Anglican Vicar Uses Police To Intimidate Blogger

Blogosphere • Views: 4,343

In Britain, a blogger who’s been blowing the whistle on the Holocaust denial activities of an Anglican vicar finds himself in trouble with the cops: Harry’s Place » Anglican Vicar Uses Police To Intimidate Blogger.

As some people have noticed, I’ve been rather quiet in blogging about the Reverend Stephen Sizer’s activities of late.

After all, what more can be said of a man who forwards emails from Holocaust deniersshares platforms with Holocaust deniers, and shamelessly flaunts his anti-Zionist theology before Iran’s apocalyptic Holocaust-denying regime? As Iranian pastors are arrested and house churches closed down, why is the Khomeinist regime translating Sizer’s book on Christian Zionism into Farsi? How many more times can I point all this out?

Yet there’s another reason why I’ve been quiet, and whilst I’ve held my tongue and my pen for a while, now is the time to speak.

At 10am on Sunday 29th November 2009, I received a visit from two policemen regarding my activities in running the Seismic Shock blog.

UPDATE at 1/26/10 5:21:36 pm:

A clarification from Seismic Shock: Stephen Sizer: NOT a Holocaust denier.

Stephen Sizer is not a Holocaust denier – there are a few posts out there accusing him of “Holocaust denial activities“, which he hasn’t done. He has, however, cited Holocaust denier Dale Crowley as a seemingly credible source in an interview on Press TV.

This morning, Ben Hur posted an article about a Polish priest who is claiming that Jews use the Holocaust to their advantage.

I could see him getting a visit from his employer telling him to not use university property to post his blog and to do his blogging on his own time.......that would be fair. However sending in the Tommy's.....kind of weird.

re: #1 MandyManners

The Holocaust only receives media coverage because of affluent Jews' financial backing, military might and lobbying fronts, presenting a skewed version of events to the world, a high-ranking Polish bishop told a Catholic news portal on Monday.

Polish bishop and professor Tadeusz Pieronek told the Web site Pontifex.roma that while the Holocaust was not exclusively Jewish, Jews had monopolized it in lieu of encouraging "serious historical debate, free from prejudice and victimization."

Pieronek alleged that Jews today use the Holocaust as "a weapon of propaganda, used to obtain benefits which are often unjustified," citing as an example the unconditional support for Israel by the US. "This promotes a certain arrogance that I find unbearable," he said, explaining that Israel was using its position of power and exploiting historical tragedies to treat the Palestinians "like animals."

In Richmond, CA, you can't even get a visit from the police for five hours after you've been assaulted, so I'm pretty sure that the RPD does not visit bloggers to check in with them.

This, really. It's true that you're not allowed to publish just anything you want, but publishing factually true statements is hardly a crime. Libel cases have to demonstrate malice and falsehood; it's not libelous if it's true.

No. Those TSA agents were acting illegally--they didn't have a warrant and they didn't have jurisdiction.

The common thread is that the state is acting outside of the law.

I don't disagree. So we're left wondering how the state could justify getting involved in what is clearly a civil libel affair at most. The simplest explanation is that the Tommies weren't officially visiting on the state's behalf, but that they or a superior of theirs were buddies with the vicar. Disgusting, but not as chilling as the State coming down on a citizen with all of the force and power at its disposal...

This guy may be in real trouble. London is the world's capital for libel suits. Unlike in the US, where truth is an absolute defense against libel and slander charges, in Britain the defendant has to prove that he is innocent of the accusations. Rich sheikhs and others and others have used this to file lawsuits in London that they couldn't win here.

The article's a little fuzzy, but it sounds as if the author once hosted his blog on some university computer, and is no longer affiliated with the university, making use of their equipment at least questionable.

It also sounds as though Sizer has blown the incident wildly out of proportion.

But from what I gather, the original complaint, though motivated by vindictiveness, had enough merit for the police to look into the matter and "informally" request that the material be removed from the server in question, a request which the author - who was already hosted on another, privately held server - complied with.

Sizer's action and ridiculous reaction notwithstanding, it's worth keeping your house in order, especially when you place yourself in opposition to assholes with a great deal of time and bitterness on their hands.

What a weird set-up. How would the court keep the accuser from manufacturing statements? At least here the accuser has to prove that a statement DID exist on which the accusation can be made. I wonder how one goes about proving that they DIDN'T make a supposed statement...ugh.

Did I read this right? He got visited by Police and thus ageed to delete the old version of his blog? Why did he delete it? What was in it that he felt he was liable for? Why did he capitulate? If a university has a policy of not allowing their computers to be used for personal stuff, can the police be called to enforce it? If so, can somebody outside the university call the police and report him on this? Doesn't the university have to be the one with the issue with this? Doesn't he get due process? What would have happened to him had he not agreed to delete it? Lots of questions, not enough info.

My God, who are the 4 percent that believe NO money was wasted? Even somebody who completely supports the stimulus must understand that at least some waste is unavoidable when that kind of money is spent.

There are plenty of people who believe that taxes and government expenditures are themselves good things, nevermind their stated ends. "Doing" "something" is all that's needed to float their boats.

I remember reading something about libel laws in the colonial America. IIRC, it had more to do with perception of damage to reputation than the truth.

Just one more reason we are extraordinarly lucky that a couple of handful of men did what they did in the mid 1700's.

Most of them are just pushing the line of what the govt determines is allowable. The TSA gave up right away and FIRE constantly files lawsuits against a variety of universities for their free speech codes. OTOH, police are making arresting photographers a habit. The illinois case I linked is a fishing expedition that will eventually get tossed, probably, although in a case I didn't link to in AZ the judge ruled with the PD.

My only point is it's only a matter of time before the abuses we see in europe are common occurances here. We have a first amendment that protects us but it's only as strong as the populace keeps it.

I have many theories about that. If you give them everything they want yet nothing they need the behavior tends to reflect that. Putting kids in an overprotective/paternalistic system will drive the bad behavior underground but it won't address the root cause. Meanwhile the responsible kids pay the price without the crime.

WHACKOS from all sides have been doing it. No reason to single out a single sub-category. We need tom be aware of all of them.

It reflects a sense of overinflated self importance to believe that the White House or any other conspiracy theory rich target is after "them".

It could be kind of fun for a White House intern to write personal notes to bloggers asking things like "what exactly did you mean by ____ and can you elaborate?"

There's a joke President Reagan told about the way collectivist politicians treat rich people: A traveling salesman stays overnight with a farm family. When the family gathers to eat there's a pig seated at the table. And the pig has three medals hanging around his neck and a peg leg. The salesman says, "Um, I see you have a pig having dinner with you."

"Yes," says the farmer. "That's because he's a very special pig. You see those medals around his neck? Well, the first medal is from when our youngest son fell in the pond, and he was drowning, and that pig swam out and saved his life. The second medal, that's from when the barn caught fire and our little daughter was trapped in there and the pig ran inside, carried her out and saved her life. And the third medal, that's from when our oldest boy was cornered in the stock yard by a mean bull, and that pig ran under the fence and bit the bull on the tail and saved the boy's life."

"Yes," says the salesman, "I can see why you let that pig sit right at the table and have dinner with you. And I can see why you awarded him the medals. But how did he get the peg leg?"

"Well," says, the farmer, "a pig like that--you don't eat him all at once."

Well, now, I did not say that the authorities here will not overstep. They do, and frequently. The problem is that very few Americans are aware of their rights. For example, with mommy dearest, I had dcf show up at my home several times, demanding entrance.
Problem for them was that I was VERY aware of my rights and told them to leave. As agents of the state, they need a warrant to get into your home without your permission or exigent circumstances. They ignore that entirely. When I asked them to leave, they informed me they would come back with a police officer to get them into the house. I invited them to do just that.
They did. When the officer knocked on the door, I opened it with a small tape recorder in my hand, and politely asked the officer if they had a warrant, to which he replied they did not.
I then asked the officer to take the social workers off of my property. He did so. I also handed him a copy of a federal case in which a a police officer and a social worker lost their immunity for using such tactics to terrify a citizen into letting the officer and SW into the house against their will, without a warrant. Both were stripped of immunity, and sued privately, in their professional capacity for violating the couple's constitutional rights. Both lost their jobs, homes, and everything else in the civil suit that followed. YOU MUST KNOW YOUR RIGHTS< FOLKS... yes, I am yelling that, it is so very important.

Vin anglais?

Anyone familiar with the unfortunately too short Brit-com named "Chef"?

They are running it on Georgia Public Broadcasting - Saturday nights. A favorite of ours.

"Boil in Bag" and "unpasturized stilton" are two of my favorite scenes along with the "plaster in the pastries".

So, this photo is making the rounds today. It shows President-elect Obama looking into a mirror before coming out onto the Capitol steps to take the oath of office during his inauguration just over a year ago.

Just reading through the comments and how many are fawning over it and I just think to myself, it's an interesting and poignant moment in history to capture, a moment of introspection, and again goes to his image control (an ongoing theme). It certainly provides plenty of fodder for lampooning too.

Also, I don't think the photo is as nearly well done as it could have been - plenty of vignetting that I think is distracting.

It is interesting to figure out why the WH chooses to release these images and when they do so.

In 1735, in an important decision, an American jury decided that Peter Zenger, a newspaper publisher, was not guilty of libel, because it was only libel if it was untrue.

This was a very important occurrence in American law, establishing that you could print anything, as long as it was true.

They are so out of control, it is not funny. One of the biggest problems is that the police get their info from DCF on what they are allowed to do. I have educated many a police officer as to the fact. It has been admitted to me that they do not have the time to be familiar with every law.. understandable.. so they rely on DCF to tell them what the rules are. DCF gets away with this crap because the proceedings are closed, to "Protect the child". This leads to enormous abuses in the system. There are several officers here who now know thee truth. For instance, the police here thought they could take a child to the station, and let DCF question them without parental permission. Not so. That is a violation of both state and federal law. The schools will frequently do the same. This is all because of misinformation given to schools and police by DCF. It happens all over the country every day.

Sounds like the good vicar is learning a lesson from Muslims... don't bother with polite discourse, just threaten your critics into silence.

Of course, he has a bit more to learn. Perhaps if the Church of England sanctioned a few beheadings of its more vocal critics, they wouldn't have to bother with the threats at all.

The big lesson to take away is that cinder block construction without rebar is fatal in a strong quake. Concrete with rebar will survive strong quakes, particularly if the structures are engineered for seismic loads. Most in Haiti aren't; hence the overwhelming damage.

To rebuild to modern seismic codes could be expensive, but it's absolutely critical to Haiti's long term well-being since stronger buildings will also provide better protection from hurricanes and tropical storms that have taken thousands of lives over the years in Haiti.

Excellent, and perhaps they could look at the buildings that did not collapse, and see what could be done differently this time. Without foreign aid, though, better buildings will not be built.

Hi EmmmieG! Unfortunately, without a significant change in the way the government of Haiti operates, foreign aid would be throwing good money after bad. (Speaking of foreign aid here - not humanitarian relief.)

I'd prefer a government in Haiti that turned to the private sector and asked, "Okay, what guarantees do we have to make, what changes in how we do things, and what kind of business climate do we have to implement to ensure that you are willing to invest in our country?"

The current situation with governance in Haiti doesn't find it necessary to rebuild to any but the skimpiest of standards, as they want the majority of the foreign aid money to go into their pockets. Private industry, on the other hand, has an economic incentive to build structures that won't be blown away or ground into dust.

Yes.

Any concrete structures would have to be properly designed by a structural engineer. As we saw with Loma Prieta and the Cypress Viaduct collapse even steel reinforced concrete structures will fail if not designed properly.

I saw this article on the front page about Blue Dog Dem Berry (not to be confused with that Marion Barry, crack fan and arrested but not convicted girlfriend stalker):

As expected, Rep. Marion Berry (D-Ark.) announced Monday morning that he will leave Congress at the end of his term. That makes six House Democrats from competitive districts announcing retirment plans in the past two months.

And I looked around and found this in connection with it:

Rep. Marion Berry's parting shot, published in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette [no link, subscription only] offers a warning to moderate Democrats and border state moderates — warning of a midterm bloodbath comparable to the 54-seat D-to-R swing in 1994.

But the jaw-dropper is Berry's claim that President Obama personally dismissed any comparison between Democrats now and under Bill Clinton 16 years ago — by saying his personal popularity would bail everybody out.

The retiring Berry, who doesn't say when the remarks were made, now scoffs at Obama's 50-or-below approval rating:

Writes ADG reporter Jane Fullerton:

Berry recounted meetings with White House officials, reminiscent of some during the Clinton days, where he and others urged them not to force Blue Dogs “off into that swamp” of supporting bills that would be unpopular with voters back home.

“I’ve been doing that with this White House, and they just don’t seem to give it any credibility at all,” Berry said. “They just kept telling us how good it was going to be. The president himself, when that was brought up in one group, said, ‘Well, the big difference here and in ’94 was you’ve got me.’ We’re going to see how much difference that makes now.” [snip]

“I began to preach last January that we had already seen this movie and we didn’t want to see it again because we know how it comes out,” said Arkansas’ 1st District congressman, who worked in the Clinton administration before being elected to the House in 1996... "I just began to have flashbacks to 1993 and ’94. No one that was here in ’94, or at the day after the election felt like. It certainly wasn’t a good feeling.”

Although this may be true, I wonder if it is.

re: #325 CapeCoddah A mom just spent the weekend in jail because her son reported to a teacher that she forced him to kill his pet hampster with a hammer due to a bad report card. It turns out that his report may be suspect and he has had behavioral isssues in the past.

I also have a friend who in a moment of anger slapped his 16 y/o son accross the face (open handed) and ended up reported to the state through the school, put on probation and unable to discipline the son (who was a terror - badmouthed his mother in public and routinely punched holes in the walls around the home). The kid ended up ruling the roost until they could get him to move out at the age of 19 and his brothers and sisters were intimidated by him. Meanwhile the Dad spent most of his time with his tail between his legs afraid to discipline any of the children.

Contrast this with my wife who had molestation, real bruises and a broken jaw from her stepdad and was told she'd have to prove it to her school counselor by stripping naked in front of him (1980's).

I do not have a high opinion of school counsellors and other pseudo legal authorities.

Years ago, I saw a display on the beginnings of the welfare missionary system for the LDS church. They had a copy of the "model home" designed for poor central Americans. One of the chief factors was the need to make the one-room house out of materials that wouldn't kill you if they landed on you. (Although mudslides were still a danger; even in the US a mudslide will kill you.)

This won't work for Haiti, because they don't have the land to make one-story houses in Port au Prince. I've just been reminded of the display this last two weeks.

I got involved with starting a group called Justice for Families. You would not (or maybe you would) believe the stories we saw. Granted, a lot of folks came to us who needed to have the kids removed, and we did not deal with them. BUT, the number of folks literally railroaded by DCF is mind boggling. Justice for Families does not exist anymore, in case anyone looks for it, but someone did hijack the name when we were done with it.
This is a nasty issue, and still needs attention, but with the closed system it is impossible to shine light into the madness.

There's a long gulf of time between now and November. Given the warning shot sounded by Brown across their bow, the Democrats have the opportunity to put that time to good use and turn their fortunes around, should they choose to do so.

Still, midterms favor the party out of power. And the Dems seem splintered, so it's unclear whether they can mount a coordinated salvage operation. Not to mention the staggering level of national debt and continued sluggishness in the economy.

I noticed a lot of concrete slab construction. Not sure if it is cast in place or tilt-up, but very little re-bar. Re-bar is cheap. Build to last and you only build it once. Even cheap construction is expensive when done twice, to say nothing of the wounded, the dead, etc.

I suspect they will double down on the progressive big government solutions and that will backfire. The Tea Party movement didn't gain traction because people want to see gun totin' militia on the statehouse steps. It caught wind in its sails because people fear encroaching government and more taxes- especially when they are already tightening belts.

There's actually potential to use this as modular housing and the US has a surplus of empty shipping containers so the raw materials are available.

Yeah, it's all the nasty bits. Not something I'm particularly interested in.

But in fairness, the habit of tossing that stuff away and only eating the muscle - and only certain muscles, at that - is pretty recent. Even as a kid, there were butcher stores all over the place where I grew up, and they all had hearts, livers, kidneys, tongues, brains and every other part of all the animals they dealt with not just available, but on display. In the past, raising livestock was a large investment of resources, and nothing went to waste. the ability for the average person to be able to purchase beef sirloin, or even tenderloin, on a regular basis is very new.

There's something of a resurgence of interest in those less common bits and pieces among top chefs worldwide. I suppose if this continues one of their greatest features - their cheap price - will vanish as they become trendy.

I'm not proselytizing here - I wouldn't go out of my way for any of it, except - maybe - liver, which is OK except for being a filter organ that gets loaded up with all the weirdness we feed and inject food animals with these days. But if offered, I'd try it, maybe even learn to like it.

Liver's not bad. I used to eat it a lot, back when I was newly independent - and dirt poor. It was cheap, and I like the taste. I usually wound up sauteeing it with other odds and ends - diced peppers, potatoes, mushrooms and whatever else was on sale.

Huh, kind of interesting, I remember a not so well loved radio talk show host being banned in Britain. He said that being banned was a step toward stifling free speech in Britain.

Not many people around here would defend him in his struggle, because he was not well liked and now we have this case of further suppression of free speech on someone else, so why should we care now, just cause this is a "good guy"?

Free speech must be preserved and fought for even if you don't like the guy who is speaking, otherwise it is just hypo-crazy.
