I've related my frustration with this situation before. Briefly, I went looking for vaccination for both ordinary and H1N1 flu this year, for the first time, since I'm in a high risk group and got tired of hearing my doctor bitch about my usual shirking of this exercise every year.
I was told that our county has run out of ordinary vaccine - because all resources had been diverted to producing H1N1 vaccine, leaving supplies of the regular stuff short. They're completely out, and no more will be available. Period.
Meanwhile, there's no H1N1 vaccine to be had, either, because it hasn't become available yet.
Plus, I've been told (unconfirmed, as of yet) that I have to have the ordinary flu shot before I can get the H1N1 shot - an impossibility, since neither is available.
Welcome to the gigantic clusterfuck that is Federally-run health care. Meanwhile, the government keeps drumming up increasing hysteria over this year's flu season, just to add to the confusion and near-panic they've already managed to create.
My county health department is recommending that I wash my hands a lot and not sneeze on anybody. Sort of like what they tried with the Black Death during the Middle Ages, when people wore masks containing sweet-scented herbs to ward off the disease.
I'll put down a hundred bucks right now on the bet that my Congressional representatives have all received both flu shots, free of charge, without spending so much as a minute in a waiting room.

Well, that's something. I'll see what my county HD has to say this week. As I understand it, kids are at higher risk than adults, so I'm happy to forego my shots for them. Like TheMatrix31, I've consistently blown off my flu shots for years, and only got inspired this year because of the increased attention and to poke the anti-vaxers in the eye with a sharp stick. I'm astonished at what a mess things are in this year - in the past, you couldn't go anywhere without someone waving a needle in your face at the drugstore, grocery store, bank and everywhere else, plus all the usual county health department clinics and temporary clinics. This year - the first year that I can remember when the shots may actually matter - zip.
Government planning at it's finest.

No; sometimes, though, us ordinary mortals can sneak in a downding during a troll post's fleeting lifespan.

I'm pretty sure the swine flu targets normal adults, rather than the regular flu which leaves kids/elderly more vulnerable.
Could be wrong though.

Dear Doctor Lizard...
I'm debating whether or not to get the flu shot.
My job takes into people's homes. Generally three a day. Elderly, people with kids, etc...
Would the shot keep me from being a carrier of the virus. Wouldn't want to get someone else sick even if I didn't come down with it myself.
I also don't want to grow a little pig tail either.
Thoughts?

The latest news from Sweden is more controversy over the newspaper (well, tabloid really) Aftonbladet, previously criticized over publishing at best unverified idiocy, at worst an anti-semitic screed (Here's a summary of that episode), publishing an article by Sweden Democrats leader Jimmie Åkesson.
The original article can be found here (in Swedish). There's an article on The Local about it. I couldn't find a translation of the whole thing, so I made my own translation (apologies for any mistakes, I'm not a professional).
In a follow-up article (in Swedish), his statements are examined and skewered, to which he responded "it was a bit sloppy" (referring to his own article). He responds further to criticism by repeating "There is almost no information available, but in the name of reason one can assume it's correct", cementing the level of intellectual honesty he represents.
He writes that no one would have guessed that Islam would be Sweden's second largest religion 20 years ago, even though it was at the time. When this is pointed out, he replies "It's entirely possible you're right about that, I haven't even bothered to check it".
"How can you say that fundamentalism is increasing, or that Malmö will have a muslim majority when even the experts can't?"
"Of course you can't say we're going to have an increase, it's obvious that it's hard to make population estimates, but if the development continues I'm fully convinced that it may happen. There could also be a majority of polar bears too, purely hypothetically".
SD is currently polling at around 4.7 percent of the vote (4 percent is the limit on entering parliament). There is a current debate suggesting that our 7 seated parties are willing to work across bloc politics rather than put SD in a position as the tie-breaker.
On a personal note, translating the run-on sentence at line 13 made me want to hurt something.

Cops: NY woman arrives drunk to pick up DWI friend
Mon Oct 19, 6:22 pm ET
LAFAYETTE, N.Y. – Troopers have charged a 22-year-old upstate New York woman with aggravated driving while intoxicated after she showed up drunk at the state police barracks to give a ride to a friend who had been arrested earlier for DWI. Troopers said Stacy Kolinski had a blood alcohol level of .20 percent — more than double the legal limit — when she arrived at the Lafayette barracks 10 miles south of Syracuse around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
Kolinski came to the barracks to give a ride to 34-year-old George Reddick who was stopped for speeding earlier Sunday morning and charged with DWI and misdemeanor criminal possession of cocaine.
Reddick and Kolinski were both issued tickets to appear in town court at a later date. Troopers said they don't know if they have lawyers.

I always get all misty-eyed when I see the commercials for the ASPCA on TV. I find it hard to imagine a mindset where someone would willingly abuse, injure, or even kill an animal (well, aside from putting them down, that's a bit different). Yes, my cats get on my nerves a lot, but I'd never hurt them over it - even the one cat I'm planning on getting rid of, we're giving her away to a good home.

I had a mouse in the house once. I found out because, naturally, the cats went rocketing after it to play. Only thing is, that's all they wanted to do: Play. It slowly teased the cats across the floor, gaining valuable inches as they idly batted at it, until it disappeared through a return vent in the floor and dropped into the basement. My cat turned and looked up at me like, "Well? Are you going to go down there and bring it back?"

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together...

We miss each and every one of the 5 cats we have had in our home over 25 years. We found some mixed blessing comfort in one fact-Our beloved pets are short lived. This always hurts to the bone. One particularly sad day I realized if cat #1, "patches" had been long lived like us people, we would have missed out of the wonderful full fun lives of the ones that we got or rescued later. We would have missed out on several fine feline lives. It hurts, but that's okay too.

What do you make of this?
Sir Christopher Monckton: Copenhagen treaty eviscerates U.S. sovereignity
Sir Christopher Monckton is a global warming skeptic. Former Vice President and Nobel Prize winner Al Gore has for years refused to accept Monckton's repeated challenge to a public debate on global warming.
He's also a very close reader of the proposed UN Climate Change Treaty President Obama is expected to sign along with other world leaders in Copenhagen in a few weeks. Monckton says that 200-page treaty cedes U.S. sovereignity to the UN, mandates a massive transfer of wealth from the U.S. and Europe to pay our "Climate Debt" to the Third World, and creates a new enforcement mechanism to make it all happen.
Is Monckton right? I don't know because I haven't yet read the treaty (But I soon will be). Here's his warning about the Copenhagen Treaty, and here's the draft text of the treaty. Judge for yourself.

re: #270 NJDhockeyfan
There have been a number of articles in the National Post about the up-coming Copenhagen meeting...I suppose one can state that even if one is not a "climate skeptic", that does not "solve" the related policy matter of "What do you do about Global Warming?" The latter may be more problematic than the former.

I think the issue is this part:
Monckton says that 200-page treaty cedes U.S. sovereignity to the UN, mandates a massive transfer of wealth from the U.S. and Europe to pay our "Climate Debt" to the Third World, and creates a new enforcement mechanism to make it all happen.

What's the subhead on that Journal article?
"FBI Arrests U.S. Government Physicist in Sting Operation Involving Nuclear Secrets"
See, a "sting" is a term of art in law enforcement, and refers to instances in which the authorities pretend to be parties engaged in criminal activity in order to persuade or induce others similarly disposed to show themselves wiling to engage in criminality, at which point they are arrested.
Maybe the article didn't make it perfectly clear, but the FBI agents were not Israelis.

Yeah, the hard drives thing is a bit weird, but then again, I'm known to walk around with flash drives that later can't be found. Given the nature of his work, it's definitely troubling, and certainly enough to bring him to the attention of the Feds.

I don't know much about this particular issue, but it's probably just a scare tactic. The Constitution forbids ceding sovereignty (whatever that means) and in any event it won't be anything not done before with large agreements like NPT or GATT.

The FBI agents called him pretending to be Israelis.
Given that
1) He'd worked for an Israeli government enterprise; and
2) Of any nation soliciting espionage, Israel would be among the least objectionable
it's not surprising that they'd say they were Israelis. Their chances of success would have been vanishingly small were they to represent themselves as, say, Italians, South African Boers, or what-have-you.

My suspicion is that this guy was operating as somewhat of a lone wolf. "Oh, hey, I want to make myself look important, why don't I just nab some information that my former employers might want and sneak it over to them." That doesn't make him an Israeli spy, it makes him an idiot who tried to sell secrets to the Israelis. Now if it turns out Israel actually paid him to conduct espionage, that's a different matter altogether; but considering the reasonably good working relationship our countries have, I doubt they'd torpedo that for some high-level military secrets they probably already have anyway.

Knew a fellow who was an ASW guy (a scope dope, as they were called). Told me a story about a fellow in his unit who walked off with a set of manuals and such for some new Buck Rogers magnetometer system for tracking Soviet subs - still in development, so he was testing the thing.
Anywho, traitor squid shows up at Soviet consulate in San Fran and never gets past the gate. Guard at the gate picked up the phone and called the FBI as soon as this guy said why he was there. "I've got something that you might be interested in" was enough for cagey old Ivan there.
Evidently, that sorta thing happened with some frequency - a jackass would just show up at a Soviet consul's office with some nugget or other of intel, never get past the gate, and then get to tell his story to J. Edgar's boys. Evidently the Soviets never trusted anybody who showed up like that - always assumed it was a trick, that the intel was old or bad, and, frankly, not worth the kinda heat it would be likely to bring down on them.

Ya know, I think he sold some bit of crypto kit to them. A thing like that would be easy enough to confirm in its value; manuals and such for a magnetometer, less so.
It's like when Lee Oswald defected to the Soviets - they assumed as a matter of course that he was a phoney defector - the information he was giving about the U-2 couldn't possibly be correct - the altitude seemed impossibly high. Later on, they pegged him as a nutter.

China does not want to arm its civilian crews, since said arms might later be used against its tyrannical government. Still, I think the pirates have hijacked the wrong ship. The Chinese execute pirates, and I hope they execute every one of these pirates.

Pulled a few counter examples from wiki, looks like the Soviets would accept walk ins, at least some of the time:

Joe thinks he's spying for Israel, but his controller's a Russian who's free-lancing for the Syrians. The very nature of the biz makes this kind of thing unavoidable and unknowable. -you controller or contact is not likely to show you his credentials, and, unless you're really dumb, you'll never contact the embassy, consulate, or anything else in any way connected with the nation for whose benefit you're spying.

NYT:
As the Commander in Chief Deliberates, Frustration Builds Within the Ranks
WASHINGTON — Only nine months ago, the Pentagon pronounced itself reassured by the early steps of a new commander in chief. President Obama was moving slowly on an American withdrawal from Iraq, had retained former President George W. Bush’s defense secretary and, in a gesture much noticed, had executed his first military salute with crisp precision.
But now, after nearly a month of deliberations by Mr. Obama over whether to send more American troops to Afghanistan, frustrations and anxiety are on the rise within the military.
A number of active duty and retired senior officers say there is concern that the president is moving too slowly, is revisiting a war strategy he announced in March and is unduly influenced by political advisers in the Situation Room.

Screw that? Ya think a Chief Executive is like a plumber or something? You misunderstand the nature of the thing if that's what you expect.
Look at Carter - that was one busy guy - had his fingers in a million pies, and didn't get a whole lot of anything done because he was too busy doing things.
'sides, what exactly would you have him do? Give yet another speech on something? Hold yet another conference with yet another group of people in his admin? Maybe he should suit up and go into battle in Afghanistan?

Do Presidents fill out a timesheet each week?
I find it hard to believe that any President is ever on vacation while in office. Like the leader of the free world has to be in the oval office to do his job. This isn't a defense of any one President - but a reminder that everywhere they go (and the vehicles they travel in) provide secure, mobile, work environments.

Veteran White House correspondent Helen Thomas, who has covered every president since Jack Kennedy, advised the White House to abandon their attacks on Fox News today. She attributed the administration's visceral reaction to the cable outlet to a naive sense of invincibility generally held by new presidents (video embedded below the fold).
Asked by Joe Scarborough of MSNBC's 'Morning Joe' what "we want our president to know and do," in reference to the title of her new book, Thomas immediately replied "stay out of these fights... They can only take you down. You can't kill the messenger."
Thomas's coauthor, CQ reporter Craig Crawford, added that "presidents are better off, Joe, when they punch up and not down."

I've always thought that we expect too much of the President, and that's why they all end up wasting so much time and effort in order to be seen doing something. Look at Jack Welsh, CEO of GE. That's not what the term "straw man" is normally used for. A straw man is a faked up argument you create by putting words in the mouth of your opponent, which you can easily refute. It's a tactic sometimes used by people who can't refute their opponent's actual statements.

I'd agree with that. I just in general prefer parliamentary systems like the UK's and Canada's. The leader is located where they can actually do something to implement their campaign promises, and they can be attacked and defend their policies on a regular basis.

Some of us have issues with the president, period. And yes, considering the job numbers (or lack there of) and the Afghan situation to name a few, there is more important things than campaigning. He hasn't stopped campaigning since 2007.

You could post your friend's paper with attribution - not necessarily by name, but by general credentials, and making clear that it's not your own work or position. If you put it in quote blocks, it will be visually clear that they aren't your words. (If it's long, you'll need to divide it and post it in sections.)
Or if your friend has someplace else online to post it, you could then link to that posting.

The greatest presidents were great leaders. What kind of leader do we have today?
Haven't had a decent executive for a long time now. Reagan was good at it - great in fact, becuase he had a team of advisors and such who were sharper, smarter, better informed than he was, and loyal to a fault. Clinton got the hang of it (so to speak) by his second term. W was good at delegation, true enough, but lacked for loyal henchmen.

Iran court jails U.S.-Iranian scholar: report
TEHRAN (Reuters) - A court has sentenced Iranian-American scholar Kian Tajbakhsh, who was detained after Iran's disputed June election, to more than 12 years in jail, the official IRNA news agency reported on Tuesday.
"The only thing I can say is that (the jail sentence) was more than 12 years," lawyer Houshang Azhari told IRNA. Azhari, who did not give further details, said the sentence would be appealed.
The verdict looked certain to anger the United States, which is seeking to engage the Islamic Republic in direct talks to resolve a long-running row over Tehran's disputed nuclear ambitions.

I liked this one too
There’s only one thing dumber than picking a fight with people who buy ink by the barrel -- picking a fight with people who don’t even have to buy ink. The Obama administration’s war on Fox News is dumb on multiple levels. It makes the White House look weak, unable to take Harry Truman’s advice and just deal with the heat. It makes the White House look small, dragged down to the level of Glenn Beck. It makes the White House look childish and petty at best, and it has a distinct Nixonian -- Agnewesque? -- aroma at worst. It is a self-defeating trifecta: it distracts attention from the Obama administration’s substantive message; it serves to help Fox, not punish it, by driving up ratings; and it deprives the White House, to the extent it refuses to provide administration officials to appear on the cable network, of access to an audience that is, in fact, broader than hard-core Obama haters.

Ray Nagin Visits Cuba to Learn About Disaster Preparedness
New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin is on a field trip to Cuba, on a State Department sanctioned expedition, in order to learn about disaster preparedness.
One might think that after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Ray Nagin would know just about all there is to know about how to prepare for a hurricane. Trial by fire, as they say. However, it seems as if Mayor Nagin believes he can learn something from Cuba.

'Cool' car rules could affect radios, phones
Washington -- California's latest requirement for the auto industry -- advanced window glazing to keep vehicles cooler -- could prevent drivers from making phone calls, listening to satellite radio or using garage door openers.
It also could lead Chrysler Group LLC to stop selling its soft-top convertible Jeep Wrangler in the Golden State. The standard for sunroofs is so tough that automakers warn the glass would have to be "effectively black."
The California Air Resources Board has adopted a new "Cool Cars" regulation ordering advanced glazing of windows to block the sun's heat and reduce the need for air conditioning. Windows must be coated with microscopic specks of metal oxide to reflect sunlight.

They won't work something out with you? Or can they suddenly get a lot more money if they give you the boot? I don't understand this stuff.
Local business (bar-grill) went under at the beginning of the year because the landlord decided to double the rent at the end of their lease - in the midst of a recession. Like anyone can suddenly make double rent. So now the space has been empty since January 1 and is becoming an eyesore and a break-in magnet. No new tenant in sight. That was in Baltimore, where I thankfully no longer reside.

I've assumed in the these situations its a last ditch thing. Either the landlord gets double the rent, or they go under. If they lose the tenant... well, they were gonna lose that rent either way.

Who screws an old tenant without having a new one nailed down?
One unit next to mine has been vacant for well over a year. The other one is now on their third tenant since I've been here. Not only that but he just moved in and is still moving stuff from the apartment he moved from in our building. So no, they don't have anything lined up at all. Not only that but they're going to have to remodel my place to get it back up to snuff: new carpet, paint, appliances, and a good number of other things. So not only will the lose me as a tenant, but they'll have to invest in the remodel. This after 8 years and I'm estimating that I've payed about $70,000 in rent.

I wonder what would happen if someone flounced and Charles refused.
That's like an offshoot of "supposed they had a war and nobody came..."?
California has pretty robust privacy laws. Unless as part of the registration process, they agreed to a "terms of service" (which given the animosity and subterfuge of some of the registrants--I would wholly recommend one), they have a right to have all their information removed. Even their posts...
Attrition.org had the absolute best TOS. They are a grey hat site that was used by both the black and white hat "hacking" community. They would archive new and novel attacks for security, attribution, and forensic reasons. Often the victim would find out about their security breach through the site and, therefore, blame the site out of pure ignorance. Part of their TOS included the right to post any material submited to the site in perpetuity. Their "going postal"[1] section is a dark, humorous copy of Griffin and Sabine. [2]

I think when they ask to leave, they should be 'sentenced' to post every 30 minutes for 24 hours so the Lizards can make fun of them, then block them.
Why in the world would someone ask to have an account deleted that they never use? Of course, just to get street cred over at a stalker site.
Also, I don't believe claims that a stalker site is ready to 'make peace' - that's obviously something to drum up traffic on their site. I hope nobody is tempted to check them out - what would be the use?

Well, in case you're not quite to the last ditch yet: many cities have tenant-landlord mediation services. The one in Baltimore is called Baltimore Neighborhoods and they're really quite good. You could call them and find out what the equivalent group is in your area. Just an idea. Mediation and some kind of workable agreement could save you the move.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. I'm back from a well-deserved vacation, and see that the more that things change, the more they remain the same. I'm glad I missed the whole balloon boy crapfest, but see that the health care debate isn't so much a debate as an attempt to continue a 1-sided attempt by Democrats to push through health care without explaining their numbers or that it involves significantly raising taxes on everyone - both directly and indirectly.
The money has to come from somewhere to pay for it all, and yet the Democrats repeatedly try to obfuscate.
Meanwhile, we've got reports of actionable election fraud in upstate NY, linked to none other than the WFP (an ACORN offshoot). That's not merely voter registration fraud, but fraudulently cast ballots. Of course, the state and local officials haven't exactly bothered to enforce existing state law either (a problem that remains a nationwide issue since we've repeatedly seen state and local official around the country incapable of enforcing existing election law that is supposed to reduce the likelihood of election fraud).

Not so. At least in HR 3200, there was a whole section devoted to a federal Healthcare Workforce, which in essence was a whole federally run schooling/training/employment program for new health care workers. It's similar to some existing federal sponsored schooling programs, but it's kick up to a whole new level.

And if that 8000 ceiling is considered prime coverage, and a taxable ceiling, than a lot of people are in trouble. I'm not sure what the National Post was referring to, but perhaps it's the idea of "Support Obligations by Industrialized Countries" on pages 19-20.

Not only will this shit pay off for him, it'll spark a wave of imitators.

According to a drudge link, that would offend people.
