Hi all,
I thought I would use this Ocean (Open) thread to put a question out. I noticed that there are some people trained in the noble science of physics here.

I read this in a popular science magazine many years ago and my knowledge of physics has not allowed me to find the answer. So it is still bugging me.
Yes, I know, I have no life.

A spring is tied shut with acid-resistant bands. The whole package is submerged in a bath of acid that dissolves the spring. After one day the spring is completely gone. Question: Where did the energy stored in the spring go?

I know enough physics to think it must be converted to heat in some fashion. But how? Or is this a really simple question for anyone but ignorant me?

I think it's the going rate for metal by the pound plus usable components (frame, trucks, carbody, etc). Turth be told, it's not an aspect I follow that closely. I think alot of the new 'green' genset locomotives actually have trucks and frames from units that were scrapped...the guts and carbody would be all new.

There are a lot of people on the Internet who have disappointed me. I think one thing that doesn't help is that one almost never has to admit one's wrong on the Internet; there are always sites that provide one extremist viewpoint or another, complete with a host of fabricated evidence or articles that flat-out lie. It's very easy to fall into conspiracy theory and become more hateful.

Speaking of which...

It's just come to my attention, amidst all the manufactured uproar over the art selections for the White House, that one of the artists whose work was selected is:

- Black

- Openly gay

- Still living.

Somehow, this confluence of evil has escaped the notice of the Art Police. Expect to see something like the following at Malkin's site shortly:

"Teh ghey! Teh ghey! It's in the White House!!!"

With pictures of a black person prominently displayed. Torches and pitchforks optional, but suggested.

A Libyan man set off a small bomb while trying to enter an army barracks in Milan on Monday, seriously injuring himself and slightly wounding the guard who stopped him, Italian law enforcement officials said.

SNIP

Authorities said the man appeared to be acting alone, and Affini denied initial media reports that the man had shouted "Out of Afghanistan!" He said the man had shouted something in Arabic, but that it was not clear what.

Some of the 2,800 troops that Italy has deployed in Afghanistan are based in the army barracks that was targeted, Affini said.

A Saudi court has sentenced a man to five years in jail and 1,000 lashes for boasting about his sexual exploits on television, in a case that has divided public opinion in the conservative Islamic kingdom.

Abdul-Jawad, a divorced father of four, was arrested in August after discussing his premarital sexual encounters, showing off his pick-up techniques and displaying some sex toys and lubricants on a Lebanese TV program.

SNIP

A court official said that, on top of the lashings and jail sentence, Abdul-Jawad's phone and car would be confiscated and he would be banned from traveling after completing his term.

You've lost that hoping feeling...

An internal document circulated among members of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas's political party says all hopes placed in the Obama administration "have evaporated" because of alleged White House backtracking on key issues to the Palestinians.

The Fatah Party memorandum, obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press, accuses the United States of backing off from its demands that Israel freeze settlement construction and failing to set a clear agenda for new Mideast peace talks.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the Oct. 12 document reflected Abbas's own views or was intended to be leaked as Fatah's attempt to pressure President Barack Obama to bear down harder on Israel.

We're flying from Tel Aviv to Philadelphia, then from Philadelphia to Detroit with just enough time to pick up our baggage, go through customs, re-check our bags and get the connecting flight. That's assuming the flight from Israel is ON TIME.

I have this thing about getting to the airport really early, ever since I missed a flight out of La Guardia and the fecking airline would not rebook our ticket for less than $600, so we ended up renting a car to drive home.

There's not the same excitement to ending a vacation as there is starting it, but I'm still looking forward to my own bed, my own shower, my own kitchen.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, also said the counterinsurgency strategy pursued by McChrystal is "really critical." She said the American people don't have the stomach to stay in Afghanistan for another 10 years, but that the mission there is in "serious jeopardy" and Obama has an obligation to follow his commander's advice.

He took a second one after an hour and the next thing he knew the flight attendant was violently shaking him telling him he had to get up and off the plane!

Oh shoot! I had an epiphany of sorts going back to CNN fact-checking the 0bama skit.

Last year, Tina Fey's impersonation of Sarah Palin was supposedly dead-on and hilarious. I think CNN aired some highlights to prove their point.

One year later, CNN is fact-checking an 0bama skit and round up all kinds of beltway talking heads to reassure those of us that hadn't seen it that 'It wasn't really that funny'...

Here's what Best of the Web had to say about Wolf Blitzer's fact checking SNL:

Fact-Check This, Wolf!
"CNN has become the butt of a running joke meme on Twitter for its lame fact-check criticism of the Saturday Night Live skit which lampooned President Obama for making too many promises that he has yet to keep," reports blogger D.K. Jamaal. Here are some examples:

@DefiantKembro 'El Nino' is not Spanish for "the Nino" #CNNFactCheck
@EnasYorl "Wayne's World" was not really a public access cable show. #CNNfactcheck
@ArielAkiva The superfans were not actually having heart attacks. #cnnfactcheck
@thecomeback After checking every river in America, we have not been able to find a motivational speaker living in a van. #CNNfactcheck
@jeffdobbs: Over half of Saturday Night Live is NOT ON SATURDAY NIGHT for Eastern time zone. Outrage. #CNNFactCheck
@jkfecke In fact, Blue Öyster Cult never included a cowbell player named Gene Frenkle--the musician didn't exist. #CNNFactCheck
@mikehassinger: This just in: "Toonces the driving cat" not real cat, can't even DRIVE! #CNNFactCheck
We noted the CNN/PolitiFact.com "fact check" yesterday, but this latest development has us nervous. We have it on good authority that not everything on Twitter is true. Who will fact-check the fact-checkers of the fact-checkers?

223 albusteve  Tue, Oct 13, 2009 5:33:06am

And in a public and videotaped panel in 2008, Lloyd called Hugo Chavez’s government the result of “really an incredible revolution…a democratic revolution.” As a result of his triumph, Lloyd argued that “the property owners and the folks who were then controlling the media rebelled,” with the result that Chavez and his cadre had to move and close their media outlets down. Then he said the US sought to oust him, but Chavez came back stronger than ever, “and had another revolution,” and then “started to take the media very seriously in his country.” Viewing Chavez’s totalitarian actions favorably, Lloyd implied that opponents of the right-wing media should do the same here.

Seven-Year-Old Ohio Boy Tackled by Deer While Playing Football

WINTERSVILLE, Ohio — A 7-year-old Ohio boy playing a game of backyard football was tackled by a deer.

Brandon Hiles says he encountered the charger — and not the kind from San Diego — when the ball rolled into woods while he was playing with friends Saturday in Wintersville, about 125 miles east of Columbus. The boy says the buck ran at him and flipped him with its horns, leaving bruises and a gash.

A 9-year-old pal, Wyatt Pugh (pyoo), beat the deer with a stick to make it go away.

Wintersville Police Officer Art Fowler Jr. says there were actually two bucks in the area gearing for a fight, and Brandon was attacked when he inadvertently got between them.

Good News/Bad News this week:

Bad News: A young (17) lady needing a heart/lung transplant got word that they were going to take her down to the OR Sunday night - it was time! Lots of excitement, as you can imagine. But they brought her back just a couple of hours later. The team bringing the organs in said that they were having problems with the lung, and the surgeon called it off. :(

Good News: The heart was PERFECT, and someone else got it. Whomever that is, hopefully they will do well!

For one of Big Labor's biggest players -- the SEIU, whose members are mostly health-care workers -- it was a dream come true. A vast influx of government money -- and with it, government influence -- to private hospitals would create jobs for many SEIU locals and give a major leg up in organizing many "shops" that are now non-union.

but then...

The tax hits especially hard at unionized contract employees -- construction workers, musicians, etc. -- who change employers often, and so often buy insurance through their union. The "Cadillac" tax falls first on the insurance providers -- so these "self-insured" unions would actually take the hit.

looks like the Baucus bill has some problems with financing...could be interesting

Bill Whittle:

When the subject of Obama as a “peacemaker” comes up, people like Mary seem to think that the answer is to be nice and talk to people and the problem will go away. This is known as “mirroring,” and it is the blind spot that most people bring to negotiations — the idea that our opponents want the same things we do. In Afghanistan we are dealing with an enemy who insists on praying to Allah multiple times a day, who believes that women are subhuman, that homosexuals be killed on sight (preferably by crushing them under falling walls — look it up) and that any criticism of Allah, his Prophet (PBOH) or his clerics is punishable by beating or death. That is their IRREDUCIBLE CORE BELIEF SYSTEM and for that they are willing to die. We, on the other hand, believe in fundamental human dignity for all, the right to worship or not as we see fit, the right of women and homosexuals to live lives as equal members of society, and the fundamental right to say whatever we damn well choose. Those in turn are OUR IRREDUCIBLE CORE BELIEF SYSTEMS for which SOME of us are willing to fight and die.

'Embarrassing' Incident in Gulf of Suez
German Ship Transporting Arms for Iran

US troops boarded a German-owned freighter in early October and found eight containers full of ammunition, allegedly headed to Syria from Iran. The shipment is in violation of a UN weapons embargo and has become a source of chagrin in Berlin.

An "embarrassing affair," is how one German diplomat described it. The official could also have added: potentially damaging to trans-Atlantic relations.

In an operation reported on by SPIEGEL over the weekend, US soldiers entered the freighter Hansa India in the Gulf of Suez at the beginning of October and discovered seven containers full of 7.62 millimeter ammunition suitable for Kalashnikov rifles. An eighth container was full of cartridges suitable for the manufacture of additional rounds. The incident is particularly awkward for Berlin as the Hansa India is registered to the Hamburg-based shipping company Leonhardt & Blumberg.

Additionally, the CBO predicted that if health care costs for employers decrease, companies would use the savings to increase wages and drive up taxable income in the country. The additional taxes on those wages would add $13 billion to the Treasury.

interesting...the favorable report last week by the CBO with regard to the costs of the Baucus bill was touted by the donks...so now how can they dismiss this little thing about tort reform?

Polemarchus: Well, you must either prove stronger than we are, or you will have to stay here.

Socrates: Isn’t there another alternative, namely, that we persuade you to let us go?

Polemarchus: But could you persuade us, if we won’t listen?

Glaucon: Certainly not

I thought that was, actually, pretty good. Don't know about the link tho.

ACORN became skilled at moral gangsterism, shaking down governments and corporations for larger and larger amounts, making ever more ridiculous demands. (A former worker said on the show she became disillusioned when she realized ACORN was asking Sherwin-Williams for $1 billion as reparations for having manufactured lead-based paint. The money, of course, would go into ACORN's coffers.)

Baird threatens 'no' vote on health bill if not given 72 hours to read it

One House Democrat is threatening to vote against his party's health reform bills if lawmakers are not given adequate time to read the bill.

Rep. Brian Baird (D-Wash.), one of the Democrats to sign onto an effort to require a 72-hour window for a bill to be posted online before a vote in Congress, said he might vote against a healthcare reform bill if that principle is not honored.

Baird told the Lewis County Chronicle that he would "absolutely" consider voting against a health bill if lawmakers are not afforded a 72 hour window.

It's official. Whiners indeed.

The Obama administration really needs to get over itself.

First, the president and his aides go to war with Fox News because the network maintains a generally anti-Obama slant.

Then, an anonymous administration aide attacks bloggers for failing to maintain a sufficiently pro-Obama slant.

These are not disconnected developments.

2. Presidents are supposed to rise above their own partisanship and engage with a wide range of media -- even outlets that are hard on their administrations.

In fact, presidents should go out of their way to accept invites from media that can be expected to poke, prod and pester them. The willingness to take the hits suggests that a commander-in-chief is not afraid to engage with his critics. It also reminds presidents, who tend to be cloistered, that there are a lot of Americans who get their information from sources that do not buy what the White House press office is selling.

Interesting problem. However the answers given are not the whole story, IMHO.

The band holding the spring is itself a spring. When the spring disappears, the band will contract releasing its heat energy. That is easier to imagine if we visualize the band as not completely compressing the spring, so we can clearly imagine it compressing when the spring is gone.

What the ratios between the two materials are I don't know for sure, but in principle I would guess that it should be 50/50

Baltimore Schools Embrace Anti-Meat Movement with ‘Meatless Mondays’

The first graders lining up for lunch at Arlington Elementary School in Baltimore, Md., on Monday could pick a cheese sandwich or cheese lasagna and a bowl of mixed vegetables or broccoli. They could not, however, have meat for lunch now that cafeterias throughout the school district have adopted "Meatless Mondays."

Mellissa Mahoney, a chef and dietitian with the school district, said the idea started as part of a themed-approach to planning lunches for the school year. She said the plan changed after representatives from the Meatless Monday movement approached Mahoney and Food Services Director Tony Geraci.

“They met with us over the summer, before we even launched the new menu,” Mahoney told CNSNews.com. She said at first they didn’t realize that Meatless Monday is a national and international movement with ties to extreme animal rights activists. “We know now what they do, and we have collaborated with them,” Mahoney said.

The people promoting the Meatless Monday movement range from former Beatle Paul McCartney to liberal commentators and the Johns Hopkins Center for A Livable Future.

Dollar Reaches Breaking Point as Banks Shift Reserves

Oct. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Central banks flush with record reserves are increasingly snubbing dollars in favor of euros and yen, further pressuring the greenback after its biggest two- quarter rout in almost two decades.

Policy makers boosted foreign currency holdings by $413 billion last quarter, the most since at least 2003, to $7.3 trillion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Nations reporting currency breakdowns put 63 percent of the new cash into euros and yen in April, May and June, the latest Barclays Capital data show. That’s the highest percentage in any quarter with more than an $80 billion increase.

World leaders are acting on threats to dump the dollar while the Obama administration shows a willingness to tolerate a weaker currency in an effort to boost exports and the economy as long as it doesn’t drive away the nation’s creditors. The diversification signals that the currency won’t rebound anytime soon after losing 10.3 percent on a trade-weighted basis the past six months, the biggest drop since 1991.

“Global central banks are getting more serious about diversification, whereas in the past they used to just talk about it,” said Steven Englander, a former Federal Reserve researcher who is now the chief U.S. currency strategist at Barclays in New York. “It looks like they are really backing away from the dollar.”

Palestinians say hopes in Obama 'evaporated'

JERUSALEM — The Palestinian president's political party says all hopes in the Obama administration have "evaporated," accusing the White House of caving in to pressure from the pro-Israel lobby and backing off a demand to freeze Jewish settlement.

Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah Party also accused the U.S. of failing to set a clear agenda for a new round of Mideast peace talks, according to an internal memo obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday.

"All hopes placed in the new U.S. administration and President Obama have evaporated," the document said. Obama "couldn't withstand the pressure of the Zionist lobby, which led to a retreat from his previous positions on halting settlement construction and defining an agenda for the negotiations and peace."

Whine, whine, whine...

Some would argue that vegetarianism/veganism is not a belief system per se, merely a life-style choice.

Either way, it's a personal decision and not something that should be taught in classrooms, except in a discussion about dietary needs. In such a case, it could be presented realistically, with its attendant deficiencies (lack of animal protein).

Obama Attempts To Delay Iranian Sanctions Bill

Legislators are growing increasingly frustrated with President Barack Obama's seeming unwillingness to pull the trigger on an Iran sanctions package that is already locked and loaded. The American public should be frustrated, too.

The Iran Refined Petroleum Sanctions Act (IRPSA), if enacted, would put the squeeze on foreign oil companies that currently help the Mullahs refine petroleum, as well as the insurance companies that underwrite this trade. If the sanctions work, they could stem the flow of 30 to 40 percent of Iranian oil, since the Mullahs don't actually have sufficient refining capacity to meet their domestic needs. In short, IRPSA could deal a fiscal body blow to Iran and destabilize the regime, as a means to derail its nuclear ambitions.

So, why are Democrats like Senators Chuck Schumer (NY) and Chris Dodd (CT) unhappy? The same reason why Republicans are...

...The problem, according to congressional staffers and think tankers who have been following the legislation, is that Obama appears ambivalent – caught somewhere between his call for dialogue and insisting that an Iranian nuclear weapon is "unacceptable..."

I went into our local hospital on Wednesday at noon, and six hours later found myself in the ICU. I stayed there one night, and had a second in a private room. I had a number of meals during my stay.

Here's the thing:

My surgeon, an old golfing pal, is one terrific doctor. Probably the best vascular surgeon in the state. To the administration: Will he have a practice after the health care legislation is passed? Sure hope so; he saved my life, and says he'd like to save a helluva lot more before he's done.

The hospital folks - from RN's to CNA's - were wonderful. The hospital itself is only a year old, and every room is a private room. The food service is contracted, and each patient gets a menu and can order any time during the day or night. And, they call up if you don't order, to make sure you don't miss out. Oh yeah, the public comes to the hospital to eat in the dining room, because the food is absolutely terrific. To the administration: Will my hospital still be here after the health care legislation is passed? Sure hope so, because it's not only a major employer here, but is a real model for how a hospital should be run.

Finally, to the administration: If the proposed health care legislation had been passed before I had this procedure, would I have been able to have it? I'm 59, have private health insurance. Would my health insurance have been one of those policies you define as "gold plated"? Would I have lost it as you taxed it out of existence? And the big question: Would I still have the ability to have this procedure under the "public option" that will have replaced my insurance?

If your answer to any of the questions above is "no", please take your proposed health care legislation and shove it up your...

You have more negative karma than posts made. Wow. What have you been doing to piss people off so?

I pitched an idea for a company once for an anti-social, social network. Instead of friends lists you had enemies lists modeled after F***dcompany.com. It was a way to disclose your hates and dislikes. My friend said that the person who had the most likes and dislikes at the same time cwould be featured as the anti-christ.

It didn't get funded at the height of the social networking bubble because of the legal ramifications of the business model.

Slightly off-topic but not exactly - Have you seen the Celebrity Jeopardy clip with Wolf Blitzer going deeper and deeper into the hole, getting his ass destroyed by Andy-what's-his-name-Conan's-old-sidekick?

Wolf actually looks like a SNL skit of Celebrity Jeopardy in that one. I doubt CNN will fact-check it though.

I kept waiting for Wolf for fall back to Sean Connery's answer on SNL, of Your Momma Alex, but it never came

From Yahoo Answers:

Girlfriend found weird vids I made?

Before going out with my girlfriend I was kind of obsessed with her. I took pictures I had of her and scanned them into a japanese program that creates a 3d model of her which you can then ummm... have your way with. Ahem.

I made about 50 different videos with this software, most of them were of her making love and performing oral sex on a 3d model of myself, and sometimes multiple versions of me. Others involved machines...you get the idea.

I eventually worked up the courage to talk to her and we ended up hitting it off and are now a couple, the problem is that she used my computer and ended up finding the vids even though they were buried inside multiple folders. Of course she was pretty freaked out, especially since the titles of the vids were needlessly crude on my part. She said she had to leave and needs some time alone.
If the program had options for making cuddling on the couch and walking through a park while holding hands videos there would have been far more of those, I hope she doesnt think that I view her as some kind of sexual object because I truly do love her

How can I smooth this over with her?

WTF?

Hi Dark! I'm still a little groggy from the general, LOL! I probably wasn't as clear as I should have been. The three questions I was referring to were:

On my doctor:
Will he have a practice after the health care legislation is passed?

On our hospital:
Will my hospital still be here after the health care legislation is passed?

On my procedure:
Would I still have the ability to have this procedure under the "public option" that will have replaced my insurance?

That's why I wrote "if the answer to any is no",

Top 10: Hottest Historical Women

During Women’s History Month, we’d like to celebrate an aspect of historical females often overlooked by historians: their hotness. Powerful women throughout history have used their beauty as well as their intelligence to get ahead. It’s something successful modern women continue to do today. Here we will explore the history of hot and resourceful women and celebrate them the best way we know how: with a top 10 list.

The women on our list are ranked not only by beauty, but their historical significance and their effect on the men of their time. To be considered, they have to be dead and mentioned in history classes. We’ve excluded entertainers because there are already too many of those lists. Besides, we didn’t need them. Our list is political, royal, literary, and stands up to any celebrity list on the sexy scale.

Good point. Also, the Army always does a training session like that before they allow someone to fire one of their rifles. By reading their spin on the law with all the distortions, no one would vote for the bill.

And it could happen here.

Indeed.

Which is why the example of Nazi Germany should be a warning to all, including us, about the attractiveness of evil. The pagentry, the displays, the patriotism, the glamor, the idealism, they're all designed to make an evil and destructive ideology easier to swallow. It roots itself in different ways for different societies; tailors itself for them.

In Germany, it was Naziism. In Chile, it was Pinochet. In Cambodia, it was the Khumer Rouge. And what of us? What might it spring from? Personally, I'd keep my eye on folks like Buchanan and Paul, the far right fringe that seems so en vogue right now. People who claim to love the Constitution but would be willing to trash it in a nanosecond. That's who I'd watch.

HI Semper Fi! Yes sir, it is. We live up in the Hill Country, and what the heck, I'll give myself away. The hospital is Peterson Hospital in Kerrville. It's a year old, and is built next to the Peterson Regional Ambulatory Care Center. Most folks have everything done at the ACC, which is a really pleasant place. And the hospital is terrific as well.

Texans have definitely got something very nice going on with respect to hospitals. Let me clarify. I've had good experiences with hospitals in Burbank, CA; Thousand Oaks, CA; but, you have just validated the outstanding stories I've heard about Texas. Enviable.

Last one...

After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for Social Security. The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver's license to verify my age. I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home. I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have to go home and come back later..

The woman said, 'Unbutton your shirt.'

So I opened my shirt, revealing my curly silver hair. She said, 'That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me,' and she processed my Social Security application.

When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the Social Security office. She said, 'You should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten disability, too . . '

.. . . and that's how the fight started.
