Science is done by humans?
Well, it's time that the gods do it. Then they can tell us the truth, and we'll know when they're telling the truth by, uh, I guess by doing science.
Until then, we should only believe the truth revealed to us by unobserved and unseen spirits to humans. And we'll know that it's the truth because religious revelation agrees across all cultures and religions.

To answer a question you asked before I left for work this morning, and I didn't answer...
I don't know when Cato the Elder will be coming back this way. He is at a 15 days retreat in Ca., it started the 22nd of Dec., and it's a no talking sort of retreat, so he can't call or anything.
He will give me a holler when he is ready to head out, and he may or may not be stopping by, depending on what he decides to do next. His whole traveling schedule is open to his whims.
I schlepped a shit load of furniture today... half-priced Sat.

Someone is using my name for a "stalker" twitter account, which posts vile things about people here.

I don't work at the theatre anymore. I quit two weeks ago, after two years of starving artist wages, I decided to at least find a 40 hour a week job that pays something better than non-profit theatre.
I'm working retail for a major non-profit charity thrift store in the furniture department, which means pricing used furniture, electronics and appliances and moving them, hauling them, fixinf them, you name it...
It's hard work, it pays about 2 dollars over minimum and I'm making about 10 thousand more a year than the theatre.
All in all, considering the economy, considering my age and considering I have only been able to get off and on contract work iin my profession, programming, this will work for now.

It's interesting that he doesn't link to a post of yours where you have defended Kevin Jennings.
He links to a post at Gateway Pundit, where this appears:
UPDATE 2: Tom Stelane adds:
I just commented on LGF, asking Charles or anyone else there to go a little more in-depth in disagreeing with GP other than by asserting that ‘you’re bad’ – you know, like maybe dealing with the actual facts surrounding Jennings instead of making sweeping general assertions. I was polite and stayed on topic even though the LGFers couldn’t refrain from getting in digs at me. I only asked, did Jennings do or not do these things in question? I did not violate his comment policy but Charles promptly deleted my comments, banned me, and commented that I am a ‘moron.’
That must have been "264Tom". I can't find in that thread where you specifically called him a moron. Also - there were several responses to him that were not of the "dig" sort. Odd that he would not ackowledge that.

But after a while it starts reading like those hate mails calling someone a fag and then lovingly detailing how said gayness would play out in detail. Yep. There's something obsessively prurient about the specific level of detail involved, the care with which they lovingly imagine just how the imaginary scenario plays out. They appear to spend a lot of time thinking about the mechanics of the physical acts.
It doesn't have to mean they want to perform those acts, but what does it mean when they can't stop dwelling on them? I don't know, but it isn't good.

My favorite engineering class was EE 120, Linear Systems but all of my other favorite classes were in the Classics Department. Brilliant teachers.

UC San Diego is a fucking awesome school. I both love and hate the Furd. I worked in Silicon Valley and there were so many startups that got started by Stanford. Ixnay. Sand Hill Road is right next to Stanford.
Google got started at Stanford. Larry+Sergei were grad students essentially redoing what Altavista and several others had already done. Nothing particularly novel. But they did come up with PageRank and got a patent for it which Stanford paid for and then licensed back to them
for nothing.
Stanford owned the patent and nobody but nobody fucks with the Stanford legal department. Nobody. In the end Stanford knows that its alums will give back. They just do. (Actually Cisco is a sore point since the founders were alums but rather sysadmins).
Andy Bechtolsheim (Sun co-founder and Stanford alum) gave them a $250,000 check on the strength of a laptop demo.

This interview gets interesting once Conn Carroll starts getting angry at you. Not that the beginning was boring, but I already know your background from reading the blog.
I can't believe that he says Pat Buchanan is not mainstream, he's the face of the Republican party on MSNBC. Yes, he started getting his panties in a real wad when you hit the AGW segment, from there it went downhill. That whole segment on Oregon and Euthanasia was him trying to stuff words in your mouth, and you could see that it's prime issue to him, try as he might to pose as a moderate. Conservatives want no part of Buchanan. They can discount him as "mainstream" due to several factors. In both 1992 and 1996 he mustered only 20% of votes in Republican primaries. In 2000 he ran in the "Reform" party, denouncing both main parties

If conservatives "want no part of Buchanan," explain why his columns are published at every single conservative website.
The same reason he's a main contributor to MSNBC. He's a "name", he has a history, and he's a rabble rouser/ crumudgeon now

He was just continuing the dance he started when he got banned. Let me tell you the steps (this has been posted before but one of the steps is new):
1. Log on to LGF and drop a turd of a comment on a thread.
2. When people call your attention to the turd you dropped, whine and complain about how "LGF is not as open as it used to be".
3 (new step): Seethe and rage in butthurt craziness after iceweasel kicks your ass.
4. Hurl insults when other people point out that you got things rolling by dropping the turd.
5. Get bounced out on your ass by Charles.
6. Brag about your "brave truth telling" on the stalker blogs while nibbling your martyr cookies.
Charles has always been fair..5 simple rules on top and you can post anything you like..
Every Sunday Morning There is an LGF Prayer list.. We have seen miracles in Lizards lives..And not once has Charles ever declared the end of prayers at LGF...He is a very fair man that doesn't put up with BS.

Part of that is because of his stupid assertion in September 2009, he had used the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the German invasion of Poland to argue that Britain should not have declared war on Germany and MSNBC removed a Buchanan opinion column from its website after receiving complaints from Jewish organizations
Another part is during the campaign for the 2000 Presidential elections, the comic strip Doonesbury included a story line where Buchanan is implied to be a neo-Nazi, using dirty tricks to keep the Doonesbury character Uncle Duke from becoming a competitor for the Reform Party of the United States of America nomination

I've seen several posters here argue that Buchanan is only on MSNBC as part of a vicious lefty plot intended to make the right look bad. I am jesting in suggesting that every single conservative site that hosts him is also a seekrit lefty plot intended to make the right look bad.

Buchanan:
"First, America has been the best country on earth for black folks. It was here that 600,000 black people, brought from Africa in slave ships, grew into a community of 40 million, were introduced to Christian salvation, and reached the greatest levels of freedom and prosperity blacks have ever known."

Hence his 20% in both 92 and 96 and not even getting off the ground in 2000, thus running a Reform Party candidacy, which is where I started
I actually think that getting his ass kicked by Daddy Bush in 1992, then coming in a very distant also ran to Dole in 96 pushed him over the edge. He tried to get back at Daddy Bush in 2000 by running a (what he thought would be ) Perot style take out of Bush 2 like Perot did to Bush 1 in 96 (imho)

Don't know that he "used to be" anything other than what he is now. A beltway-insider opportunist who thinks and acts like politics is a sport. There is very little difference between listening to him talk and listening to the sports media talk about the NFL or NBA. Just change the nouns involved and its the same crap. FWIW, I have always suspected that Coulter and Limbaugh are also a bit like that. They entered the scene at a time when they could make oodles of cash with their particular schticks, but had there been the money at the time in being that kind of asshole for the left, they'd have happily done that.

How so??
After the 1994 mid-term election where Republicans took control of both houses of the United States Congress and gained considerable power in the states, Clinton once again sought Morris' help to prepare for the 1996 Presidential election. It was Morris who proposed a strategy that is now referred to as "triangulation," where Clinton would appeal to a diverse group of voters by distancing himself from both the Democratic and Republican parties.

From his point of view, he had a liberal Democratic staff that disapproved of everything I would urge. And he wasn't about to announce me with great fanfare if I wasn't able to really make the grade and give him advice that was effective. So both of us were sort of having a trial marriage. And we both figured it was better for me to be involved secretly. So I made up a code name, "Charlie" -- which, by the way, is the name of my favorite Republican political consultant, Charlie Black. And I just thought it was kind of funny that I'd use a Republican name, working for Clinton.

re: #237 Dark_Falcon
Actually, the left hated Dick Morris for convincing Bill Clinton to sign the Welfare Reform Congress had passed in 1996. Two of Clinton's officials actually resigned when Clinton signed the bill, and the left has disliked Dick Morris ever since.
All true, but it doesn't mitigate the fact that Morris was THE man for C linton while running for Governor, and Clinton brought him back in after the Dems lost in 94

Entirely true.

Entirely true.
And thats all I said. He was part of Clintons inner circle, with the other 3 I mentioned
ALL at variious times ,, sometimes all together

Hmmm,, he was the darling of the left when he was helping Clinton win two elections, and providing cover for him during Lewinsky, but as soon as he fell out of favor with Hillary he's not "Fox News's own",,,
hmmm
Yes, but you said he was the darling of the Left during the Presidency. In reality he was Clinton's secret advisor because the Stephanopolous etc hated him so much. Morris knew what to say and how to say it. Clinton knew what to do. It made for a good team.

He was the hate-sex of the Left.
There is some of that. I always wanted to know what he knew. The only decent political operative book I've ever read was Hard Ball. The Candidate is by far the best operative movie.
Anyone know any other decent operative books/movies?

re: #249 Olsonist
Really, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 is actually a great, great examination of political operatives.

re: #249 Olsonist
"Fear and Loathing on the campaign trail, '72" has some good stuff on political operatives, at least at the national campaign level.

Heh. Well, we have consensus.
Oh, and Pepys's diaries, too, Olsonist; no good for technical details, but still a political classic.

There is a great basketball book called 48 Minutes. I'm looking for the 48 Minutes of campaign writing. Primary Colors isn't bad.

Except that Primary Colors is really about campaign press coverage. Like I said, I want to know what Dick Morris knows.

Really, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign trail '72 shows you operatives at work, and talks about them honestly, with appropriate fear and loathing.

I read Hells Angels, Fear and Loathing in LV and FLOTCT. As he got more gonzo, I got less interested. It has been a long time since I've read FLOTCT; maybe there was something there but I don't really remember. Entertaining but not deep.

Yeah, I'm not interested in what we think of them (loathing). I'm interested in what they think of us and how. A users guide, so to speak.

It's a very good one. It's of course, slightly dated, but you can't get any current operative to write a real tell-all book, so I think that's the best you can get.

Hard Ball was the tell all book that Matthews wrote after he left Capitol Hill. It is quite good and very nuts and bolts.

re: #262 Olsonist
re FLTOCT: Specifically the part you'd find interesting (if you still have a copy handy) is the dialogue bit after the Democratic convention. Its very nuts and bolts and direct about the methods used by both sides to control the credentials votes.

re: #34 tradewind
Fiore is funny. Can't help but wonder if his depiction of Obama in New Year's redux would be panned as racist if found on a right-wing cartoonists' site, though.
[Link: www.markfiore.com...]
Great link! Good comics give it to everyone.
The racism contention is infeasible. I'll concede that unjust charges of racism do happen but they still need some kind of hook to hang the charge on. There's not any reference to race anywhere in this so a charge of racism can't possibly find a foothold. Even if, say, Limbaugh had produced this, it wouldn't be panned as racist.
