The Door Opens - Update: The Door Closes

Open • Views: 1,653

Here’s a midday open thread, with open registration for a limited time. The ‘Register’ link is at the top of the left sidebar.

Read all the rules before you register, and commit them to memory. The short version:

  • Don’t register with a proxy.
  • Don’t register with a throwaway email address.
  • Don’t register more than one account at a time.
  • Don’t be a jerk.
  • Don’t be a troll.
  • Don’t be a sock puppet. Stinky Beaumont hates sock puppets. He will find you.
  • If you’re registering just to post a dramatic “goodbye cruel world” comment full of insults and drool, don’t waste your time. Nobody’s going to read it. It will be immediately deleted and your account will be blocked.
  • Do play nice.

And then everything will be groovy.

UPDATE at 10/11/09 3:56:44 pm:

And once again, the door of opportunity has closed, with 40 hatchlings.

Yay! LGF has recently become my favorite site. Charles is firmly on the side of reason, science and The Enlightenment. Been reading the blog for at least a year but haven’t been lucky enough to register yet. Perhaps because I live in Japan.

Dear Newbies (possibly from Fark)-

Welcome to LGF! If you need something to help break the commenting ice, how about telling us what brought you to LGF? Always an interesting story.

Hope you have fun, just remember to play nice.

Sincerely, Sharmuta

I like the new rule!

If you’re registering just to post a dramatic “goodbye cruel world” comment full of insults and drool, don’t waste your time. Nobody’s going to read it. It will be immediately deleted and your account will be blocked.

Indeed- please spare us and find a better hobby.

I’ve always had mixed feeling about V for Vendetta. Guy Fawkes is kind of questionable as a hero. He planned a terrorist bombing for religious reasons. Had he been successful, England would have had no government and thus would have been exposed to invasion by France and Spain. Had Fawkes succeeded, the English Law system from which America’s legal tradition springs might have never fully come into being.

The Gunpowder Plot was in 1605. Fawkes was executed the next year, so the plot was a Catholic attempt to remove Protestants from the English throne. If he’d succeeded, a lot of Catholics in Parliament would also have died, ironically. But V for Vendetta is futuristic, right? (Haven’t seen it since it came out.)

re: #107 arethusa

That’s right! We wouldn’t have gotten the KJV (1611) if he had succeeded. The movie is based on a left wing graphic novel from the 80’s which obviously used the historical events very loosely. It’s only futuristic in that hte events described haven’t yet occurred. But it’s really a diatribe against right wing politics wedded to religious ideology. I’m so glad we don’t have that to worry about in real life!

122 Jack Burton  Sun, Oct 11, 2009 4:20:46pm

re: #99 Dark_Falcon

I’ve always had mixed feeling about V for Vendetta. Guy Fawkes is kind of questionable as a hero. He planned a terrorist bombing for religious reasons. Had he been successful, England would have had no government and thus would have been exposed to invasion by France and Spain. Had Fawkes succeeded, the English Law system from which America’s legal tradition springs might have never fully come into being.

It’s one of those movies if you purposely dumbdown the political side of your brain, it’s enjoyable. I had a hard time doing it with this. The original comics by Alan Moore were a product of TDS (Thatcher Derangement Syndrome). The Wachowskis took that and turned it into a thinly veiled Bush-bashing film. Even Alan Moore himself was irate about that. Quoted in wiki:

“[The movie] has been “turned into a Bush-era parable by people too timid to set a political satire in their own country… It’s a thwarted and frustrated and largely impotent American liberal fantasy of someone with American liberal values standing up against a state run by neoconservatives—which is not what the comic V for Vendetta was about. It was about fascism, it was about anarchy, it was about England.”

“They” (i.e. Hollywood assholes) screw up everything they touch when it comes to Moore’s work. In fact, this is the case with most comic book-to-screen projects. Iron Man, the 1989 Batman, and the new Nolan Batman movies are the few exceptions. X-Men and Spiderman started of strong but turned to crap after the first movie of each.

He was in Highlander II, but only as a cameo. ;)

The League movie was okay, as far as Hollywood action-fantasy goes, but but the comics were excellent. Like so many adaptations, the movie bears a superficial resemblance but lacks any of the depth.

I saw Zardoz along with some odd spaghetti western with monks living in a stockade, who were fist-fighting over paper dollars blowing around at one point. “Every monk whose a monk, punch a monk” said one of the main characters.

What a cool spaghetti western. One of the heros farted a lot, the other one wouldn’t ride his horse, but slept on a travois while being pulled behind it. One of them was called “Bambino.”

I can’t remember the movie’s name.

You’re supposed to find the icon on the left of the taskbar that is for “safely remove device” and click it to eject the current USB drive. Otherwise, if it is writing to the drive at the time, it will get corrupted.

Nope. Just going forward, and you probably did not lose data, but it could happen, but not likely. A friend of mine did once, ONE time.

Windows notifying you of an unsafe removal doesn’t mean anything has gone wrong, it’s just a warning. 9 times out of 10 you’re fine.

Not necessarily.

What the “safely remove hardware” function does is power down (power off) that particular USB port (socket) — letting you pull the device thingy out without risking an unfortunate electronic whatchamacallit.

It actually makes sure Windows is done writing anything on it, and nothing is being read, either. Unfortunately, Windumbs has programs that want to keep using drives even when you don’t want to, and it will sometimes not let you eject the device.
So far, in over 2 years, Mac OSX has complained ONCE. Windows does often.

It does more than that, it is necessary to prevent loss of data. You can set your USB Drive thingies for quick removal which will eliminate the need to click the “safe to disconnect” thingy.

Dobson addresses the Council for National Policy

The super-secret Council for National Policy - whose members include some of the most powerful conservatives in the country — met in Austin recently to hear dark warnings about all things Obama. The event was closed — in fact, it wasn’t even listed on the hotel’s public calendar — but a pirated copy of an address by influential radio commentator James Dobson has emerged. Dobson delivered a jeremiad against Obama, warning that only a resurgence of Republican power can “save America from national disaster.”

Dobson didn’t have much good to say about the president. He warned that America is “in greater danger than any time since the Civil War” with Obama in power. But he also scolded the GOP for the “ruinous spending” of the Bush years and cautioned that cooperation with Democrats or party-building efforts to appeal to moderates “will leave the party in the minority for the next 40 years.

Members of the CNP have included Phyllis Schlafly, former AG Ed Meese, Rev. Pat Robertson, conservative direct-mail guru Richard Viguerie, the late Jerry Falwell, founder of controversial Blackwater the private security firm and the late Cleon Skousen (the John Birch Society conspiracy theorist touted by Gov. Rick Perry in reelection speeches to religious conservatives). Perry hosted a CNP reception last Thursday night at the Capitol.

There’s video at the link.

They have no intention of moderating their position. Moderates are out- they’re determined to keep veering further and further right.

How does one do that (Win XP Home)?

To set your Thumb-Drive for quick removal:

1. Plug it in to the USB port.

2. Click: Start, then click: My Computer.

3. Right click the Thumb Drive and left click: Properties

4: Click the tab: Hardware,

5. With your thumb-drive highlighted click: Properties.

6. Click the tab: Policies;

7. Click: Optimize for quick removal, then click: OK

You can now remove this drive without using the “Safely disconnect” process. In step number 5 you can choose other devices that are plugged in for that time. It makes them safe for “hot-swapping” that is, swapping while powered on.

Dobson addresses the Council for National Policy

Council for National Policy

The Council for National Policy is a secretive forum that was formed in 1981 by Tim LaHaye as a networking tool for leading US conservative political leaders, financiers and religious right activist leaders. The group, which meets three times a year, promotes “Educational conferences for national leaders in the fields of business, government, religion and academia to explore national policy alternatives. Weekly newsletters are distributed to all members to keep them apprised of member activities and public policy issues. A semi-annual journal is produced from membership meeting speeches.

Tim LaHaye

Former fundamentalist Christian preacher and best-selling novelist Tim LaHaye is the co-author (along with Jerry Jenkins) of the twelve “Left Behind” books. LaHaye reportedly earns a minimum of ten million dollars for each installment of the popular post-apocalyptic Christian fantasy series.

Both LaHaye and his wife, Beverly LaHaye, are 1950 graduates of ultraconservative Bob Jones University. Tim LaHaye later earned a “Doctor of Ministry” degree at the Western Conservative Baptist Seminary.

In the 1988 presidential campaign, LaHaye was named national co-chair of Jack Kemp’s presidential campaign, only to be fired one week later after an article in the Baltimore Sun that LaHaye had written claiming Roman Catholicism was “a false religion.”

Founder of Blackwater Erik Prince:

He was an intern in the White House under President George H. W. Bush[9] and subsequently criticized that administration’s policies to the Grand Rapids Press, saying: “I saw a lot of things I didn’t agree with—homosexual groups being invited in, the budget agreement, the Clean Air Act, those kinds of bills.” He also served as an intern to California Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher. While at Hillsdale, Prince campaigned for presidential candidate Pat Buchanan, and interned at his father’s co-founded Gary Bauer’s Family Research Council.

Prince’s father co-founded the Family Research Council with Gary Bauer. Prince is the brother of Betsy DeVos, a former chairwoman of the Michigan Republican Party and wife of former Alticor (Amway) president and Gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos, son of Richard DeVos, Sr. (listed by Forbes in 2007 as one of the world’s richest men, with a net worth of $2.4 billion).

re: #250 Bagua

To set your Thumb-Drive for quick removal:

1. Plug it in to the USB port.

2. Click: Start, then click: My Computer.

3. Right click the Thumb Drive and left click: Properties

4: Click the tab: Hardware,

5. With your thumb-drive highlighted click: Properties.

6. Click the tab: Policies;

7. Click: Optimize for quick removal, then click: OK

You can now remove this drive without using the “Safely disconnect” process. In step number 5 you can choose other devices that are plugged in for that time. It makes them safe for “hot-swapping” that is, swapping while powered on.

Back in later.
Thanks very much!

I thought both were genius.

Scene in the gas station on “No Country” was the most uncomfortable I remember being in a movie.

Burn After Reading was the shanizzle.

I’m glad I read the book “No Country” before seeing the movie. Left me less confused than many who saw the movie.

I saw the Men Who Stare at Goats trailer today. Looks pretty good, and my father knows the guy the story’s based on.

Somebody get this to Toots for the cookbook!

Bourbon Slush recipe.

2 1/2 cups hot tea
12 oz. thawed lemonade concentrate
6 oz. thawed orang juice concentrate
2 cups bourbon (I always add more)
1 cup sugar
6 cups water.

Add sugar while tea is hot to dissolve. Let tea cool, mix all ingredients together and freeze in plastic container. Fill cup 3/4 and top with Fresca, if you don’t have Fresca then use 7-Up or Ginger Ale.

This stuff is sooo good…

No, but I should. I’m pretty sure I saw the trailer for that with the same friend I saw the last three Coen Brothers movies with. He’s a philosophy professor and he’s not sure what to make of A Serious Man. We’ll probably discuss it later this week.

For the Newbies- here’s the LGF Cookbook blog. Check it out- we’re still in need of some recipes, so if you have something that might fit the bill- send it in to Reine. Also consider picking up Volume 1. The proceeds go to charity and LGF. Thanks!

Volume 2 will have some cool garden tips from Killgore. We could use more on that too, so any green thumbs in the house should also check out the cookbook blog.

I registered a little while back. I had heard LGF mentioned before during the whole Rathergate scandal, and periodically checked in to see what the fuss was about, and found that I enjoyed the commentary. From time to time I would see links posted to or frontpaged elsewhere (namely Fark). I was lucky enough to spot open registration a month or so ago.

A bit about me I guess. Voted R in 2000, 2004, voted D for the first time last year. Socially liberal, but a bit on the fiscal side regarding gov’t spending and initiatives (I know, how trendy.) Actively serving in the US military in a collection/interpretation & analysis function, used to fix airplanes before that.

Recently, I seem to be a bit disillusioned politically. Leaning more toward right leaning (I) rather than calling myself a conservative. Over the last few years, I just got a bit fed up with the social conservatives and neocons driving the Republican agenda, and deeming anyone who didn’t agree with their position as a traitor or calling them un-American, while trying to repress any civil debate with personal rhetoric and smear tactics. Not really buying what the Left is selling at bargain discounts at other’s expense these days either.

So far, I am liking what I read here daily. An emphasis seems to be placed on integrity, with facts & evidence presented driving the basis of a debate, rather than pure emotion or reactionary thoughts. I’m mostly a lurker, but plan on popping in from time to time.

/I bid you fellow Lizards a good night and good morning.
