US News • Views: 2,375

An Associated Press news alert went out a short time ago, saying that Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has offered Shirley Sherrod her job back. Sherrod is reportedly considering…

UPDATE at 7/21/10 2:01:31 pm:

Vilsack is now giving a press conference, and he looks extremely embarrassed. He just said that the decision was his alone, and that the White House had no part in it. Quote: “I did not think before I acted, and for that reason this poor woman has gone through a very difficult time.”

Better parking place, longer lunch break, new curtains, and Andrew Breitbart's head on a pike in the corner. That might persuade her.

Will bring this point up again: the USDA is a friggin' political minefield, especially in Georgia, shere black farmers brought a class action suit against it in the 90's for systematic discrimination against black farmers.

The case has been settled, but payment has not been fully made to date.

No wonder he is antsier than a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs...

I don't defend his actions, but I begin to see why he chose to err on the side of caution, and I begin to understand what he meant about not wanting to let this case drag down their already dismal civil-rights record.

Vilsack will get the full sack, probably no later than for Obama's second term, or some point after this has all died down, he will move on to another lower-profile political appointment.

People are quick to jump on Vilsack and I don't deny he has culpability, yet I understand his reaction. Just as he should have taken a little more time to review Sherrod, his handlers should take a little more time to review his actions. It is a very politically charged time right now and all of them are caught up in it.

I also fully plan to cast my vote in November for whoever is running in my state, the reason I don't know there name is because politics tend to be fairly laid back here in Maryland, simply because we're not "in play"

So I fail to see how I could rightfully call myself an independant when I plan to vote democratic and agree with the party about 80% of the time....

Why did Sherron claim that the request came from the White House? Just curious about how they put the pressure on her.

But that is a secondary thing. What needs to come out is her message on overcoming racism and the role that Breitbart played in sliming her.

And every time whe gives her inspiring message on how we need to overcome the sort of racism that can paralyze politics in this country, she has to remind us, at least indierectly, of how we came to know her name and her story.

You gotta nip it in the bud, Andy...

He needs to take ownership of this turd, it was very poor leadership on his part. It sure is going to make everyone working in his agency wonder how mercenary he would be towards them if anything questionable came up. The right thing to do would have been to suspend her temporarily while he investigated the allegations. That would have given him room to check it out, get the whole story, reason, let some of the news cycle fade, and then act. Good leaders almost always delay momentous decisions. The only ones you shouldn't delay for real thought and consideration are ones where lives might immediately be on the line.

"I trusted you to know your people. Thank you for not telling me more about her before everyone in my administration jumped the gun. Now we all look like idiots.

Now get out there and grovel."

What this does not look like though is that the President or his advisors or the Dems are using this golden oppurtunity to give Fox a richly deserved black eye and shine a real spotlight on who the real race baiting swine are.

So far, as with most things Obama, I am giving him a B-. His heart is in the right place. He is intelligent. He can not be expected to foresee every possible fire from every possible agency of a governmental system and entrenched bureaucracy that he did not set up.

However, he lacks spine. He lacks courage. He lacks the understanding that the gloves came off about two years ago. His biggest weakness has always been a certain cowardice in the face of confrontation and the misguided belief that people, if spoken to like adults, will reject the truth in all cases. His second biggest weakness is believing that scumbags can be reasoned with.

re: #87 LudwigVanQuixote

I'll bet it went something like:

"His biggest weakness has always been a certain cowardice in the face of confrontation and the misguided belief that people, if spoken to like adults, will reject the truth in all cases."

That was so weak and sniveling. This was not a matter of both sides acting without the facts or a mistake made by honest players.

I want to vomit.

Say it like it is.

You were fooled by a con job perpetrated by a racist, political hack who was enabled by a race baiting propaganda machine in Fox. You over reacted without getting all the facts and you apologize without any equivocation for the administrations hasty over-reaction to a lie that damaged an innocent and good woman.

Talk about the climate of fear and race baiting that led to this and was generated by Fox and Breitbart.

This was simply weak and petulant. It will make it all go away - and it will cause this to go away. The right will pretend this never happened. They will quickly forget about the egg on their faces and just make a better crafted smear next time.

No one will learn anything and you turned yourselves into a disgraceful bunch of weak, gutless cowards.

About a year ago it became apparent that we are dealing with an ideological battle for the soul of our republic. These things are not won by spineless equivocations and gutless pseudo-morality. The bad guys have had their war faces on from day one. You pussies in the WH still think this is some form of university level debate club.

Oh, so the official version will be that Cook lied to her?

You shouldn't leave Breitbart's bridge undefended like that. Talk to us some more about the Obama DOJ / New Black Panthers, ACORN, and Van Jones.

calls from the WH

buildings shouldn't be allowed to make phone calls

Corporations have free speech so I don't understand why buildings shouldn't be allowed to make phone calls.

As opposed to the true story which is that Rahm Emanuel was on the phone with her, naked, threatening her life if she didn't resign?

//not clear what you think the unofficial story is

I thought she was telling the truth. I guess that POV went out the window when it came time to circle the wagons around the WH, eh?

She never said the white house called her four times, Spare. She said she was told by cook that they had called.

If you can prove otherwise, do so.
