, who served as the No. 2 U.S. official at the U.N. under President Bill Clinton. “There’s always a very delicate orchestration of who he’s going to shake hands with.”
“It’s like the American Ballet Theater,” said one aide who planned U.N. trips for two former presidents.

Ha. I think you are right there..
A deus ex machina (literally "god from the machine") is a plot device in which a person or thing appears "out of the blue" to help a character to overcome a seemingly insolvable difficulty. It is generally considered to be poor storytelling technique.

ACORN wouldn't clean its own house, so now politicians, of all people, have to step in and do it for them. Of course the lesson that a few miscreants can kill an organization's credibility is lost on the Tea Party organizers who don't think having "a few" white supremacists, conspiracy kooks, Birchers, and religious fanatics is a problem for them.
"I Am a Member of ACORN" -- Is Legislator Blocking Probe? Relying on politicians to clean up ACORN is like asking the fox to watch the hen house. The difference between ACORN miscreants and the tea party miscreants is this - taxpayer money isn't funding the tea party.

Oh I don't disagree with that and I am fully behind the legitimate protests of the spending run amok and the Federal behemoth that has grown out of control. But when they have no problem with the Birchers, and conspiracy kooks and white supremacists jumping on stage with them, it undercuts their credibility and gives the opposition ammunition to discredit the entire movement. First all, the law that allowed the frivolous complaints was listed among one of Palin's achievements as governor during the presidential campaign. Second, the complaints were readily dismissed by the personnel board in a couple of months. The most expensive complaint was the TrooperGate which was filed by Palin herself. Third, she could have stayed on and tried to amend the law. Hillary didn't run when Starr reviewed everthing she did from the moment she stepped foot in AR until she left the Whit House.

Here's a link to her speech:
First things first: as Governor, I love my job and I love Alaska. It hurts to make this choice but I am doing what’s best for Alaska. I’ve explained why… though I think of the saying on my parents’ refrigerator that says “Don’t explain: your friends don’t need it and your enemies won’t believe you anyway.”
But I have given my reasons… no more “politics as usual” and I am taking my fight for what’s right – for Alaska – in a new direction.

Federal Appeals Court Voids Campaign Finance Reform Rules
Is this assessment accurate?
The three-judge panel struck down regulations intended to blunt the power of such organizations, including the controversial Swift Boat Veterans for Truth and MoveOn.org, which drew heavy criticism for spending tens of millions of dollars on aggressive advertisements during the 2004 presidential campaign.
The ruling, if it stands, could provide a boost to Republicans and their allies as they try to win back Congress in 2010 and the White House in 2012. Outside conservative groups could become particularly important in countering the fundraising juggernaut of President Obama, who shattered past records by raising more than $750 million during his 2008 campaign.

When Bill Walsh went to the 49ers I remember a lot of excitement in the Bay Area - he was a true innovator. But no one could have predicted what he was able to do with that team. The man re-invented offensive play.

There are varying degrees within each party...the Blue Dogs on the Dem side, the more moderate ones on the Republican side. It is quite harmful if there is only left or right. However, it gets a little fuzzy if it's only grey too.
That's OK.

It makes you wonder how they manage real life.
Most can't tell the difference. They've made this their reason for being. Insulting a blog host because they feel like their politics have been compromised and their opinions (gasp) threatened. They know how inadequate they are for this forum and how incapable they are at arguing their precious beliefs. So they lash out at certain posters that they could never debate properly or at Charles himself and can never get over the sting. Pathetic.

I was at that game. Wisconsin simply beat Stanford. It was hard to watch.
When Bill Walsh went to the 49ers I remember a lot of excitement in the Bay Area - he was a true innovator. But no one could have predicted what he was able to do with that team. The man re-invented offensive play.
Too bad that John Elway came to Stanford right as Walsh left. They would have dominated the PAC 10 for a few years.
The man was a pure football genius...I think his theory of clearing out zones with receivers was brilliant.. You sent 2 guys to run through a zone and out down field..It is now a empty piece of field..Where do you send the next guy? Where nobody is of course...Walsh could clear out zones...

What I would really like to see is for both parties to agree on a much quicker primary and GE cycle. This wouldn't blunt the money influence, but it would allow less time for it to have an impact. How about having primary season go from 7/31 - 9/15 and GE from 9/16 to November?

He also had swing passes available in every play. At Stanford its was "Swing pass Benjamin to Nelson" on almost every other play. 2 to 3 yards each time. They'd just move down the field - down after down.

So much more complex than that..A short pass is like a 5 yard run...Death by a thousand cuts...But what does that do? All the Linebackers and the Safety is protecting the flat pass or over the middle..
Meanwhile Jerry Rice is setting up a picnic lunch down field begging Joe to throw the ball...With a running back.. the west coast offense will ruin your day

Not just one sock puppet - at least 10.
Charles - you've probably heard of this, but I'll mention it in case you haven't. You can get a free database of IP addresses linked to zip codes, and a server-side script to automatically look up the zip, city and state of each visitor, at this site; the "lite" version is free, and differs from the paid version only in accuracy. It's updated monthly, so the accuracy simply lags that of the paid version.
It's generally very accurate, at least down to the city level. I've used it for web-based astronomy programs that need to know the user's latitude and longitude (which it also provides) but on one occasion I used it for troll intimidation. They suddenly lost interest when I mentioned that they were posting from Jackson, Michigan, without them providing any information at all.
Lots of other interesting uses for such a tool. Anyway, it's out there if you're interested.

I'm glad you think so.
The woman accused me of murdering my own father because she knew it would hurt me very deeply... a childish and ugly act of mean-spirited revenge for a comment that she "heard" that I made, but never actually read. And to think that this is a woman that I once trusted to pray for my son.
Any respect that I ever had for GoTC is long gone.
I will never forget what she said about me, and I will never forgive it.
If she wants to stand up to "evil", then she needs to start by taking an honest look in the mirror.
