Christmas Tree-Gate, the Diabolical Sequel

Weird • Views: 3,375

Just when you think the Evil Christmas Tree Scandal might be subsiding (along with Bowgates One and Two, Queen-touching-gate, Children-Indoctrination-gate, Shopping-trip-gate, Plagiarized-painting-gate, and all the other goofy wingnut-gates), Christopher Knight uncovers another diabolical scheme from the Usurper in Chief and his diabolical wife: The Great Christmas Ornament Scandal, Part 2.

To recap, last week a right-wing blog published a grainy photo of a Christmas ornament on the Obamas’ enormous tree. The image of Warhol’s “Mao” purported to add further evidence to insistent claims that the president is actually the Manchurian candidate — a callous secret socialist bent on destroying American democracy from within.

Then, on Christmas Day, another blog made a startling discovery that may turn that sinister notion on its head.

A second ornament, right next to First Lady Michelle Obama’s well-toned right arm in an official White House photograph, appears to show the smiling face of former President Ronald Reagan, complete with the Stars and Stripes billowing behind him. Little Green Footballs, where an eagle-eyed blogger made the extraordinary find, firmly implanted tongue in cheek and ventured a guess: “Maybe it’s Stalin disguised as Reagan?”

The truth, however, might be even more ominous.

The year in which the Reagan image was made cannot be easily determined from the photo. But perhaps it depicts the president during the Iran-Contra era, when America surreptitiously sold weapons to Iran to illegally fund anti-communist rebels in Nicaragua. If so, the Mao ornament needs to be rethought. The photographic proximity of the Reagan ball to White House muscle might signal some as yet unrevealed shenanigans on the part of the newest Nobel Peace Prize winner. Talk about a diabolically clever strategy of plausible deniability.

But wait, it gets even worse.

No one has yet speculated on perhaps the most damning Christmas ornament of all, which Culture Monster is the first to identify. Also hanging on the tree — right next to a red one blatantly covered in stars — is a decoupage ball featuring the Hollywood sign with Liza Minnelli, Michael Jackson and James Dean. Just wait until the Family Research Council finds out: All three are well-known homosexual icons, a fact that raises serious concerns about the Obama-era fate of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and the Defense of Marriage Act.

The … horror.

Well, unless I'm missing something here, it doesn't, unless you consider a satirical essay on the LAT blogs as "legs." In this case, someone won't let it die...

Does the First Family even decorate the official tree themselves? For crying out loud. Wouldn't they have a private tree with their own ornaments collected over the years, like the rest of us, in the private area of the White House for themselves where they select their own stuff?

I am no fan of the Obamas, but criminitlies!

They are rooting for Amahdinajad and company. It makes an attack on Iran easier to sell. They have admitted as much. Showing that Iran may actually not be a homogeneous anti-west, dear-leader state would be against their interest. IMO

Nigeria bomber's home town blames foreign schooling

Abdulmutallab was educated at the British School in Lome, Togo -- a boarding school mostly serving expatriates and students from around West Africa -- before studying engineering at University College London (UCL), where he is believed to have lived in a multi-million dollar city-center apartment.

One friend who knew him in London said he kept himself to himself and always wore a skullcap, rare among young Nigerian Muslims who usually wear such caps only on religious occasions.

Nigeria's This Day newspaper said he had been given the nickname "Alfa" -- a local term for an Islamic scholar -- while at school in Togo, for his preaching to other students.

He also made two trips to Yemen during his student days for short Arabic and Islamic courses, according to a family friend.

So, was it London or Yemen or both, that summoned the spirit of Jihad in his young breast?

We have passengers who take extraordinary and heroic measures and current administration officials who are completely clueless, something is terribly wrong with this.

We also have a media that ignores big stories in favor irrelevancies. We're hosed.

"Despite that red flag, Abdulmutallab was not elevated to more exclusive - and perhaps manageable - lists of some 18,000 people who are designated for additional security searches or barred from flying altogether. Napolitano said that would have required "specific, credible, derogatory information" that authorities didn't have.
A U.S. official said the father's concerns were shared among those in the embassy, including liaison personnel from other agencies based there, such as the FBI. The alert was then relayed to Washington and again shared among agencies such as the State, Justice and Homeland Security departments, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the investigation."

156 Mad Prophet Ludwig  Sun, Dec 27, 2009 5:41:13pm

This is off topic, but I really can't muster the energy to completely bash on the utter stupidity needed to read secret messages into Christmas ornaments that were made by others for a big PR thingy. I obviously think that Charles should post on this as a sort of historical low water mark in how deranged American political discourse has become, but, it takes a special kind of paranoid delusional to think there is an actual issue with the ornaments, and I just don't have the energy to even dignify them with a snort.

I do however want to write about thermodynamics - that misunderstood branch of physics that we knew sooner or later would have to make the rounds in various denier screeds. We knew t would have to because the DI types love to abuse the second law - while it took some time for the AGW denier types to start trying to abuse the first law.

The AGW deniers will say that somehow the Earth can not be warming due to AGW because t violates the first law. They then mumble something about heat not being able to flow from a cool body to a warmer one.

Now this is a confabulation of many things and completely mess up, so let's take it one bit at a time.

First off, what does the first law say?

Well it says:

dU = dQ - dW

In English, if the heat of a system is used to do work, the change in internal energy of a system (dU) = the heat in the system (dQ) minus the work done by the system (dW).

Or to be really basic... energy is conserved. You don't get something for nothing. Energy flows wherever it is going to flow and it does not go away.

We could re-write this as

dU = TdS - dW and relate this to the increase in entropy in a system also. Entropy is best thought of in this context as all the places that energy can go in a system that aren't doing work for you. But let's not confuse the topic. I am particularly intrigued by how the fools who write this nonsense can imagine that the first law of thermodynamics is broken somehow by the actions of a GHG. That requires a special kind of stupid.

So what is the process? Well the sun burns... As it burns it gives off light which carries energy to the Earth. This is radiative heat transfer. We all know it is a real phenomena and anyone who has seen a heat lamp or gotten a sunburn has the basic idea of the phenomena.

Those photons are caught by the GHG. OK the first law says that energy will not go away. So what does it do... Well, it could heat the molecules themselves, or it could be re-radiated. It has to do something like that because well the first law assures us that energy is conserved.

If it is re-radiated and caught by something else, then again, those photon either give up their energy to vibrating the something else - or they get re-radiated. Why, because the first law and energy conservation assures us this will happen. Now it turns out that some things are better at re radiating than others.

Water for instance, is really good at catching IR photons (so are you and a lot of other things), but it does not always re radiate them. It likes to wiggle and jiggle a lot when it catches them... this is a transduction of the energy into internal heat. Does this violate the first law?

Nope... Work is supplied from the outside (photons hit the water) and dQ goes up. Hmmm... So there really is no problem.

Now the zeroth law of thermo is sometimes stated that energy flows from hot to cold between bodies in thermal contact.... OK so again? What is the beef? The deniers who believe they have something here miss the point about thermal contact. This ignores radiation. If somehow there was a violation of Thermo by the way they get this wrong, then the sun could never heat the Earth at all.

But of course, they don't think through their nonsense enough to see that.

Anyway, I just wanted to clear up a little basic physics.

I would think so too. If a guy goes to the US embassy officials to report that his son might have become radicalized and poses a risk, I would think the authorities would take such a warning very seriously. I would think it is a very serious situation indeed if a FATHER reports that his son poses a risk.

The Colts can argue having a first round bye and needing to save players health.

The Colts also pulled wide recievers.

However, she wasn't saying "the system worked" because the passengers tackled the terrorist. She was saying the system worked because the system-wide response following the incident worked well.

On Stephanapolous it seemed, at least to me, that she focused on the passengers more than anything else and had a little smile that I found offensive.

She did mention the system wide response and the TIDE list. I also understand that she can't say much because investigation is pending. So I'm assuming she wanted to make a more positive statement. Maybe even a thumb in the eye of AQ, but it came across very poorly.

I like her, but maybe she oughta let someone else speak for the office next time.

I'm aware of the details behind the movie, and very familiar with some of the tunes, of course seen the "broomstick" scene, a lot of people have, but I've never seen the whole movie. I don't like animation really much at all.

Although my step-critters got me "Up" for Xmas, which I do want to watch, only because I love Asner (the actor, not his politics).

Leopold Stokowski. All his self-image management obscured the fact that he was a great artist.

When I was growing up there was a tendency to disparage the old man as
a charlatan ... Today it is all very different. Conductors as
distinguished as Sawallisch and Bamert have recorded his transcriptions
whilst Stokowski himself is recognized as the father of modern
orchestral standards.
-- David Mellor

Stokowski came forward with bowed head, evidently pondering the content
of his musical message. Those who went forth to see a hirsute
eccentricity were disappointed. They beheld a surprisingly boyish and
thoroughly businesslike figure who was sure of himself, yet free from
conceit, who dispensed with the score by virtue of an infallible
memory, and held his men and his audience from the first note to the
last firmly in his grip.
-- anon. critic of the Philadelphia _Public Ledger_, 1912, on
Stokowski's debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra

The moment he stepped on the podium [in 1976]--and it's no
exaggeration--the years literally dropped away. I found him quite
extraordinary because his hearing was outstandingly good. He heard
things that very often the producers, myself and Roy Emerson, or the
engineer didn't pick up. He heard notes that he disapproved of. He
asked for certain balances and he was always right in asking for them;
it was like recording a conductor in his prime, at the age of fifty,
say. The only thing that I think should be mentioned and it's very
important: it's been suggested that in those final years, the
orchestra was absolutely dedicated to him and they played almost
without him--that he was just standing up there in front of them.
That wasn't true for one moment and you only have to listen to any one
of the last few recordings he made. There are certain rubati and
controlled accelerandi that only a conductor can achieve, and he knew
exactly what he was going for and exactly how to get it.
-- Paul Myers, then vice-president of CBS records, in Oliver
Daniel's _Stokowski: A Counterpoint of View_

OK...

The greatest drummer ever....

Ringo Star...

Here me out a minute. no one else was in a band as big as the one he was in, as a drummer, who didn't explode, immolate, loose all his money or otherwise just up and die.

Yet, Ringo kept his money. Stayed friends with everyone and goes hoe to Barbara Bach each night...

So... I give him greatest drummer ever - though not for his drumming.

Miami is what I would consider a big city, yes? We have one rock station and one classic rock station and they both suck. I tend to listen to the ONE country station (well there's 2, but one doesn't come in). All the rest is pop, easy listening, hip hop and talk radio. The ONE classical station that operated for 30-40 years was closed down a couple years back. I don't think they replaced it.

Clear Channel also censors which I can't bear.

Love that one, have seen it many times. I should warn you all, I am huge fan of good animation. HATE most modern cartoons that assume kids are stupid, nobody cares about quality, and cheap 3-D animation, celebrity voices, and references to bodily functions are all that is necessary to make a good cartoon.

Did you ever catch the International Animation Film Festival on your local PBS channel, back in the day? Pretty amazing stuff. i always check the Oscar nomination list for animated short films for something interesting.
Do you like stop motion animation? Wes Anderson's " Fantastic Mr. Fox" is supposed to be quite good.

I can't listen to classic rock radio anymore. The ones here in CT - you can hear their entire playlist in about one day, and they never change it. If they play a Led Zeppelin song, it's Stairway To Heaven. If they play a Rolling Stones song, it's YCAGWYW. No variety. And for some reason, disco is also considered rock now.

I don't think it's a lack of ideas or talent. It's what sells that gets played, and it ain't music. There's a wealth of talent that won't get played because they aren't hot and sexy enough.

Been to any concerts lately? 1 singer 15 dancers. Of course pop music is replacing rock now. It's all done in a studio and lip synced on stage. It's a formula.

I like Lady GaGa. I like her voice, even if she's Madonna like. And I like her look even if it freaks me out a little. She's original, yet not really, but no one is doing what she's doing now so that sets her apart.

It's been that way for a looonnng time. In most markets, it's impossible to find a radio station that will play new music by artists that nobody has ever heard of.

She also can actually sing and has actual talent as a dancer as well. She is that rarest of things, someone with actual talent, making it big. I don't think she is amazing in everything she does, but she does have a vast amount going for her that I can respect.

It's been that way for a looonnng time. In most markets, it's impossible to find a radio station that will play new music by artists that nobody has ever heard of.

Paul Slavens in Dallas is a notable exception.

And here's Frank Zappa's explanation of why we never hear anything 'actually' new anymore (circa 1986, I think)

That reminds me of the PMRC a lot. Here's song that was considered one of the "most objectionable" and part of the "Family 15" list:

Twisted Sister - We're Not Gonna Take It

It also reminds me of when Zappa was on Crossfire and had to debate those two assholes.

I don't think it's a lack of ideas or talent. It's what sells that gets played, and it ain't music.

Oh, I entirely agree. Not that I get to be exposed much to it without looking HARD. Creativity doesn't die - it just takes on new life. I know the "kids today" (I told you I was old, right? *g*) are just as creative and talented as kids in my day who had a shot of being heard. I just wish I could turn on the radio and hear them, hear something besides the same basic tune or formula being such with different lyrics over and over again.

I'm, down with Lady Gaga. I love her.

Yes, had actually googled it when you sent first link. Its cool. Interesting and futuristic. But my point, or the one I was trying to make, is that homes built in the last couple decades are not recognizable as such. They don't seem to have defined a 90s, or 2000s style yet. Then again, maybe the people in the 1920s didn't think their homes were setting a new style either. The reason I noticed it at all was we bought a 1958 house and the realtor pointed out that nowdays, resale is negatively effected if you "update" the look too much. People like "retro" more than new in these smaller houses.

Plus, I can't help but wonder if rock is simply played out now. Maybe being the best rock act of 2009 is like being the best bebop act of 1969, or the best swing band of 1973. Maybe it's simply all been done, and there's nothing to do but listen to the tribute bands until something new grows out of the ashes.

Mid-century is a total rage right now, not just in architecture but furnishings and accessories. My cousin, the antique guy, is making a killing with this stuff now. But you're right in that it seems that this was the last period in which architecture had a distinctive style.

The older housed also have thicker walls, doors, better windows, more wood and brick. Our house is a typical suburban front to back split from 1990. One of the last with lots of wood trim. I think the newer homes are copies, you're right. Copies of lots of different older styles in a "McMansion" size.

I guess my hang up is the whole Army bratt thing. Post housing always looks the same. They make dozens, hundreds of copies of the same house, changing the color and which side the door is on. That's what I grew up around and I was always jealous of the cool unique houses we saw off post and in the movies. You'd think they would have caught on to how people hate cookie cutter housing, but they just built on at Drum and they're just as blah as ever.

True. I look at all the thoughtful and innovative architecture in and around Chicago and it kind of spoils me. Even the condo buildings often have a concept that makes them not bland.

I hear ya - I grew up in Chicago (Park Ridge, specifically). It's been many years since I've visited there, but it looks as though they are doing a lot of renovating of the wonderful old buildings to keep the heritage there while modernizing the interiors, especially along the lakefront. Is the new construction keeping up with the charm of the old?

Yes, for the most part. Some townhomes are cookie-cutter but others (such as the one my parents live in work to incorporate differences and keep the vieww interesting. Chicagoland rewards the bold and punishes the bland. A good case in point are two condo buildings on River Road in Des Plaines that I pass at times. One is all concrete, an ugly building with a high slab front. It went into foreclosure before it was finished. The other building, the Everleigh, uses brick and glass and incorporates an asymetric design that gives extra space and adds charm and character. Despite the real estate crash, it was able to be finished and has actually sold some of its units.

This is exactly why radio has become irrelevant as a medium for discovering music, and why the internet is now the place to expose yourself to new music. I can't remember the last time a radio broadcast prompted me to buy an album, but there are literally hundreds of albums I've bought after discovering them on the internet. There is no paypola, it's opt-in, it's in your own hands to find new music. I never would have heard of Solefald, I would have never been able to get ahold of Kevin Moore's Chromakey album, I would have never heard of 16HP, Submarine Fleet, Four Tet, Dalek, Saru, Baroness, Skeletonwitch, Adam Freeland, Muslimgauze, Blind Divine, Gojira, or any of a hundred artists and bands if it weren't for the internet.

It does. Several of the single family homes near where I live were knock down to make room for the new condos. To be fair, some of them were in poor shape and none of them were anything special. The attraction of condos in downtown Des Plaines is for commuters. You can walk to the Metra train station from there and and if you don't work downtown the expressway is only a short drive away. It's a very good location.

I got to that point about 15 years ago. Its absolutely dreadful. And you left out the part about how the only Aerosmith song shall be Dream On and Dream On shall be played at least once every day.

see though, I was a teenager in the '90s, I grew up with my dad's records but I only had an appreciation for that music in my late teens. Physical Graffiti, Dark Side of the Moon, those were practically new discoveries for me in 1999/2000. I can't imagine what 30 years of Dream On would've done to me. Thanks radio, for killing the music.

There are extensive forest preserves in Des Plaines. I once was in a car driving by one and say a group of deer. Unlike most times, the deer were not spread out. Rather all the fawns were clustered together with the adults surrounding them and the bucks facing outwards. I soon saw why they were doing this: a coyote was skulking around at the edge of the clearing and the deer were in a defensive formation to protect their young.
