One can, however, become a blue-skinned superman by staying in the middle of a large chain reactor and concentrating hard on willing the various parts of the body back into existence afterward.

Congratulations to all you fucking nutters who blew up the Republican party.
It's awfully hard to blame the leftists for being leftists. The Commies and the Socialists will always do their thing, and we used to be able to stop them. Not anymore, thanks to you children who decided to "punish" the Republican Party by withholding your votes in 2006 and 2008.
At least you can comfort yourselves with the knowledge that you maintained your precious ideological purity. You sent the Democrats to the White House, and the Republicans to the nut house.
Enjoy the Poor House.

BTW, some very amusing reactions to health care coming in over twitter. I'll put together a list-- hysterical conspiracy theories are being propagated via #tcot and #gop, and lefties are using those hashtags to taunt the black helicopter types. I just saw one that said 'everytime a wingnut cries, an american gets health care.'

Life imitates art? This was the premise for an entire episode of Better Off Ted, where facial tracking software was installed to make employees more productive by opening doors for them, flushing toilets, turning on drinking fountains and so on. Except it didn't recognize blacks.
The corporation's first response, rather than admitting fault and fixing the software, was to install separate drinking fountains for blacks. This didn't go over well, so they hired white homeless people to follow the blacks around and trigger the sensors. Some of these folks were almost immediately turned into slaves, running errands and holding places in line for their black masters...
Great show. Tuesday evenings. ABC, I think.

Just a note on this fixation with HA and other such sites: as entertaining and disturbing as such comments are, driving a whole bunch of eyeballs over there is counterproductive. Their advertising rates are determined in part by how many visitors they receive, so constant linking can wind up making them more money, at least in the short run. That's why Charles so often links to page caches, which they get no credit for.

Given that Drudge now lists HotAir, as well as FreeRepublic, under his list of "news" sites, I suspect that the traffic sent HA's way by links in LGF comments is down in the noise.
The MM/Beck wing of the American body politic is now well self-defined and self-referring. Fortunately they are a minority of Americans. IMO the big loser in this is the GOP as it is now the farthest away from its origins as it has ever been.

I see that Washington, DC passed a gay marriage bill with an overwhelming majority the other day, and the mayor has said he'll sign it.
Because of the peculiarities of DC's charter, the measure now must be approved by the US Congress. This is normally a rubber stamp procedure, but as might be expected this is already generating considerable heat.
It's also not clear where this will leave Clinton's Defense of Marriage Act.

I did my annual Chirstmas Trip To The Mall yesterday. I always make it a point to go to the mall the weekend before Christmas. I pick up stocking stuffers and gag gifts, and generally spend my time trying to be nice to the clerks. If you've worked retail during the holidays, you know those people are on their last nerve at this point, and sometimes a kind, smiling customer can make all the difference.
Anyway, I've gotta say: the mall was dead for this time of year. There didn't seem to be any more traffic than on any normal Sunday - typically a slow day anyway. Plenty of parking, most stores had no more than a couple of people in them, no crowds in the hallways.
Not a good sign for retailers, at least at the brick and mortar level.
My bold prediction is that retail sales will be down significantly this year.

I'm sure you're right. Add to it the major snowstorms keeping people on the east coast at home, who would have shopped -- and on the last weekend before xmas too. Isn't this the biggest sales weekend, or the second biggest after Black friday? Disaster.

Oh, I don't know if he does or doesn't; I just mean that it is going to increase pressure from gay rights groups in general about DOMA, regardless of the final outcome in DC. They weren't at all happy about the lack of action on DADT and DOMA in May and June, and other progressives essentially told them to shut up and quit whining until health care was in the bag. (That was the sentiment I saw a lot).
There was a sort of grudging agreement by them to wait on the issue. This will likely bring it to the boil again.

I've done all my main shopping over the Internet for several years now, but I always go to the mall anyway, as noted. With all the shopping pressure removed, I actually kind of like the holiday buzz.
But traffic is down noticeably this year over anything I've seen in the recent past.
I expect we'll see another round of layoffs shortly, as retailers calculate their balance sheets.

The rushed, secretive way that a bill this destructive and unpopular is being forced on the country shows that "reform" has devolved into the raw exercise of political power for the single purpose of permanently expanding the American entitlement state.

Could be. It'll certainly stir up the nutballs, which is fine by me at this point; they're increasingly marginalizing themselves anyway. One pastor, commenting on the DC bill, said something along the lines of it being a victory for Satan in his attempt to destroy America by cutting off it's head...or something. He was a little hard to follow.

I know. I predicted downthread that the predominant rightwing meme on this would be that it's passage was 'secretive', 'rushed', and they'd focus on it being done 'in the dead of night'. (they will also focus on the 'partisan' nature of the bill).
Reality isn't a barrier to them. Reality would remind them of your points above, remind them that the republicans were dtermined to vote in a block against it, regardless of what was or was not in it, and the 'lateness of the hour' is due to republican delays (and fun little tricks like 'forgetting' their voting cards and the like in order to delay votes. )
Never mind. This is all a giant surprise, rushed through in the dead of night during a snowstorm, all to trick the American people. (this will be the wingnut meme, you betcha--that and focusing on the so-called partisan nature of the vote).

Egypt raises alert as Hamas plans to protest new Gaza barrier
Egypt security forces along the border with the Gaza Strip have raised their readiness level over a Hamas rally planned for Monday, organized to protest the a new underground barrier, Israel Radio quoted a Sinai-based German news agency as saying on Sunday.
The barrier, which is to be comprised of enormous slates of steel, reaching deep into the ground, is meant to aid security forces in preventing cross-border smuggling tunnels.
On Saturday, security officials said Gazans shot at Egyptians installing the underground metal barrier meant to seal cross-border smuggling tunnels.

Iran braces for protests as 'up to 1m' attend funeral of reformist cleric
Hundreds of thousand of mourners, many chanting anti-government slogans, reportedly gathered in the Iranian city of Qom for the funeral today of leading reformist cleric Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri.
Defying a heavy presence of security forces the funeral became a rallying point for further protests against the disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

"The initiator of this incident was not the opposition but the government showing a picture of a leader of the protest movement wearing the hijab, as if he was hiding and trying to run away," he said. "They were trying to say 'We are the manly Revolutionary Guard and you are all sissies hired by Westerners.' In other words it was supposed to serve the government in their psychological warfare against the opposition."
"But the opposition said 'Fine if we are sissies, then we are all sissies, but we have no hang ups or inhibitions and we support equal rights for women'," Dr Pardo said. "So it may seem like a stunt but it's actually a major challenge to the regime."
"You have to understand the background," he added. "Using dress as a tool of repression or asserting a central authority is common across the Middle East and particularly in Iran. As such, taking off the hijab has been seen as a symbol of freedom in Iran since the beginning in the mid-19th century and this has been constant both before and after the Islamic revolution. So what we are seeing today on these websites is the use of women as a symbol of freedom and the beginning of a process of resistance to this new Islamic regime."

The hot fashion items for this season? Short skirts, tight jeans with long boots, and short jackets for cold days.
That may not sound exceptional, or even very trendy, but this is the fashion forecast from Baghdad, where the climate for more revealing women's wear has been steadily improving. Many Iraqi women say it is a sign of returning security and freedom after years of war and sectarian tensions.
The new look can be found at the clothing shop of Ali Mohammed, a 25-year-old entrepreneur whose customers are young women, many of them college students. Mohammed boasts that his fashion line is for the modern Iraqi woman, not what he deprecatingly calls "classic designs for classic ladies."

Israel holds crucial meeting on prisoner swap
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his top ministers on Monday debated whether to approve an emotionally charged deal to trade 1,000 Palestinian prisoners for an Israeli soldier held by Gaza militants for more than three years.
Netanyahu and six ministers had met three times on Sunday, including a session that lasted late into the night. With the group divided over the proposed deal, Netanyahu could well bring the final decision to a vote in his full Cabinet.
At a protest tent outside the prime minister's official residence, dozens of demonstrators carried cardboard cutouts of the captured soldier, 23-year-old Sgt. Gilad Schalit, and urged Cabinet ministers to wrap up an agreement.

Heated debate again over 'War on Christmas' claims
Republican Rep. Henry Brown of South Carolina introduced a resolution this month asking that the House express support for the use of Christmas symbols and traditions and frown on any attempt to ban references to the holiday.
"Each year, I could see a diminishing value of the spiritual part of Christmas," Brown said. "It would seem like another group would go from the Christmas spirit to the holiday spirit."
"What I'm afraid of -- if we don't bring some kind of closure to this continuous change, then in 20 years it will almost be completely different from what we see today ... and so we would lose the whole emphasis of what the very early beginnings of Christmas was all about."
So far, the resolution has one Democrat and 72 Republicans as co-sponsors. The House hasn't taken it up, but the chamber adopted similar resolutions in the past.

Iran cleric's mourners protest against government
Tens of thousands of Iranian mourners turned the funeral procession of the country's most senior dissident cleric into an anti-government protest Monday, chanting "death to the dictator" and slogans in support of the opposition amid heavy security.
Witnesses said security forces clamped down in Iran's holy city of Qom where massive crowds streamed in for the funeral rites for Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri, who died Sunday at age 87.
One opposition Web site reported clashes outside Montazeri's home between security forces and mourners, who threw stones. Iranian authorities have barred foreign media from covering the rites, and witnesses spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of arrest.

Backlash boots Palin from hospital fundraising
Palin has brought the American health care debate to Canada and it is causing a storm of controversy as concerned hospital supporters have protested her appearance to raise money for two local institutions in April.
The former vice-presidential candidate was supposed to speak at a fund-raising event for the Juravinski Cancer Centre and St. Peter’s Hospital in Hamilton. But a backlash of negative publicity cancelled those plans.
The Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation received about 60 angry calls and e-mails from residents since the event was announced last week. About 10 people said they would not be donating to any event in which Palin has a role.

Saw Avatar.
Visuals Amazing. The landscape awesome.
The story, the most boring going native, noble savage, evil white man, innocent native type fantasy you don't have to imagine because you have seen it 100 times.
If there is anything that annoys me it is the casting. Did Cameron really have to cast all the big simple, happy natives with African and Native American voices? Really? Is this where he is in the 21st century. Especially, since they were speaking an invented language (cool points) why did he need his cat people with tails to be "authentic" "minorities," the second in quotes since among earthlings (the presumed group invading the natural planet) in fact whites are a minority which does not seem to register with Cameron.
I can see angles from the so called right and left both arriving at the conclusion that the plot of Avatar is as poorly conceived as the technology is mastered in minute detail.

Shalits neither 'optimistic, nor pessimistic' on Hamas deal
The parents of abducted Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit met Monday with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as senior cabinet ministers broke from their fourth consecutive meeting on a proposed deal with Hamas to see the soldier freed after three years in captivity.
Noam Shalit, father of the abducted soldier, said following the meeting that the prime minister had given the family no new updates regarding the deal.
"There's no drama here, I have nothing new to say," said the elder Shalit. "The process is ongoing and should end soon.... We heard nothing new. [Netanyahu] updated us as much as he could. I am still not optimistic, nor am I pessimistic." The "forum of seven" ministers were to continue deliberating the possible prisoner exchange deal on Monday afternoon at 4 P.M.

Some states 'held climate talks to ransom': Brown
Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Monday accused countries of holding the UN climate summit to ransom as bitter recriminations swirled over the outcome of the negotiations.
Summit host, Danish Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen, admitted leaders had been left with too much to do by their negotiators while Britain said the meeting had lurched into farce and pointed the finger of blame at China.
Brown warned that lessons must be learned from the way the negotiations were carried out.
"Never again should we face the deadlock that threatened to pull down those talks. Never again should we let a global deal to move towards a greener future be held to ransom by only a handful of countries," he said.
While Brown refrained from naming countries, his climate change minister Ed Miliband said China had led a group of countries that "hijacked" the negotiations which had at times presented "a farcical picture to the public".

Everest has its native name... that's cool, too. Bombay had a name before we showed up.

That's funny. Reminds me of India changing the name of Bombay. I wonder how long it would take for the entire US-hating world to change the name of every US influenced person, place, or thing?
If extra terrestrials showed up and called re-named Washington, DC the word that described "Place of incredible corruption" we'd still call it Washington. (at least until we learned how to pronounce it in their language)...
And... I doubt they would say, "Kneel before Zod."
Just sayin'.

I will. Technically, I have three weeks off now until I start working on our first show of the 2010 season. I have one concert to run on Jan. 2nd, but other than that, nothing to do at the theatre.
But, I may not even have that job by the new year, since I am going to an interview in an hour for a retail position that is at least minimum wage, full time with benefits and would bring me about 400 dollars more a month than the theatre.
I can't live much longer on the salary I am getting at the theatre, not since they cut it 55 percent in Sept.

Well it looks like I have a new cat. When we moved in here there was this cat on the property, I expect maybe the previous owners had it, though not sure. It had no interest in going inside and mainly hung out around the barn. It got to the point where he would let you pet him and would hang out with me in the garden. Last couple of winters we made a cozy cat cave in the leanto greenhouse and gave him food. He survived okay.
Two days ago I opened the basement door and the cat dashed inside and hid somewhere in a stack of boxes. Damn. My other cats of course came down to check out this new thing. Yesterday I put some food and water out and he came out. For the first time ever he let me pick him up. He was all purry and cuddly and as much as I tried I just could put him back out into the cold and blowing snow. I'm a big suck. So I made a deal with him. Show me that you'll use a litter box and you can stay in the basement.
Well I just went down and not only was he using the litter box but was hanging out with one of my other cats as if they had known each other forever.

Another Settled Science decision... A Maine legislator wants to make the state the first to require cell phones to carry warnings that they can cause brain cancer, although there is no consensus among scientists that they do and industry leaders dispute the claim.
Hey, if they can get a non-binding political agreement in Copenhagen, heck, quaint little Maine should be able to make some inroad on the junk science scene.

You need the cats!!
...OVERLORDS to see to it ya don't slack on your chores!!
LOL. It's just a small barn. I have about 3 acres. Right now it's the sole remaining rooster that seems to be on Overlord duty. He's a noisy bugger and tells my cats where to stuff it.

I think both vxbush and Mandy's illness wouldn't be affected, but I have to take this opportunity to sing/post the praises of the NETI POT.
Lizards, it is a miracle device.
I've had sinus problems all my life --been on 3 rounds of allergy shots and have at least one annual horrible (steroid prescription worthy) sinus infection in the Fall.
This year no sinus infection, NO allergy meds. So far, no flu either--and my son had it in October. I usuallly get whatever he brings home.
(Cat Overlord thinks it is humorous to watch me pour water up my nose.)

Now, just how superior is European travel to ours?
A car that veered off an icy road caused the derailment of a Paris commuter train, injuring 36 people and adding to the agony of a system badly hit by a 12-day old strike. Another commuter train in the Croatian capital hit a buffer Monday injuring 50 people.
Six people were killed in accidents in Germany and three in Austria. More flights were cancelled in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and many main highways were blocked across Europe where some regions had more than two feet (50 centimetres) of snow.

I really don't have a problem with it. US folks can call it Angel Falls forever, but they had it named before we saw it.
Everest has its native name... that's cool, too. Bombay had a name before we showed up.
That's like Crystal Cove used to be called "Scotchman's" before it fell under the "booted foot of the lifeguard state" (Big Wednesday reference).

I actually use their Sinus Rinse product when I'm in the throes of a cold or infection. You're right. It does do a lot of good. It's prevented me from having a sinus infection this year, and usually I get them like clockwork. So glad to hear it helps you as well.
Which makes it so funny that my family practitioner, while appreciating its merits, can't stand the thought of doing it to himself. Heh.

It is hard to remove, and it would probably grow back. I found out when it completely closed when I was 40 and I couldn't swallow anything. Total vindication for all those years of my family giving me hell for being the last to finish dinner or choking on pills when I was little. I go in periodically to get it stretched. Gross. I know farmers that will occasionally have to bring a newborn in if it's not feeding properly or has some other problem but not to live inside.
The people that owned this place before had a puppy mill. The place was totally disgusting. Our real estate agent said that when he first showed up there were over 20 dogs inside. The house was literally full of s**t. When I moved in I spent 3 weeks outside living in a tent while I cleaned the place out. It was totally worth it though because I bought it for way, way, way below market value.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. They're still digging out from the snow, but in my neck of the woods, things weren't too bad at all - 6-8 inches total snow, and roads were cleared by morning. They got closer to a foot of snow in Manhattan, and getting across streets can be extremely trying with mountains of snow and the slush so that you can't be sure how deep any puddles may be.
At the same time, the Obama Administration keeps digging in on trying to empty Gitmo for political reasons. They'd rather send a detainee to Somalia, which has no functioning government and where al Qaeda and their coreligionists routinely engage in all manner of barbarism that detain them further at Gitmo or any other site that the Administration will choose for terrorists. Does the President think that this will improve US national security by sending detainees back to countries such as Somalia?

...Hard work and knowing it's worth it!
Pricless!!
Yep! It's funny though because I know people who thought/think I'm absolutely crazy for doing it. Sure it was hard and the whole process literally stunk but it was just three weeks. The well sucked too and I had to put up with only water that was good enough for the toilet and bring all other water for a year until I could afford a new well. Sure it was an inconvenience but the payoff was huge. Not only do I have a home that was totally affordable but equity wise it's now worth three or for times as much. Once all the renos are done it will be worth 5 or 6 times as much and I still won't have spent anywhere near the money on it if I had bought the thing in pristine condition.
I don't think I'm the crazy one. :D

Well, he'd be wrong, particularly when 30 of those released have gone on to be recaptured or killed. Catch and release is a bad strategy. It doesn't work in a law enforcement setting, and is certainly doesn't work with terrorism. It only encourages further terrorism and violence. And al Qaeda has routinely used the weakness of resolve in the US as a rallying point to further attacks against the West and the US in particular.

I just hung up on the other driver's insurance representative. This woman called me Friday and insisted on interviewing me while I was sick, barely able to lift my head. She recorded it. I don't know why I didn't hang up then but I reckon I was just too sick to tell her to leave me alone.
She wants to send the adjuster to my house TODAY. I reminded her that I was still sick, that I hadn't had a chance to get an estimate on the damages. She got snippy with me and said she just wanted to get this done so that they could get my car fixed. I mean, snippy.
I told her I'd let her know when I was ready and I hung up on her.

Doesn't he talk with Napolitano? Wasn't she the official who talked about the Somalis in Wisconsin who've disappeared into Somalia?

My brother's "barn" cats (they live in a storage/wood shed) steer clear of the chicken flock. If they come in range they get pecked. And if there is something interesting in the compost heap the cats clear out once the chickens come to check it out. Chickens are vicious little beasties; and Aracunas are a nasty breed amongst the others.

Apparently, it had to do with snow getting into certain electric components on the trains themselves, causing shorts. They've had snow shields, but apparently didn't figure on this particularly cold snap.
It makes you wonder whether they paid attention to weather reports and winterized their equipment, just as they usually do in the States. Heck, most of the problems with commuter trains in the NYC metro area were due to cars getting stuck on LIRR crossings during the storm and its aftermath preventing the trains from crossing (and then the 2 feet of snow hampering access to the 3d rail.

Morning all! Well, Sen. Reid was able to buy enough votes to pass the Senate health bill. In other news, the CBO wrote a letter to the Senator stating that, due to an error, the calculated reduction in the deficit would probably be smaller than originally reported.
Here's an article on some of the sweetheart deals that were made:
The Price Is Right? Payoffs for Senators Typical in Health Care Bill
I realize the CBO doesn't respond to requests from private citizens, but I'd be grateful if they'd take a look at the number of dollars pledged to states like Louisiana, Nebraska, Vermont, and so forth. At the same time, factor in the $200 plus billion in physician Medicare reimbursement pulled out of the health bills and being considered separately.
What happens when these costs are factored into this health reform proposal? If the deficit reduction was smaller without these numbers, what happens when they're taken into consideration.
Oh, by the way, these senators have shown themselves to be as venal, corrupt, and short-sighted as I always suspected they were.

However I do think that a public official that stands up in policy debate, calling for people to pray for something to happen to keep opponents out of the debate isn't exactly great use and in this case a great Christian use of prayer.

Right; it sounded like this distinction was not being understood, which is why I said the vote was for cloture. I was trying to make it clear that the bill has not yet itself been voted on.

re: #441 vxbush
I have read in at least one place that Nelson is now talking about not voting for the bill itself, even though he voted for cloture.
That would be great, but I wonder how he could possibly explain that to his constituents. He works a deal that exempts the state from its Medicaid funding obligations - permanently, then votes against the bill. That would be hard for him to justify I would think.
But, we can always hope!

I'm not sure what you're saying. I said that crazies all around the country (tea partiers) compare this bill to nazi politics. Do you disagree? How does the fact that both sides sometimes use a broad brush invalidate that?
If you "don't know what I'm saying", how can you comment on it!?!?!
Here is waht I AM saying. You have extrapolated a comment by a senator to mean something ver terrible, then in the very next post state "Just to clarify: I'm obviously not psychic. I don't know what he thought"

re: #446 Killgore Trout
What the heck then is up with those on left-right convergence (inclusive of the Tea Party agenda) on health care like Jane Hamsher (firedoglake) notes:
Glenn Greenwald and Ed Kilgore both have very good pieces up today on the impoverished left/right dialectic that dominates the media coverage of politics, and its inadequacy when it comes to discussing the dynamics of the health care debate. The sight of pundits yucking it up about the "Democratic circular firing squad" have become as tedious and threadbare as those counseling "don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good." Both of these admonitions have at their heart the notion that "liberals" are being irrational, unreasonable and rigid in refusing to accept the Senate health care bill. But in the very next breath, they will then promote statistics that say the tea parties are more popular than either the Democratic or the Republican party, and wonder if it's an opportune time for a third party candidate. (From the "right," of course, because who would take the "left" seriously.) At no time do the synapses firing in their brains make the connection that both the "lazy progressive bloggers" and the tea party activists are saying almost the exact same thing about the Senate bill.
We indeed live in strange times.

Not that I really need to state this in LGF of all places, but I think groups like Code Pink et all have made it very clear that the left is perfectly capable of hysteria. Believe me, as a leftist I was just as a sick of hearing about how Bush was going to throw me in a FEMA camp and feed my family to Blackwater as many conservatives are now sick of hearing about how Obama is going throw them into FEMA camps and feed their families to ACORN.
Bad Crazy is just that, bad crazy. I don't associate it with any particular ideology or end of the political spectrum.

Sen. Coburn: ‘People Ought To Pray’ That A Senator ‘Can’t Make The Vote Tonight’He even pauses when he says it. I think he knows what he's implying.
I suppose some people might be upset with Coburn for using his relationship with the supreme being unfairly, or other people might be upset with him for trivializing their religion. I think this falls into the "I hope the opposing team can't make another touchdown" category of praying, which is a kind of spiritual email spam.

Mr. Obama promised a new era of transparent good government, yet on Saturday morning Mr. Reid threw out the 2,100-page bill that the world's greatest deliberative body spent just 17 days debating and replaced it with a new "manager's amendment" that was stapled together in covert partisan negotiations. Democrats are barely even bothering to pretend to care what's in it, not that any Senator had the chance to digest it in the 38 hours before the first cloture vote at 1 a.m. this morning. After procedural motions that allow for no amendments, the final vote could come at 9 p.m. on December 24.
so how does the public get to view this bill...will it be posted as promised?...claims are made there is no hiding anything, so where do we get to review it?....where can we see the pork deals that were cut?...I hate the feds

It really is almost funny how much overlap there is between the hysteria on both sides, at least in my mind. Is there really any difference in the level of crazy between
"Bush is a War Criminal!" and "Obama is a Muslim Usurper!"
"Bush is a skull and bones plant!" and "Obama is a communist plant!"
"9/11 was a bush plot!" and "Obama will allow another muslim attack on America!"
Only difference I see is more of a racial/ethnoreligious undertone to some of the attacks on Obama. But there was also constant suggestions that Bush was racist, so maybe that too balances out.

1. I totally agree that this is a reasonable interpretation of what Coburn said.
2. However, because there are quite a lot of (coincidentally) religious nuts out there calling for revolution and murder to stop this bill, and they are loosely aligned with his Party, he might want to clarify this, so there is no misunderstanding.
3. If he doesn't clarify it, I personally wouldn't wish any kind of political blow back on him, because it is trivial.
4. However, I think it's Ok to mention, on the same day and on a blog, that this was an unfortunate thing to say, considering 2.

And how can you read it, is there a copy of the MOST RECENT senate bill available? What, you have some inside source that other senators and citizens don't have?
This IS the most recent bill:
[Link: democrats.senate.gov...]
These are the changes that will be voted on Tuesday morning:
[Link: democrats.senate.gov...]
Once the managers amendment is voted on then the bill with the changes will be voted on, probably Christmas morning.
Even then that will not be the final bill as this will go to conference and be merged with the House bill.

Hi Walter! Yep, and we can add payoffs to particular senators, particular states, and even - as SteveC notes - the cosmetic surgery industry, at the expense of the tanning salon industry.
It is not - as you pointed out - freaking out over a health reform bill, it is simply being opposed to THIS particular bill.

The cosmetic surgery tax was never going to recover the kind of revenues that would make it work; just look at NJ which already has a cosmetic surgery tax. It has failed to live up to its revenues. It generates about $30 million a year in NJ.
Just don't expect the tax on tanning to be any different. It's a nickel and diming of America via taxes that most people wont end up paying, and which may end up killing still more jobs.

You live with Basement Cat?
*shiver*
If you had a drop ceiling in your basement (like I had) and your cat lived in that, wouldn't it be Ceiling Basement Cat? (and the world would explode?)
I did have one of my cats in said drop ceiling once. He and his brother had caught a starling in the house. I'm chasing after said cat in order to get the bird away from him, and he is fleeing from me since he doesn't want to give it up. (And the second cat is trailing the action to watch the fun.)
Since my first floor is circular in nature there is no easy place to corner the cat. So I open the door to the basement to block access to the kitchen and hopefully herd him down there where he will be easier to catch. That works and the cat heads down the stairs. Halfway down, the starling takes the initiative and grabs the light carpeting on the stairs with its feet.
This surprises the cat and causes him to drop the bird. Bird promptly flies up into a gap in the drop ceiling. Now I have a loose starling and a couple of cats giving me the eye for causing them to lose their prey.
Immediate (and stupid) thought is to get a cat into the drop ceiling to flush the bird out. Nearest cat is volunteered and rapidly placed there. He initially goes for it since he can hear the bird rattling around on the ceiling tiles. However, a short time later I have a bird rattling around in the ceiling, and an upset cat meowing a storm in the ceiling. (Half-siamese - sounds like an air raid siren when he is upset or ready to fight.)
I find a appropriate spot and get the cat out of the ceiling. He is dusty and not pleased. So I clean him off, and get the cats out of the way by giving them some freshly un-canned tuna to eat. Bird still wandering around.
To finish up...
Next morning I close all doors on second floor and leave basement door open figuring the bird would eventually come out. Next afternoon I return from work and am not greeted at front door by the cats. So something is up. One cat comes halfway down the stairs from the second floor, sees that it is me, and goes back up the stairs.
I get a pair of gloves on and go up the stairs. The starling is perched in corner of the ceiling right where two door frames are close together. Circling below are two cats ready to take up the chase.
I grab the starling, take it downstairs, and toss it out the front door where it immediately takes flight and clears the area. I think it got off lightly all things considered.

Speaking of left wing hysteria, this is the email that Jane Hamsher of FDL is sending round this am:
Hi [iceweasel] -
The Senate's health care bill must be killed.
It is an ungodly mess of errors, loopholes, and massive giveaways. When the American people find out what's actually in this bill, they will revolt. Congress and President Obama have no choice but to do better for health care than this bill.
Sign the petition: the Senate health care bill must be killed.
How bad is the bill?
1. Forces you to pay up to 8% of your income to private insurance corporations -- whether you want to or not
2. If you refuse to buy the insurance, you'll have to pay penalties of up to 2% of your annual income to the IRS
3. After being forced to pay thousands in premiums for junk insurance, you can still be on the hook for up to $11,900 a year in out-of-pocket medical expenses.
4. Massive restriction on a woman's right to choose, designed to trigger a challenge to Roe v. Wade in the Supreme Court
5. Paid for by taxes on the middle class insurance plan you have right now through your employer, causing them to cut back benefits and increase co-ays
6. Many of the taxes to pay for the bill start now, but most Americans won't see any benefits -- like an end to discrimination against those with preexisting conditions -- until 2014 when the program begins.
7. Allows insurance companies to charge people who are older 300% more than others
8. Grants monopolies to to drug companies that will keep generic versions of expensive biotech drugs from ever coming to market.
9. No reimportation of prescription drugs, which would save consumers $100 billion over 10 years
10. The cost of medical care will continue to rise, and insurance premiums for a family of 4 will rise an average of $1000 a year -- meaning in 10 years, you family's insurance premium will be $10,000 more annually than it is right now.
I could go on, but it should be clear: this is not reform. This is a con job.Sign our petition: kill the Senate bill.
Make no mistake, we need health care reform. But the Senate's idea of reform is a disaster, and will make things far worse than they are today.
We will continue to fight for real health care reform. Now, we must kill this fake reform.
Thanks for all you do.
Jane Hamsher
FiredoglakeP.S. Please, after you've signed, forward this email to your friends, family, coworkers - anyone you know. It's critical we act fast to kill the Senate bill, and we need everyone we can on board.
Anyone know if this has been factchecked anywhere yet? My understanding was that at least number 4 was a distortion. Not sure about the rest yet.
Anyway, I thought conservatives might take heart to know that MoveOn and FDL are pretty damned unhappy with the bill as well.
(sorry for the driveby, will be back later-- have a great day all. Apologies if someone already posted this)

I was guilty of a double foul with the Siamese brothers. They got snipped and front-declawed at the same time. The latter is something I won't ever have done again to a cat. Though the new Cat II* (a calico) likes to get my attention by batting at my bare arm with the claws out. Not sure where she picked that habit up from.
*- Cat I is the surviving brother. 18 years old, deaf, and survived a hyperthyroid condition via radioactive iodine treatment. Cat II was adopted in March from a friend and is a 9 year old female calico. I'm of the opinion that having two cats is massively preferable to a single cat.

Since cats are always on topic here's a second cat story.
Two Christmas seasons ago I'm up in western New York state visiting my brother. As previously related he has three "barn" cats living in the utility shed with the small tractor and various tools and implements. They get by with limited feeding since there are plenty of mice and chipmunks about to keep felines fed. And the shed entrance for them is elevated and fairly small for keeping the raccoons and foxes out.
On Christmas Eve my brother calls me while everyone else is out. He asks me to call a local animal shelter to see if they can take a cat. And that I should take the cat currently in a carrier in the utility shed there if I can.
Turns out that a male cat from a nearby farm has moved into the shed. Warm straw-lined box to snooze in, food available, and three smaller cats that he can bully as needed (two female, one male). My brother noticed this and has caught and put the cat in a carrier to be removed.
My brother wants me to do this in order to create plausible deniability. If neither his wife or daughter know that the male cat has been "disappeared" then if asked they will honestly say they haven't seen the cat.
Turns out the local shelter is a women acting as a go-between about 15 miles away. And they're currently closed for the holidays. So that's not going to be a solution. I go out to the shed, release the cat (who is quite the sociable cat), and then shoo him off the property in as non-violent a manner as possible. Tell my brother later on what has happened and that a shelter is a no-go as an option.
After dinner on Christmas I volunteer to take some turkey scraps down to the cats in the shed. Lo' and behold, guess who is in there sleeping in the straw-lined box. Not that I really expected him to stay away. So I catch the cat (rather easily) and he ends up back in the carrier - where he is not so pleased with himself.
I inform my brother (without his wife or daughter hearing) and other plans are made. He contacts someone he knows who has a dairy farm about 9-10 miles away, and they're willing to add another cat to their barn cat population.
The next morning my brother and I head out to run errands. We smuggle the carrier into the back of my car and head off. The cat freaks out partway there, and we have to stop to calm the cat, and rinse out the cat carrier.
Once we get to the dairy farm we release the cat near the barn. He initially hangs out with us for a few minutes since despite the various travails he is still sociable. Then he turns and just walks into the barn liked he'd been raised there.

One does not become fully human painlessly.— Rollo May
I took a life drawing class from Rollo May's brother. I can't remember his first name. He was a pudgy old guy with incredibly thick glasses. He was always smiling and laughing. He showed us his portfolio of work done for Conrad Hilton in the 50s and 60s--great stuff like you see preserved on Lilek's site. A lot of my fellow students were the ladies who draw caricatures at Knott's Berry Farm and Disneyland. They loved Mr. May. I wish I could remember his first name, I can't figure it out from what I found on the internet. It cracks me up that Rollo is famous for writing The Courage to Create and My Quest for Beauty while his brother was doing it.
