Why I Left the Right, Exhibits B and C

For the first of today’s facepalm-inducing audio clips, we have Sean Hannity going Birther, claiming that wacko wingnut site World Net Daily is just doing “due diligence” by obsessing over Barack Obama’s birth certificate, and saying “Given his father’s birthplace, what’s wrong with asking if Obama has a legitimate birth certificate?”

FLV Video

But wait! Still more facepalm goodness awaits!

Also today, Rush Limbaugh indulged himself in some of that good ol’ patented Limbaugh race-baiting, saying “The black frame of mind is terrible,” and “Tiger Woods’ choice of females is not helping ‘em out with their attitudes there either.”

Classy!

When I want to know about the "black frame of mind," the first person I think of asking is Rush Limbaugh.

How long before someone tosses out the "he was only joking" excuse?

3 Killgore Trout  Tue, Dec 8, 2009 3:59:28pm

Take a look at the front page of WND today. Swine flu conspiracies and they're claiming the bogus foiled terrorist attack last week is being covered up.

4 Jetpilot1101  Tue, Dec 8, 2009 3:59:34pm

Charles, unless I heard the clip wrong, his "the black frame of mind is terrible" comment was refering to a story he was going to share. The Tiger Woods comment was just plain uncalled for. Not trying to defend Rush by any means here so please don't take it as such.

Rush has no clue what black people are thinking and it's insulting for him to speak on behalf of black Americans. I'm sure if you looked at the polls black people like Obama just fine.

8 tradewind  Tue, Dec 8, 2009 4:01:49pm

I agree that mentioning the race of Tiger's babes is not 'classy', but Limbaugh is echoing what has been already said by pundits of color on MSNBC and MSM programming such as The View. It's hardly original to him.

9 darthstar  Tue, Dec 8, 2009 4:01:54pm

Sean Hannity is just trying to boost his ratings, and figures he can ride Sarah's coattails for a few weeks. That, or he's truly a stupid human being.

Limbaugh is always looking for the next thing that will get him a lot of attention--being a bigot seems to pay pretty well, so he's sticking with that for now.

Honestly, I can't believe that any of these mouthpieces--Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, O'Reilly, Coulter, etc.-- believe half of the crap they spew...they simply spew it because it pays the rent. If there wasn't any money in being a racist asshole, they'd all either be moderates, or in Hannity's case, baggers at Wal-Mart.

How do either of these points help conservatism (that's Goldwater!)? Seriously- this does nothing to promote limited government and individual liberty. It's stupid, and hateful, and the damage these men are doing to a movement they claim to care about is awful.

The most effective tool that Limbaugh uses is not his exact choice of stories to misrepresent. It is his continual us vs. them rhetorical framework, which includes everything from language to personalities selected to highlight.

This is strong, unspoken reinforcement for the racist/xenophobic crowd, and it is why they consider Limbaugh their ally.

I don't know about anyone else here, but I thought jokes involve some actual humor. If Limbaugh were joking/being sarcastic (which he clearly isn't), he's doing a really crappy job of it as people take it at face value. Someone needs to tell his apologists sarcasm is supposed to be at least slightly obvious.

But the world is full of beautiful women of all colors, shapes and sizes -- some with short hair or almond eyes, some with broad noses, some with yellow or brown skin. Woods appears to have bought into an "official" standard of beauty that is so conventional as to be almost oppressive.

The difference is, Eugene Robinson is not doing what Limbaugh does. Limbaugh is pulling out the Stormfront-lite rhetoric, day after day, week after week, year after year. He influences millions of people. And the deeply stupid and gullible among them swallow his rhetoric like eager pigs.

Agreed with Hannity being a stupid human being; he's the fool who "borrowed" footage from Glenn Beck's 9/12 rally and tried to pass it along as part of his own sponsored rally. Sean Hannity is not a smart person. I sorta doubt that's going to become a scandal. The only reason it might cause problems is if Fox cares enough to crack down on him. I don't think they do. He could easily turn his show into an hour long infomercial and I don't think it would bother the management.

Hasn't Art Bell been doing the gold-hawking conflict of interest for like 20 years? In between talking about time travelers, remote viewing, chemtrails and Gozer the Gozerian, of course.

I pretty much agree. They exhibit such a shocking lack of internal consistency that they would have to be truly braindead not to realize it, and Rush et. al. aren't dumb. (I think Hannity is legitimately a little slow, but most of these guys are quite shrewd.)

I assume that by now, they've long since come to the personal inflection point where they had to ask themselves: "Do I stick with saying stuff that I genuinely believe, or do I just go for the ratings." They chose the latter, and doubled down.

That's fine and all? I mean... if they're popular and pull in the money on the airwaves, I'm all for the capitalist part of it. More power to them. It the choice is between getting 100% of 1/4 of the population or 10% of the general population, then from a business perspective you can't really blame them.

It does make one wonder, however, where that leaves the Right. If their "leaders" (as confirmed by Republican voter perception polls) have so obviously checked out and gone for sheer ratings / infotainment value, where does that leave conservatism as a legitimate political ideology?

Which makes them valuable for predicting actual elections or issues on the ballot; less so for judging the actual levels of support or opposition for issues in the general public. Politicians must find their polls very valuable.

Really, the important thing about polls are not the levels but how they change over time.

Tiger already had a white wife, had been married to her for several years, so why is the race of his lady friends suddenly important? Also, the man himself is like, triracial, so it's basically impossible for him to date in his own community. Add to that her Facebook post from last Thursday:

[Link: www.facebook.com...]

The president’s decision to attend the international climate conference in Copenhagen needs to be reconsidered in light of the unfolding Climategate scandal. The leaked e-mails involved in Climategate expose the unscientific behavior of leading climate scientists who deliberately destroyed records to block information requests, manipulated data to “hide the decline” in global temperatures, and conspired to silence the critics of man-made global warming. I support Senator James Inhofe’s call for a full investigation into this scandal.

...

Policy decisions require real science and real solutions, not junk science and doomsday scare tactics pushed by an environmental priesthood that capitalizes on the public’s worry and makes them feel that owning an SUV is a “sin” against the planet. In his inaugural address, President Obama declared his intention to “restore science to its rightful place.” Boycotting Copenhagen while this scandal is thoroughly investigated would send a strong message that the United States government will not be a party to fraudulent scientific practices. Saying no to Copenhagen and cap and tax are first steps in “restoring science to its rightful place.”

If you'd like to point and laugh at a lefty for old time's sake...

Andrew Sullivan's a "lefty?" Last I checked he's an "It's Complicated."

Wikipedia: "...a libertarian conservative who has argued that the Republican Party has abandoned true conservative principles.[12] He views true conservatism as classical libertarian conservative, where economic control of a citizen's daily life by the government is very limited. However, this style of conservatism differs from classic libertarianism in that some governmental control or regulation is acceptable in order to preserve a functional society as it currently exists..."

re: #290 Sharmuta

I don't believe there was.

Mills stated that she needed approximately £360,000 for personal security, £175,000 for her daughter’s security, £176,000 a year for clothes, and the ownership of four homes:[101] one in Beverly Hills, one on Long Island and two in England with a combined value of £5,700,000 as well as £8 million (up to £12,500,000) to buy a home in London, £3 million to buy a home in New York, and £750,000 to buy an office in Brighton, England, for Mills’ sister. She also asked for £1 million for legal expenses, £650,500 a year for donations to charities, £650,400 a year to run seven properties with staff,[102] £500,000 a year for holidays, £186,000 a year for chartered helicopters,[103] £43,300 a year for a chauffeur, £20,000 a year for a caregiver, and £191,150 a year for "professional expenses". Mills unexpectedly asked for £40,000 a year for wine (although she rarely drinks alcohol) and £30,000 a year for equestrian activities,[104] but Justice Bennett had to remind her that she did not ride horses any more.[105] Justice Bennett questioned Mills' claim that before she met McCartney she had £2 million to £3 million in bank accounts, so she was asked to produce bank statements to verify the fact. Mills replied that she thought she had them at her home in Brighton, but no bank statements were ever shown to the court, which also cast doubt on her assertion that she gave 80% to 90% of her earned income to charities, as her tax returns (between 1997 and 2000) showed no charitable donations at all.[26][106] Near the end of the court case, Mills calmly poured a jug of water over the head of McCartney's solicitor, Fiona Shackleton, shouting, "You're a bitch! You're a traitor to your sex! How could you do this to another woman?" and, "I'm not a loser".[107][108][109]

The hearing took six days, finishing on 18 February 2008, with the judgment being made public on 17 March 2008.[26] Mills was eventually awarded a lump sum of £16.5m, together with assets of £7.8m, which included the properties she owned at the time.[110] The total was £24.3 million, plus payments of £35,000 per annum, for a nanny and school costs for their daughter

I think Robinson just threw the "Barbie" thing out there but he was smart enough to blame Tiger for being "insecure and image-conscious" instead of going the Rush route. Come on Eugene can't Tiger just like that kind of Woman? What is wrong with that?

Also, the Rush clip is 30 seconds selectively pulled by media matters. They have played this game for well over a decade. Media Matters is no better than those youtube videos from the election that selectively pulled short audio or video of Obama saying things that were likely out of context.

I'll agree with you that he was smart enough to go the conventional route and not discuss the REAL issue that would piss off so many. That is that white, blonde, and skinny is our culture's image of beauty. That leaves out a whole population of beautiful women of color and size.

In all seriousness, Sully's "neurosis"--if we're calling it that-- seems more an attempt to impart personal transparency and self-generated moral urgency into his commentary, than any sort of utter insanity. (Trig stuff aside...)

Charles, unless I heard the clip wrong, his "the black frame of mind is terrible" comment was refering to a story he was going to share. The Tiger Woods comment was just plain uncalled for. Not trying to defend Rush by any means here so please don't take it as such.

Exactly what I was going to say.

The "black frame of mind" comment taken out of context sounds pretty horrible, but he was referring to a report that said their frame of mind was bad due to the job obama was doing with the country. Didn't see anything wrong with that comment, other than it is most likely a made up report that doesn't exist.

Not trying to defend rush, but lets not jump on stuff taken out of context and be hypocrites here...

Tiger comment was totally uncalled for, however.

No, he's still a conservative, just not as robust or proud as he once was; he's a pragmatist who actually believes in things like compromise and good governance.

His book of a few years ago was called "The Conservative Soul" and his favorite philosophers are Oakeshott and Burke. He's still a big believer in limited government and a softened version of American exceptionalism. And he still has a hard-on for American style capitalism, including a giant man-crush on Reagan, who he calls the greatest post-war prez (one of the few things he has in common with Palin).

He can seem like a lefty at times because of his strong support for "marriage equality" and legalization of weed, as well as his distaste for the religious right. But he supported Bush in 2000 and through his first term. Like CJ, he's disillusioned with the current state of the conservative movement and desperately wants the right to grow up or fuck off.

Dems agree to drop the public option in health care bill.

link.

So then what's left in the bill for the right to object to? No abortion funding (at least on House side), no single payer, no PO, no death panels (not even in SPs imagination).

What's left is hardly a manifestation of the type of "radical govt takeover of healthcare" that the Hannitys and Becks and their teabagging legions have been crowing about for months.

It's a night to remember John

When he was killed I was too young to really know who he was. I still remember it though. I was in primary school at the time and everyday we had reading time where my teacher would sit us down and read a book. That day he started reading and eventually had to stop because he kept choking up. It was the first time I remember seeing an adult man cry. Of course we didn't know what was going on until he explained to us that a man who was a musician and important to him had died and he was very sad. He didn't tell us he'd been killed. I found that out when I got home and told Mom that my teacher had been so sad today that he actually cried. Mom explained it more and then put on a Beatles record so I could hear it. That was the first time I remember listening to them and I liked it so much I played in over and over until I knew all the words.

he didn't even know he owned the Dakota...he was jamming with Paul...his immigration issues where behind him...he was feeling creative...his loss rocked my world

I didn't even know he owned the Dakota either. Are you sure of this?

In looking to fact-check on Google however, I discovered that there's a FBI/Lennon moonbat conspiracy theory. Amazing what people will come up with.

The poster at Hot Air are going over the top in a health care thread. Talk of states refusing federal money and succession were just the start. Shoot outs with the capital police, and than this one.

"I couldn’t care less what the Obamunist’s view is, I intend to put the rope around his neck when Obamunist hangs and I DARE for him or his lackeys to send anyone after me. I guarantee our military will support me in this, why?, because I work with these good folk every day. "

"we have Sean Hannity going Birther, claiming that wacko wingnut site World Net Daily is just doing “due diligence” by obsessing over Barack Obama’s birth certificate, and saying “Given his father’s birthplace, what’s wrong with asking if Obama has a legitimate birth certificate?”

I guess I've managed to distinguish between, "I won't accept your legitimacy until I see a real and good copy of your birth certificate" and "What’s wrong with asking if Obama has a legitimate birth certificate?”
The former is annoying birtherism. But I have no problem with the latter. I I guess it depends on what Hannity *really* believes.

Palin actually says that the CRU scientists represent the "radical environmental movement!"

Argh. This is a one-woman stupid factory. She doesn't know the difference between "weather" and "climate" and uses the terms interchangeably.

Awwh come on, do you think she even knows the difference between a scientific theory and and a hypothesis (i.e.the colloquial use of the term "just a theory").

Anyone who can't tell the difference between Creationist "theory" and Evolution "theory" can't possibly be expected to understand the difference between the Climate and the weather.

I read the entire Rush monologue cited and find that it is a criticism of the stuck in the past Black leadership, not race baiting. To get a better idea of what he is saying, I noticed the following blog commentary from Elizabeth Gates, a black woman, posted at the Daily Beast talking about Tiger:

"As a young black woman myself, who also prides herself on being a card-carrying feminist, I suppose I should be outraged by his infidelity on many levels—naturally, the most “important” being that yet another black man has abandoned the race and succumbed to the wanton ways of those dirty white women who lurk in the shadows trying to steal our men."

While she then confides that she doesn't care about Tiger, she accurately describes the stereotypes, and the serious social problems created by those unfounded stereotypes, held by the traditional Black leadership. If a commentator who is white cannot say essentially the same thing - both criticizing unfounded racial prejudices and stereotypes - just because of his race, then I don't see us getting any further in our country's race relations.

I honestly can't tell what Rush Limbaugh is talking about in that clip. If it is a "racist dog whistle," I am proud to say I can't hear it.

"The black frame of mind is terrible"

One I first read it on the main page without listening, I thought it was disgusting. Now after hearing it in context and knowing that it is referring to how black people feel according to the rev. I think it's ok.

Why did you have to make it sound like Rush was race baiting even more than he did with the Tiger Woods comment?

It is hard to understand an out-of-context audio clip. Media Matters does this all of the time.

Using anything from media matters as source material is as bad as using World Net Daily.

The usual Rush Limbaugh apologetics. Yawn.

By the way, did you think I didn't notice that you sneaked back in after being banned?

so the birth certificate was provided to some sources, a scan was provided, and the govt of Hawaii verified this... so why is this still an issue.

How did all other Presidents prove their eligibility I wonder. It seems like Obama has probably done more than that by now. There needs to be one standard that's consistent, someone assigned to verify it, and then Sarah Palin et al shut the hell up.
