Who’s Crazier: Palin or Bachmann?
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has posted a fun new quiz: Who’s nuttier: Michele Bachmann or Sarah Palin?
I got a perfect score, which I’m not sure is anything to brag about.

That's clever on a number of levels;
Including the way they're getting the message out, the message they're presenting, and the way they're collecting a ton of email addresses.

They are on a roll lately. The Republicans are making it easy for them but they're being pretty politically clever these days. If anything I think they're being too timid.

[harp arpeggios play, as we dissolve to:]
Sarah would be completely unable to stop talking for 15 seconds.
Michele would suddenly start crying with deep, wracking sobs out of the clear blue. She would refuse to explain why, saying "it's nothing," and then when you're obviously freaked out and continuing is the farthest thing from your mind, she'll insist that your sudden loss of interest indicates that you think she's deeply repulsive. Then she will be angry, and of course it will be all your fault.

Just a drive by before LOST.
Holy moly... so last Sunday I worked my first 4 hours at the store, had one of the best cashiers in the place training me.
Today I walk in from my shift... they put me on a register WITHOUT anyone to hold my hand... I'm thinking, this is going to be flying by the seat of my pants.
"Hi... did you find everything you need? Do you need any stamps... ice... wood pellets, it's going to get cold tonight."
"Hi... did you find everything you need? Did you find everything you didn't need. Can I get you some stamps, ice... small furry critters."
"Hi... did you find everything you need? Did you find everything you didn't need. Can I get you some stamps, ice... we have a special on road kill."
"Hi... did you find everything you need? Did you find everything you didn't need. Can I get you some stamps, ice... would you like to adopt a child."
Seriously... I said these things... they instructed me to "engage" the customers (or was that to get "engaged" to the customers)... so, I'm going to be the worlds first "stand up cashier."
"Do you want paper or plastic... or shall I just toss the stuff in the general direction of your vehicle?" (no, I didn't use that line).
Fun.

Rep. Hank Johnson is gravely ill with hepatitis C. But don't let that stop you from mocking him.
He's not gravely ill. He meant that he was concerned the infrastructure couldn't handle the additional 8,000 marines. On one hand, we conservatives should address the meat of the remark or let it be, IMHO.
On the other hand, "gravely ill" with HepC = end-stage cirrhosis or some other form of grave liver disease. No one with end-stage cirrhosis is up and walking around Capital Hill. It's a horrible way to die.

re: #65 Walter L. Newton
Fun.
Do you have your routine all written and practiced up?

He's not gravely ill.
Yes, he most certainly is. U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson battling hepatitis C.
WASHINGTON -- For months, speculation has swirled in both Atlanta and Washington about U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson's health.
The Lithonia Democrat's already-thin frame has shed 30 pounds in the past year. His speech is slower than ever, and he regularly gets lost in thought in the middle of a discussion. He is easily fatigued and often impatient and irritable.
Monday, he revealed why.
In an exclusive interview with the AJC, Johnson disclosed he has been battling hepatitis C, an incurable, blood-borne liver disease, for more than a decade.
He was officially declared free of the virus in January, but it has ravaged his liver, resulted in thyroid problems and other health issues, including depression, for which he's also being treated. To keep the disease in remission, Johnson is going through an experimental treatment that he said has been the worst part so far.
"I am weaker than I ever have been," Johnson, 55, said in his Capitol Hill office.

My vote goes to Rep. Hank Johnson who thinks that stationing 8000 marines on Guam will make it tip over and capsize.
Amazingly, volcanic islands often "capsize" from erosion and landslides on the shield volcano opposite side.
I doubt Mr. Johnson had the geologic process in mind though.

re: #65 Walter L. Newton
Man...
I worked big-box retail in my late teens through mid 20s, and the most valuable lesson I learned from it was DON'T BE AN ASS TO THE REDSHIRTS.
I was never a "people person" to begin with, but dealing with retail customers for an extended period of time can really sour you on people in general.
If any of you are ever annoyed at the treatment you're getting from a retail employee, just keep in mind that it's not terribly unlikely that the last seemingly friendly and engaging person they talked to went to the manager and falsely claimed you offered them a discount on something.
Also keep in mind that when that employee does their duty and upholds company policy with regard to returns & exchanges, if you respond by threatening to call the BBB / AG / FOX4 / etc., when you aren't allowed to return the laptop you bought 3 months ago and which is now covered in orange Cheeto dust: It isn't going to make anyone want to help you.
Anyway, I think if I ever ended up in a situation where keeping a job was unimportant, I would go and get a job at a big-box retailer just so I could dissuade people from this crazy idea that the customer is always right.
My current job gets tedious and mind-numbing at times, and I REALLY hate that. However, it's still better than having to interact with the general public.

The presence of HCV in the liver triggers the human immune system, which leads to inflammation. Over time (usually decades), prolonged inflammation may cause scarring. Extensive scarring in the liver is called cirrhosis. When the liver becomes cirrhotic, the liver fails to perform its normal functions, (liver failure), and this leads to serious complications and even death. Cirrhotic livers also are more prone to become cancerous.

German women accused of real-life 'Weekend at Bernie's' stunt
Two German women arrested in Britain after allegedly trying to smuggle a dead relative onto a flight to Berlin said Tuesday they thought the man was simply asleep.
Kurt Willi Jarant, 91, was in a wheelchair and wearing sunglasses as his widow and her daughter attempted to check him in at Liverpool John Lennon Airport, northwest England, on Saturday.
Airport staff helped the elderly man, who suffered from Alzheimer's, out of a taxi into the wheelchair when he arrived for his flight.
But officials became suspicious and took his pulse, discovering he had passed away.
Police then detained his widow Gitta Jarant, and her daughter, Anke Anusic, at the airport on suspicion of having failed to give notification of death. They have been released on bail.

Gee, you think maybe they are starting to lay the groundwork to yank him from office and replace him with another more amenable puppet or something? (naw, our government never ever does that kind of thing, well, except when they do)

There are lots of ways to contract Hep.
any way that involves blood as far as I know...I have it, and was a nurse at one time, lost a friend to it and my ER wife was very up to speed with it...it's been a national plague over the last 20 years

I have a dear friend, who couldn't loose his belly fat. No matter what he did, his tummy was bloated. Short version, he was diagnosed with Hep C, and has had a liver transplant, from his Uncle. 5 years on, he is doing well, but his skin color isn't quite right, in the last 6 months & I am worried about him.
No chance it was drug use, his doctors think he picked it up in foreign lands.
He's going to Madagascar this Fall, anyway. Malaria is a big risk for him, but he really wants to go.

I'm up for it.
I should have known that trouble was brewing when a phone call from the Census folks came in 4 weeks ago on a Sunday at 10:30am! Apparently they were so short staffed in administration, that even when I rejected the first job posting (I was to be a Senior Citizen assistant in helping our nursing bound elders fill out forms for $14.50/h), they informed me that they would call again the following day with another, higher paying, job. So the following Sunday at 9:15am they call again offering $18.75 to do "non-traditional" enumeration. I accepted in my half-asleep state, not knowing what I was about to get into....
....which was counting homeless people in New York City! (The training manual which the Census forgot to take back from me, advises to "Wear comfortable shoes, should the need to run [from angry and violent homeless people] arise.") And that was before the disaster that was "training" began....

re: #183 albusteve
probably where 90% of hep C originates...altho I am probably wrong...almost everybody I know from 35yrs ago has it including me
Needles. Blood transfusions.
Here's the skinny:
Transmission
Hepatitis C infection in the US by source. (CDC,n.d.[dead link])
Sexual activities and practices were initially identified as potential sources of exposure to the hepatitis C virus. More recent studies question this route of transmission. Currently it is felt to be a means of rare transmission of hepatitis C infection. These are simply the current known modes of transmission and due to the nature of hepatitis there may be more ways that it is transmitted than the current known methods.
[edit]Injection drug use
Those who currently use or have used drug injection as their delivery route for drugs are at increased risk for getting hepatitis C because they may be sharing needles or other drug paraphernalia (includes cookers, cotton, spoons, water, etc.), which may be contaminated with HCV-infected blood. An estimated 60% to 80% of intravenous recreational drug users in the United States have been infected with HCV.[15] Harm reduction strategies are encouraged in many countries to reduce the spread of hepatitis C, through education, provision of clean needles and syringes, and safer injecting techniques. For reasons that are not clear transmission by this route currently appears to be declining in the USA.
The VA Testimony before the Subcommittee on Benefits Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, U.S. House of Representatives, April 13, 2000, Gary A. Roselle, M. D., Program Director for Infectious Diseases, Veterans Health Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, state, "One in 10 US Veterans are infected with HCV", a rate 5 times greater than the 1.8% infection rate of the general population."
A study conducted in 1999, by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), and involving 26,000 veterans shows that up to 10% of all veterans in the VHA system tested positive for hepatitis C.
Of the total number of persons who were hepatitis C antibody positive, and reported an era of service, 62.7% were noted to be from the Vietnam. The second most frequent group is listed as post-Vietnam at 18.2%, followed by 4.8% Korean conflict, 4.3% post-Korean conflict, 4.2% from WWII, and 2.7% Persian Gulf era veterans.
[edit]Blood products
Blood transfusion, blood products, or organ transplantation prior to implementation of HCV screening (in the U.S., this would refer to procedures prior to 1992) is a decreasing risk factor for hepatitis C.
A cDNA clone from the hepatitis C virus genome was first isolated in 1989[16] and reliable tests to screen for the virus were not available until 1992. Therefore, those who received blood or blood products prior to the implementation of screening the blood supply for HCV may have been exposed to the virus. Blood products include clotting factors (taken by hemophiliacs), immunoglobulin, Rhogam, platelets, and plasma. In 2001, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the risk of HCV infection from a unit of transfused blood in the United States is less than one per million transfused units.
[edit]Iatrogenic medical or dental exposure
People can be exposed to HCV via inadequately or improperly sterilized medical or dental equipment. Equipment that may harbor contaminated blood if improperly sterilized includes needles or syringes, hemodialysis equipment, oral hygiene instruments, and jet air guns, etc. Scrupulous use of appropriate sterilization techniques and proper disposal of used equipment can reduce the risk of iatrogenic exposure to HCV to virtually zero.

Instead of the customary 4 days of training (all on the government's dime) when one learns to be a "traditional" enumerator, only 2 days are doled out for the tougher job of counting our least fortunate citizens. This is even more chanlenging when your trainer has had only 2 days of management training herself! She was competent overall, but clearly overwhelmed by the conflicting and incomplete instructions that she had been given. The first day of training included 2 hours waiting for further instructions from her superiors, and 4 hours of paperwork to fill out in between the remaining 2 hours of instructions. Which left no time for the finger printing, that was required to be completed that day! So, after a promised "5-minute walk" to the main office (that was actually 20 minutes away), us aspiring body-counters had to wait for up to 3 hours to be fingerprinted 2 times each time by a different federal employee! 30 people (mostly mothers with children at day-care) were kicked out at that point (without pay) because they couldn't wait around any longer after being promised they could go home by 5pm. The next day, training was cut short because the feds, in their great wisdom, had rented classroom space from a Jewish institute of learning, and of course they close up shop early on Shabbos! Duh....
Did I mention that everybody in my class felt totally unprepared to do the work? Or that rain was expected for the full 3 days of the "non-traditional" enumeration? Because that's when the real fun began....

You can sort of see why, though. He got her daughter pregnant at the worst possible moment, she had to drag him to the RNC and pretend the kids were getting married, then he proceeded to go totally haywire...
I would hate him too.

Duh...
Did I mention that everybody in my class felt totally unprepared to do the work? Or that rain was expected for the full 3 days of the "non-traditional" enumeration? Because that's when the real fun began...
Imagine 200 census workers with umbrellas in front of a soup kitchen.
If you were homeless, would you want to go inside?
That was the situation on my first day. Of course, only 60 of us were chosen; the rest were either sent to other soup kitchens or were told to go home. Naturally, it took nearly 90 minutes to be instructed to do the latter. Which didn't matter because my supervisor called when I was down the block and asked if I could run down to the main office and pick up clipboards and extra forms and bring them back to the soup kitchen.
The image I would like to leave you all with is of Surabaya Stew carrying his census bag in has left hand, bulging with clipboards that chafe against his leg. In his right, an umbrella. On his left and right shoulders, more bags stuffed with 100's of census forms that a Census hired truck couldn't see fit to include while making deliveries. And bouncing around his neck like a dog tag from the planet dork, his badge and emergency contact card!
I was starting to dislike my life very much at this point.
I'll skip the rest, except to say that the best part of chasing down a mobile food van at 8:15pm making pit stops to feed ghost-like homeless new yorkers is getting a phone call from an job that you interviewed at 4 months ago.
I've been working there since Thursday; the best part of which is: no more Uncle Sam paychecks for me!

When there was a big rain storm on the East Coast Al Gore claimed it was from global warming. There are kooks on both sides of the debate.
Actually they still continue to do that every time a major storm system strikes, but it isn't Al Gore, it is some half informed talking head on T.V. who really has no idea what he is talking about. They just don't get that by blaming normal natural storms that have happened quite regularly for all of recorded history on climate change that they invalidate it completely in some peoples minds and cause doubt even amongst some of the slightly better informed.
We cannot stop them from doing that, we are not in control of what anyone says to the press, unlike the Republican party whose members always quote exactly the same talking points to any press question over and over. They are wrong for trying to sensationalize global warming and claim immediate consequences that often cannot be proven or even linked at all casually to the science. It discounts the actual science and makes those of us who support it look foolish, damn that pesky first amendment and our obligation to allow anyone to say anything they want!

the Stones rule
Around the age of 17 I saw Apocalypse Now. That movie was about 26 years old when I saw it, making it a classic for me. In it, Armed Forces Radio plays a Stone's tune, and the DJ calls it either an oldie or a classic. The next weekend I saw the Stones live. Sold out show. Can't do that with too many bands.

Anyway, I think if I ever ended up in a situation where keeping a job was unimportant, I would go and get a job at a big-box retailer just so I could dissuade people from this crazy idea that the customer is always right.
