Sticky, smelly Bag Balm: Problem-salving for all

Interesting. Never heard of the stuff. This paragraph stood out:

Sold off pet care shelves and at farm stores for $8.99 per 10-oz. green tub (with cow's head on the lid), it's made of petrolatum, lanolin and an antiseptic, 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate — substantially the same formula used since John L. Norris bought it from a Wells River druggist before the turn of the century.

Must have bought it during the big Y2K chaffing scare of Nineteen and Ninety-Nine.

re: #4 wee fury

What do you use it for? In the article, it stated that one customer uses it on shell casings when doing reloads. Also, that it was used on rifles during WWII to prevent corrosion.

6 wee fury  Sun, Jan 31, 2010 6:18:14pm

Chapped hands and feet. In the winter, my fingertips crack from the cold weather (painful). It helps to heal and relieve the pain. Works wonders.

re: #45 Decatur Deb

Bacon fat is the balm's secret ingredient.

Bacon is life.

A trip to the doctor is all good news these days for 4-year-old Max Irvine.

Just a year ago, however, Max was enduring more than 100 seizures a day. Even a barrage of tests at the famed Mayo Clinic's Epilepsy Laboratory revealed no clear medical explanation.

Epilepsy was consuming every waking hour of Max's life.

"It got to the point where he couldn't walk or talk or function, or even eat hardly," said Max's father Troy Irvine.

Medications control epilepsy for 75 percent of children, but not for Max. His family watched helplessly as the light disappeared from his eyes. Max's playful nature vanished. Priceless intellectual developmental time was being lost.

Finally, Mayo Clinic Pediatric Neurologist Elaine Wirrell, an epilepsy specialist, proposed trading all of Max's meds for a radical change in diet. The Ketogenic Diet is very low in carbohydrates and super high in fats. Max's initial diet meal plan contained 80 percent fat.

"I just remember having tears and thinking how can I be giving my child so much fat," said Max's mother, Kristine Irvine. "The majority of his meal was bacon and butter, or oil and maybe one strawberry. It was very hard to adjust to that."

Butter as an entree. Bacon as a main course. Flavored Canola oil as a beverage. Dr. Wirrell said the strict diet is worth a try for nearly any child who does not respond to medication.

"Over half of them have a meaningful reduction of seizures and nearly a third of them become seizure free on the diet," she said.

SNL has had 2 funny shows in the last year and each time John Hamm was the host. The Halloween one was probably the best show in the last 10 years.

There was at least one other one this season that was almost as bearable as this one. Can't remember who hosted though.

That Closet Organizer sketch was worthy of Mr. Show.

I'm voting for out of context.

I couldn't get her site to load, so I only saw bits and pieces.

She has a reader, apparently, who sent her this handout his kid got at school.

The first thing I saw (on a blog that linked to Pammie's place), was that this was a school assignment.

Reading the handout - it doesn't look to me like an assignment. Perhaps the stuff was given out to this class as simply an informational type thing - I have questions about whether or not that in itself is appropriate, but bottom line - it appears to be limited to this one school and to this one class, and it looks like an informational sheet for youngsters who might want to apply for some sort of internship.

What it most certainly is NOT is what Pammie seems to be claiming it is, which is a concerted effort by the Obama administration to recruit schoolkids into this program. I suspect President Obama had no clue whatsoever that this material was being handed out in this class in this school, fer cryin' out loud.

One of the most beautiful sights I ever saw was shortly after college, when I was driving cross-country in my mom's cast off piece'a junk Ford Fairmont. I arrived at the outskirts of Denver from the east, near sunset. The city gleaming in the golden rays, with the Rockies in the background was gorgeous. What's more, there were *two* rainbows overhead. I pulled onto the shoulder of the interstate so I could get out and soak it in for awhile.

He's not taking the "usual" stem cell approach. They take cells from the organ that needs to be replaced and create more by adding them to a nutrient soup. Then they build a scaffold of the organ, coat it with the cells, and grow a new organ. (Of course, it's a lot harder than that. You need MD or PHD after your name to make this work.)

This is the only way to unclog drains and feel good about it. If you do it as maintenance, they'll keep draining smoothly. All those chemicals are so harsh!

Quite true. And even if you don't give a shit about toxicity or environmental issues, it is still much less harsh on your house's plumbing than those "over the counter" chemicals commonly used.

Thailand: Seized N.Korea arms were bound for Iran

A shipment of weapons from North Korea seized by Thai authorities last month were headed for Iran, according to a confidential report the Thai government sent to a U.N. Security Council committee.

Thai authorities seized more than 35 tons of arms from a cargo plane they said had come from North Korea, and arrested its five crew members after the aircraft made an emergency landing at a Bangkok airport in December. [ID:nSGE5BF0C4]

The report to the Security Council's North Korea sanctions committee, seen by Reuters on Saturday, said the shipment included rockets, fuses, rocket launchers and rocket-propelled grenades.

The cargo plane departed from Pyongyang and was en route to Mehrabad airport in Tehran, the report said. The shipping firm was listed as Korea Mechanical Industry Co.

The movement of North Korean arms to Iran appears to have been an effort to violate U.N. sanctions against North Korea that was foiled by the Thai government, diplomats said. Although Iran is subject to separate U.N. sanctions because of its nuclear program, it is not forbidden to import arms.

Council diplomats said on condition of anonymity that the sanctions committee was expected to discuss the Thai report next month when it considers its latest quarterly report, due on Feb. 11.

Baking soda and vinegar and water are also chemicals. :)

Also quite true, but they do not do the damage to your pipes that other chemicals do.

Often times, to unclog a drain I would use a hose with a spray nozzle and a wet rag to clear a drain with water pressure. Once, I blew out the bottom side of a "P" trap that had seen one too many uses of liquid plumber.

Here we go again... can't stop blaming the Bush administration. How long is this going to go on before the left takes responsibility for this country. I've rewritten a paragraph from a Reuter's article...

But Republicans point out that most of the fiscal mess has been caused by the administration of Democrat President Obama, who cut taxes and created expensive health care reform while pursuing a war in Afghanistan.

If that was written by the GOP, there would be outrage from the left... here is the actual text.

But Democrats point out that most of the fiscal mess has been inherited from the previous administration of Republican George W. Bush, who cut taxes and created an expensive prescription drug-benefit while pursuing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Point is, hope and change doesn't seem like any change that I hoped for.

There was a big march in LA. There are definitely places on the net to follow the Iran protesters, and to keep up on what's happening there. That's all we can do right now, is watch, but by doing that we are building a support for them, then if and when our govt. reacts, we will be behind them.

I say this out of love, but fuck you Steve. I don't watch MTV, and my post was not about gossip or worship, just pointing out the facts: she's famous, she's pretty, she's talented. People will talk about her. A concept so simple a brain damaged caveman could understand it.

Thanks for the insult though, bro. I hope you feel I've returned it in kind.

385 prairiefire  Sun, Jan 31, 2010 8:25:00pm

All we had when I was young was Stevie Nick's Rhiannon. I wanted to be Goth, but didn't know it.
The Cure showed up after I was out of college, so too late for me.
I did get down with the jean mini skirt and ruffled shirt to Flock Of Seagulls.
Way before that, I was a levi jeans and Indian embroidered shirt wearing soulful hippie.
My two cents regarding MTV culture.

I know that. I just don't feel comfortable speaking to women like that. I have more respect for them than stooping to that level.

I can dig it. I try to do the same when speaking with women in the real world. Some women do find that condescending, though. They want to be treated as equal to men. They give no quarter in arguments/debates, and expect none in return.

My point: Women are not fragile little creatures made of thin crystal. Many of them are likely tougher than you and I put together.

Indeed. Women put up with a lot of crap in our society; even more so in less-than-enlightened societies. And then there's the women who deal with pregnancy and childbirth. They've got my respect and then some.

rent a car...pay later...problem solved

No credit, no bank account. Without divulging too many details, I am about one kindness away from digging cans outta the garbage.

On another note, I used to have a Camaro. An IROC, salvage title. In better times, I spent a lot of time, money, and knuckle meat making her purr. When less than better times hit...

A certain part crapped out at the same time my insurance payment was due. Since the car wouldn't be drivable without that part, I decided to buy the part first and worry about the insurance later. A mistake I won't make again.

I spent the better part of a day putting that part in. It was stolen and stripped two days later. If I had bought the insurance instead of the part, the thieves would have been driving a death trap, and I would have gotten a bit of the money back from it.

544 Varek Raith  Sun, Jan 31, 2010 10:18:24pm

Force Wave.

One of the most powerful forms of Force Push. It was essentially a wave of pure Force-energy that pulsed out from the Force user that utilized it, which knocked back anything within the power's blast radius.

The strength of Force Wave was extremely potent, and its raw power was on more than one occasion described as a telekinetic explosion. It was more widespread, like a wave, hence the name, and could push multiple opponents at once. It was very useful in tight, cramped quarters when the Force user needed room to move, since Force users could damage their opponents by pushing them into the walls. It could also be used as "crowd control," when overwhelming numbers of enemies immediately swarm toward the user

Hey Jimmah. The Night of the Hunter is on Hulu. Just watched it. Quite a dramatic thriller. The night scenes were excellent when the two kids escaped and headed down the river.

One of the perks for working for me is that you get to name your own titles (and have your underlings refer to you as such!)
:)

First job I had out of grad school paid 20,000 annually, but they let you pick your own job title. I was the 'Regional Program Coordinator', IIRC, and I had business cards printed up that said that.

I remember - that was a really dramatic and moving sequence. Real gem of a movie. Definitely been too long since I last watched it.

I liked how it dealt with a lot of modern day issues. Lillian Gish was great and liked how she defended the children with that shotgun. That pose when she was pointing it at Robert Mitchum -- looked like it came so naturally to her. She was a great actress. Almost lived to be 100.

Force Wave.

There's a blog out there by an American man who spent some time in Japan teaching middle school English. He details, in one section, his Gaijin Powers. These include Gaijin Perimeter (no one will get too close to him), Gaijin Smash, Gaijin Telepathy, and so on. His Japanese friends insist he also has a power which allows him to sleep with any Japanese woman he wants, but he has trouble activating this one.

I just watched an old, old movie with my Dad. The Torrent starring Greta Garbo and Jacob Krantz. Everybody knows Garbo, Krantz (his movie name was Ricardo Cortez but he was an Austrian Jew, not even Sephardi) was a great leading man, but when talkies came his thick NY accent could only get him gangster roles. Eventually he quit Hollywood and went to work on Wall Street.

Look out. Pamela Geller has a world-wide "exclusive" tonight, on Obama's shocking Nazi-like indoctrination of our helpless schoolchildren!

It's an outrageous outrage to top all previous outrageous outrages.

I note she also has a long write-up on Hajj Amin, a shocking photo of Obama bowing to the mayor of Tampa (?) and also Bat Ye'or warning that Muslims are bringing anti-Semitism to Europe, an area never before known to have any anti-Semitism. (OK, I may exaggerate her position slightly for comic effect.)

Oh dear. Was it as awful as that school broadcast where it was suggested that everybody work hard and do their best?

Well, we didn't have the kids watch that at my school, so they were spared. A few of them work hard and do their best anyway, but I suspect their parents may have let them watch it on YouTube or something.

Great photo at Dr. Macro's site. If you've never visited the site and love to see old stills from days gone by I highly suggest it.

A whole bunch of scattershot crazy. She seriously needs to take a month off from politics and seek treatment for whatever's wrong with her.

I never watched a Garbo movie before. This was her first film in the US, a silent. The only other silent movie I have ever watched is Fritz Lang's Metropolis, fascinating for its sci-fi special effects.

I am wondering what possessed Obama to bow to the mayor of Tampa, but given that she's not really looking at him in the photo, he could be bending over to pick up a suitcase. No clue.

Great story, great acting, great cinematography. Would be great if I could get ice-ski to find some classic movie theater in NYC that's showing it when I get over there. Other than that, there's always hulu - thanks for the tip :)

Maybe Netflix for rentals. Hulu has a bunch of great one mixed in with the rest of the bunch. Typically it seems as though they rotate the movies and they're not up after several months.

Yeah, sometimes those preferences change. I know mine have.

I think a Yankel Krantz page at your site would be a nice addition.

Bad Dinner Alert:
Some had convincingly argued that for the sake of finally achieving a timely end to the trial process for Gitmo terrorists, it was now too late to advocate a reversal of the KSM trial arrangements.
What then is to be made of the recent news that the KSM showtrial is now indeed likely to be moved out of NYC, and that no new venue has yet been chosen?
Will this breathe new life into the debate over military vs civilian trials?
Or maybe instead Obama will just skip the trial of KSM completely and move directly to his pre-ordained execution.

I got a ton a work to do at my site yet, including 1850-1869 of The Occident. When I get that done I can plan a Jewish Hollywood site.

That's a fantastic idea. I can buy a 42" HDTV for research purposes and charge it to the foundation. Heh.
